Re: Are we nearing the end of MLB The Show?

I’m a franchise gamer so I do understand some of the frustration towards the mode being too stagnant over the last two years. Before that, they did a pretty good job year to year adding features that would have me excited.

For me it’s the gameplay. In my opinion, it’s the best sports game out there for presentation and gameplay. It’s clear every year they prioritize improving those areas. For that reason, I get excited every year to pre-order. This year is no different despite the lack of franchise mode upgrades. I am counting the days to release.

An example of the exact opposite is NHL 19. They have put together a very good franchise mode. Relocation, Expansion and improved scouting. Which are three of the things I would most love to see added in the Show. I also love the rating and potential system EA uses in NHL. The one deduction is no 30 team control. On the other hand, the gameplay is subpar. Every game feels the same more or less. Very little player differentiation and a weak and glitchy presentation. And because of this, I get bored with it after a few weeks. Even though I’m an avid franchise guy and love to build teams.

It would obviously be nice to have both. An immersive franchise mode and top notch gameplay. But it’s clear to me, the gameplay is what keeps the game fun year to year. And also causes me to play it for a full cycle instead of a few weeks.

I have decided that for now I am sticking to 18, although I do plan on getting 19 at some point. I’m carrying my franchise over so I’m not too concerned about the osfm rosters.

For me it all depends how it plays out of the box and when Armor gets a slider set out. If the game doesnt need patching I will buy it sooner rather than later. Going to hold off for now though.

There’s nothing for me that makes this a must buy on release date as it once did in the past.

I agree and I think that’s why many of the people who are mainly offline franchise players that continue to buy each year continue to do so despite the lack of significant improvements and additions to franchise.

For me The Show is the king of gameplay out of the sports games. The Show has always played great for me the way it is, never felt the need to use sliders with this game. It’s probably the best representation of its sport on the field. I normally check on what 2K is doing each year with their franchise mode and while I think their’s is the best, I’m on and off with buying the game.

Meanwhile with Madden, unless you’re a casual fan or an online MUT player, someone that doesn’t care about playing ‘EA football’, the gameplay can be pretty bad. If you want even close to realism sliders are a requirement, people need to slider test a bunch, then when you lock in a set it’s about patch time again where it gets messed up and back to testing. Often becomes a headache.

Unless improvement to franchise comes to a complete stop, Franchise is removed entirely, gameplay goes downhill, or a competitor comes along that does both, great gameplay and a deep franchise mode, then gameplay and presentation upgrades will probably continue to be enough to keep my buying.

Re: Are we nearing the end of MLB The Show?

The game is fine and isnt going anywhere. They're making more money the past few years than they ever have. There is a reason all the sports games have added the DD card style modes with microtransactions at the core and that's because they make money. It's a similar high like gambling and can cause some people to want to spend money to improve quicker.

MLBTS I would say is the best out of the sports games as you dont need to spend money to compete compared to say a NBA2k. However, this mobile style of gaming has made its way into a lot of console games and isnt going anywhere. Outside of say the EU putting down some sort of law restriction on microtransactions, that the US in turn adopts to some degree, there is no stopping microtransactions. Companies will of course develop modes/methods/etc to get people to want to spend money as it's best for the "bottom line".

There definitely is frustration among the franchise offline only userbase and it should be expected given the last few years. Whatever "blowback" they may receive in sales is easily out surpassed with microtransactions so it doesnt mean much in the short term. Any blowback to their launch sales this year from OS users is probably gonna be due more to the lack of OSFM rosters and not due to the lack of franchise specific improvements.

Anyone thinking the PS5 is gonna change the game for MLBTS I think are mistaken. The best change in my opinion would be a straight up redo from the ground up. The PS5 and PS4 have similar architecture so they wont have to. Why would something like rotating interleague schedules not be implemented by now and why would it take 2 dev cycles to implement? There are underline issues ensuring everything works in cohesion together and sometimes it's best to just start from the ground up instead of building on top of a problematic foundation.

The series isn't going anywhere. Sales are still near a million annually. For me, though, I am skipping for the 2nd year straight. They aren't adding enough to franchise mode for me to warrant a purchase. Maybe the March to October is the first step in a revamped franchise mode. If it is then I may be back for '20, but right now I'm not buying the game unless it is on sale around $25 or less.

I don't know where you got this information because the Show's sales were the highest ever last year and their digital revenue was the highest ever last year.

We seem to have reached a tipping point where even the developers are aware of long time fans' frustration and hopefully that leads to a shift in focus next year. I don't want to have to wait until the first PS5 release to get excited about this game again.

But yeah, like others said the game isn't dying just because the target demographic has seemingly changed.
Next year we might see mlb on ps5 has I think we will have ps5 out by early part of 2020.

Not sure I remember being excited to see mlb the show on 14 leading up to it being shown for the first time and then I saw it and I felt disappointed right away. MLB the show on ps3 was by far the best looking sports game this gen not even close. Madden looks better and NBA 2k and nba live look way better when it comes to graphics not animations or any thing just graphics and I have not played nhl sense like nhl 2016 but it looked about has good has mlb 18 did.
