    Does the Umpire matter?

So I try to always listen to the little cutscene about the umpire in the first inning but do they actually call the zone based on it or no? Sometimes it feels like the do but other times its no different than any other ump

    Re: Does the Umpire matter?

Just seem random imo, they all umpire much the same. I dont see any consistency with them umpiring to there traits/personality. The umpire that squeezes the zone left to right is just as likely to call a pitch that is outside the zone a strike as any other umpire.

Had this discussion before but i think they should call the game 100% correct when it comes to there zone tendencies. If they don't umpire to there tendencies 100% then what makes them any different from the umpire who has no consistency or the one that you never know what he is going to call from game to game.

      Re: Does the Umpire matter?

I had a ball right on the corner of the strike zone called a ball the very second the commentary was telling me that the home plate ump was a pitchers' ump. I figured it was random. I love the missed calls though, over a game they seem to balance out for me at least. It's the beauty of sport that most other sports games fail to capture.

Yes they definitely do. Some umps aren't very unique and just kinda call it straight up. Some others...well they a certain kind of special..

I generally don't pay attention to what the commentary says about the umps, but I have had games where the zone was noticeably smaller/larger

            3 umpire settings.

            Variable umpire
            perfect umpire
            "realistic" umpire

In my experience they do. Woody Keller and Clyde Washington are blind as bats (crossed eyed Clyde).

Clyde is the Angel Hernandez of the Show. His zone changes pitch to pitch, batter to batter, and mood to mood.

In the game I'm currently playing Patrick Johnson is the home plate umpire. He gives the low zone. I would say that 8 out of 10 pitches at the bottom of the zone, either on the line or just out of it, are called strikes.

James Kingsley who umped the previous game, likes to give pitchers a few inches inside on hitters, especially lefties.

              What would "realistic" entail?

to some extent yes, but maybe a slider for umps could be added so people who would prefer a more influential impact could get it.

Eff Clyde Washington. I always groan whenever I see him behind the plate.

I've found that umps are pretty consistent, if not game to game then within a single game.

Even if the only consistent thing about them is if they're wildly inconsistent. Effen Clyde.

Yeah I cant' stand cross eyed Clyde. I threw a pitchout and he called it a strike.

                    Just kidding....

Ok I am, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

I never pay attention to which ump is which, but I had one last night calling outside strikes vs right handed batters and I absolutely abused it with deGrom for 12 Ks in 7 innings. I'm just now starting to get locked in on ump tendencies

                        that was me batting.
the only thing remotely close to me resembling a HoF hitter is when I channel my inner Vladimir Guerrero & accidentally swing at pitchouts. which I've done a lot.

I guess I'm weird, I use the perfect umpire setting. Even then there are some borderline pitches that appear to be strikes that are called balls and vice versa. But generally speaking I know if it's going to be called a ball or a strike.
