You might want to increase the basestealing success slider a click or two that seemed to help me last year(come to think of it I need to do this myself&#128521, it's right under the baserunner speed slider.

press L2 at the start of the at bat or on the count you want to steal on (cue to steal), once the pitcher sets up and is about to go in the pitching motion and press L1 for extra lead, once the pitcher goes in to motion, your baserunner will instantly break for the bag.
never seen a pitcher try picking you off because you are taking a your extra lead right before he goes in to motion and with good speed you swipe the bag 9 times out of 10. this is on default sliders

The basestealing slider doesn't seem to help at all. It only seems to help the CPU.

A lot of great tips in here

I personally just went to practice mode and practiced until I got 90% or better steal rate

My SB% went up using this technique.

On top of that, pick your spots. I NEVER steal a base (or run bases at all) before i check 2 things: Catcher arm and all 3 Outfielder arms, to know which ones i can test. (Then be agressive against those weaker outfielder arms. Don't forget arm accuracy in addition to strength. Some outfielders have powerful arms but couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat... MAKE them try throw you out at home with 2 outs. Or third with one out. Force the issue. Tip the cap if they get you...ok, back on topic...)

I steal bases even with so-so baserunner speed and steal ability, in the right situations using the technique i described above. Yes, i still get thrown out, but my SB% is more realistic.

OneTonneBaby gave some good tips that everyone should practice.

Also - Anticipate the pitchout in certain situations with speed on base. Try to go in counts that are unlikely to pitch out, unless you just want to guess. In the first 3 pitches its kind of a chess match between you and the pitcher. Going on breaking ball counts is good. So know the pitcher's tendencies. Sinker ball/slider pitchers that throw a lot of dirt balls are good to go on. But don't just willy-nilly pick a time to go. Have a plan.

Like OTB said, some pitchers have a slow delivery out of the stretch. This is huge. Take advantage of them.

              Watch the slide step.

If you have a so-so runner stealing, and the pitcher slide steps, protect your runner by at least trying to foul off the pitch, if not put it in play. Dont leave him hanging out to dry.

And, use the 'Hold L1 Through the Pitch technique' for a few games. They just get better jumps. Sounds crazy but take it from a former sceptic lol.

This year though the lower pitch speeds gave me too much time and I found myself waiting on everything which resulted in constantly late swings and poor contact.

I'll tell u right now that when runners, in real life, lean it's just a head play on the pitcher and catcher. Itd be cool to be able to do it and affect a rating or two, but I dont think the developers have plans to completely rework any facet of the game until a PS5 comes out.

Re: Has Anyone Had Success Stealing Bases?

I’ve been doing alright so far. Even stole a base with Brandon Drury I think he’s got 40 speed rating. I try to pay attention to any patterns I see the pitchers get into.

I almost never try to run on guys that throw 95+

When I think I have the count in my favour I press L2 pre pitch and hope for the best.

Probably a good idea all round tbh as baserunners are too slow in general. Those really slow guys are struggling to even get to second on a gapper that goes to the wall, while it's incredibly tough to score from second even on a two out single if your runner isn't legitimately quick. Same for scoring from first on doubles.

I'll definitely be upping that slider a couple of notches to see how it plays

As for stealing, the computer still never slidesteps with 2 balls or strikes, making steals incredibly easy in those counts (if they don't instakill you with their insane pick off skills)

The thing that baffles me is just how low the steal ability ratings are for most of my players. Take Albert Almora Jr. for example. I think his speed is low 60’s but his steal ability is 2! I mean, come on. A 2!?

I’m wondering if we edited these if that would make a difference.

I have noticed that too. Really, the whole base running system doesn't make any sense at all. Like Yadi Molina, default speed is at zero, ZERO!! like how? I know he is not fast by all means, but their ratings go to 99. So by that logic Molina shouldn't be able to run at all , just slow walk in the game. I have seen guys with up to 80 in speed, with a steal of 2 (makes no sense) Who ever does the ratings for this game at SCEA, is a nut job who shouldn't have access to a computer there, hand that man a broom and mop instead.

I never steal, crime doesn't pay. Can't do the time, can't do the crime. Speed kills but I'm deathly afraid it'll kill me

some of these guys are trying to get better, whether its stealing bases or powering a homer. This forum can be great for dialogue exchange to seek out needed wisdom. Good exchange of ideas. Sometimes we need a little coaching in addition to practice. We cant all be Willie Mays or Hank Aaron. Life, and baseball, are more interesting when it has its share of Mario Mendoza

More time with the game and I really feel like stolen bases aren't an issue. It seems that there's just a lot of factors that go into it. Last night I was able to go 4 for 4 on stolen bases with the pirates. I even stole second and third in one sequence. The very next game I went 1 for 4 though. It really helps to steal in proper counts and try and do it when your pretty sure a low breaking ball is coming. Right now I don't think it's an issue

I hear ya man. And I agree that over patching can ruin games. But there is two things I disagree on.

1.) some of us will never be that good. I will never be able to hit on legend or with pitch speeds on default. I accept this and I understand my lane. I adjust the sliders so that the game is a challenge but not to difficult that it will completely kill the fun factor.

2.) Some of us don't have that kind of time to put in. Some have full time jobs, families, etc. etc. and might be lucky to get a game in a night. I want to be able to pick up the game and have a fun and realistic experience. I don't want to have a game where I have to play everyday or my skills evaporate. The show is not the only sports game I play either.

I agree that the game is in a good place and needs to have higher difficulty for the higher level guys. What people need to realize is sliders are your best friend and you can always iron out problems you are having by working with sliders
