Re: Defense is AWFUL
Yeah, I've been thinking about it. I've played just less than a month into the season so far, so I'm thinking soon I'll have a large enough sample size and I'll check what my errors look like compared to the rest of the league. That could be an option.Comment

Clints arm is just fringey enough to move to right and his speed is nice but I'm always iffy on anybody under 60 on fielding. does he take any kind of fielding hit moving left to right?

Re: Defense is AWFUL
I think the additional errors are basically fine and appreciate the differences, especially in the infield. My only issues are:
1. basically fine outfielders getting completely frozen by normal fly balls;
2. jogging down a routine fly while facing it and watching it sail just over the outstretched glove; and
3. locked-in throwing animations during run downs. Nothing worse than conceding a base or even a run because your player decides to just ignore the throw you've loaded or not apply a tag.
Also, human team players react so much better to deflected balls this year, but it's still dumb how the CPU reads them more or less perfectly every time.Comment

If youre gonna make a thread about Defense being bad, then the great IgotSyphillis must respond. So...…"Defense is AWFUL." I like the use of capital letters. Shows me that you aint playing around. Obviously lets get one thing down straight off the bat. I will not be like the others on this thread and compare my defensive experiences with yours. Because everyone here knows I'm at a minimum at least 394 times better than you at this game. We've gone over this. I'm on a 4 year undefeated streak of never losing a game. Not just MLB The Show. Im also undefeated at NBA 2k19, NHL 19, Coach K College Basketball, Blades of Steel, Mario Golf 64, WrestleMania 2000, Battle Chess, and contests on whose poop smells the most like coconut oil. Im great at everything. I'm like a real life version of AC Slater. Youre like Screech. (excluding the chess episode and the cadet core episode) Its ok. Lets move on.
I am not here to insult. I am here to teach. Best way to avoid errors....stop playing. Youre not me. I don't make errors. One time when I was 6 years old I dropped my sno-cone in some dirt and decided the best way to clean it was putting it under hot water. That wasn't an error. That was the day I created rainbow flavored water. But we've already discussed my being the greatest human being alive, lets move on.
Back on topic, how to play better defense. It's simple. You ever see the movie Freaky Friday. When 2 people switch bodies and become somebody else? Find out how to do that in real life. Become me. And you will piss excellence. Until then, since defense has been the basically the exact same in this game since 2006, you can finally after 13 years accept its flawed for regular humans like yourself and deal with it.

Re: Defense is AWFUL
thats because the defense is trash. there's not even one countermove to stop the other mathletes. you're forced down the VCpath. thats the same problem with golf, for me: no defense whatsoever. pure garbage defense. thats why when you play something like the Show you can really appreciate the defense in the game. as someone who loves pitching in the Show more than hitting, I can attest to the old adage ''double plays are a pitchers best friend''. my absolute favorite double play in the Show isnt the 6-4-3, its a deep flyout to rightfield and gunning a runner out at the plate. or third. the jury is in, the defense rests: fielding & DP's are real in the Show. and they're spectacular.OSFM23 - Building Better Baseball - OSFM23

Re: Defense is AWFUL
I feel like my first and third basemen can't field anything hit directly at them.
They just do that animation where they drop to one knee and swipe the glove up in the air and the ball goes through them.
I'm using the Yankees; Luke Voit is my 1B and Gio Urshela and DJ LeMahieu split time at 3B....all should be making those plays.
What slider would control this? Fielding ability? Reaction?
Again, the balls are hit DIRECTLY at them and they just make a flailing motion and miss.Comment

Re: Defense is AWFUL
I've decided to try and be helpful as opposed to snarky like I was earlier.
There are two big problems with errors in this game at default.
1. The way they are calculated.
2. The fielder making a mistake is rarely counted as an error, even when it's the error engine that caused the error to happen.
So with issue number 1, based on my play testing, errors are caused by combining the fielder's ratings, the difficulty of the play, and the time since the last error in some formula in order to dictate when an error occurs. The issue with this is that at default, there are so few errors that the "time since last error" part of the equation gets rediculously high, essentially making the fielder's ratings and the difficulty of the play non-factors.
When you turn errors way up, you see a lot more minor errors, things like bad first steps from bad outfielders, and booting the ball on hard hit grounders by infielders. Here's the thing, even minor errors that still result in getting the out still count towards the "last time an error was seen" .
Just keep in mind that if you do choose to follow my advice and crank errors up, it takes a game or two for the engine to balance out the calculation, so you're going to see a lot of errors for a short burst, but in the long run it can help prevent elite fielders from making simple mistakes.
I've already talked about the second issue a little. The "errors" the engine and the slider are talking about are often not counted as errors by the scoreboard. I honestly don't know what kind of logic it uses but it's really quite random, and unfortunately means that pitchers often have to unjustly absorb a lot of errors into their ERA. No fix for this I'm afraid.
I've also started testing with raising the reaction slider, which should help with the specific situation mentioned in the OP.
Try to keep in mind though, errors should happen, even if the game refuses to count them as errors. Also fielding is deceptively difficult in this game. Most of the time when I watch other people play this game I notice that they are bad at fielding. I tried to write a guide for fielding, only to realize that most of what I know is just experience and muscle memory. It's kind of ineffable.
