Re: Your reason for playing Franchise

back in the early 90s when I was getting into sports games I used to get a notepad and pen and write stats down and play my own season (before season stuff was even tracked!) I used to play a lot of games. not just with baseball games but madden etc. I used to track wins losses for each team and play the playoffs.

then sports games started to track all the stats and I didn't have to do all that work. I guess my love for franchise started from there and has always stuck. it's great to come home from work play a few games knowing your in your own little fictional world and franchise mode in another reality.

I just like playing a season and the pennant races, etc., don't really care for the other aspects. Having said that however, I posted this in the 'Did MLB 18 meet your expectations?' thread and I think it applies here as well.

"I really liked 18. While I have always been a season mode player one thing I really appreciated by being forced to play a full 162 game season (in franchise mode) was that the games against division rivals were spread realistically throughout the season.

In the old season mode, even for an 81 game season, all of the intra-divisional games were packed into the beginning of the schedule. If they ever do bring that mode back, I hope that they address that."

Thats true. But if 2K, EA, or someone else was able to jump back in and challenge and push SDS, I have to feel like someone would eventually push the envelope from its been basically stuck for almost ten years. I can be patient. As it is, there isn't a lot of hope for it to ever improve, and as I said before, offline franchise is all that I really care about.

It's tough to sum it up in one post but I just love watching the stats add up in a season. I like to see those random K/9 numbers from my bullpen arms or the BB:K ratio of my hitters. Seeing role players step up and put up better numbers than you'd expect. Watching my closer blow one and then my long relief arm pick up a win in extra innings. I enjoy the randomness of each game. Baseball is just great.

A recent example for me in my Reds franchise....

I lost Scooter Gennett for a couple of weeks after he took a line drive off the noggin'. I thought, "Well crap, what now?". So, I decided to bring up top prospect Nick Senzel (who has 2B as his secondary). Senzel's last minor league game before I called him up, BOOM - torn MCL and out for the season!

So, I have to call-up marginal C potential minor leaguer Brandon Dixon (63-ish overall) for a couple of weeks....and wouldn't you know, the kid has played well. He's hit the ball hard and has had some productive ABs. He's not going to steal Scooter's job, but he's etched himself in my mind as a possible bench option moving forward.

Another example is flamed-out top prospect Robert Stephenson. This guy has been a stalwart in the rotation thus far (while more established guys have been faltering). IRL, he always had the talent, but never put it all together. So far, he has really solidified his place in the rotation and has been the de facto ace of the staff.

It's stories like that which make me happy. It's not the stud players, it's the fringe guys who bubble up (or sometimes the guys that 'crash and burn'). I don't want my franchise to mimic real life, I want it to be a parallel universe.

I really love hearing all of this! Looking to maybe start a Padres, Jays or Reds franchise.

No company is excluded from making a MLB game. If 2K wished to bring it back or EA wanted to bring back MVP, or if Microsoft wanted to finally resurrect the High Heat series, they could. They just choose not to.

RBI Baseball is on the market and in its 3rd season. They have a franchise mode but I haven't played to see how in depth it actually is.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

What I like about your Dixon story is that guys can perform despite what that OVR number looks like. I'm reading alot of posts in various forums for different where users have issues and go right to the ratings numbers wondering why the higher number player doesn't perform as well. I always like to look at a guy's performance and keep him in while hot or maybe stay in the show as the utility guy rather than sending him down.

Not so fond of Robert Stephenson myself; "Treasure Island" was fine but I find "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" a bit far fetched.

I did the same thing with Bases Loaded on NES. We always talked about wanting a more realistic game as kids and that so many people nit pick this game makes me want to go back to those days just to remind us what we have now.

Amen. Put my franchise in yesterday and resumed. Beautiful game that plays really well. I've got a Samsung 4k t.v. and it looks stunning. Every time I walk into Costco and see the OLED t.v.s I get this impulse......

Yeah, I think lots of people who play The Show don't really "get" baseball. You can literally have a stud player go through a month-long stretch of hitting into bad luck...and that can begin to spiral...and spiral.... You can also have a lesser guy who always seems to find the gaps, always seems to guess right on that hanging pitch....he gets hot and it can lead to some surprises. Ratings do not equal results (particularly in smaller sample sizes)...which is very true-to-real-life. Numbers usually regress to the mean at some point - but sometimes you get that guy who is a bit limited who just absolutely shines for whatever reason....and these are the stories I love.

What The Show also does REALLY well is replicate what happens if you start to "press" with a guy. You have to relax and take what the pitcher gives you...sometimes, that means slapping a single the other way. If you are trying too hard, it usually spirals downhill and before you know it, that stud hitter is below the Mendoza Line.
Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.

I don't just play franchise. I play franchise manage mode. I also have restrictive trade rules for myself.

The reason is to be able to run a MLB franchise and compete against the other teams in MLB. I also sim zero games until and unless my team is eliminated from the playoffs. I'm currently in August of 2019 in my mlbts 18 franchise and I've played every inning of every game.

I always play just single seasons (every game) with my created team of family/friends. Just for the enjoyment of playing the game. Have done this forever with all my sports games
