Re: The commentary needs to focus on other stats

Real baseball fans LOVE random stats. When I hear Matty say:

"this season with runners in scoring position, Devers is hitting just under .250"

or "Lindor went 2 for 4 with a home run in yesterdays game"

or "you can see from the stat line shown, he's much better away from home so far this season."

Stuff like that goes a long way I wish there were a lot more of it.

I think you look at everything, but what I always go to 1st is OPS. Honestly if you take a player and line up their best season by OPS the order is the same for their WAR unless they are a great or a bad fielder. But certainly is the same order for oWAR. So to me if you want one star that says how good of a hitter they are, look at OPS. That is an easy calculation and very telling.

Defense is a lot harder. I hate fielding %. At best it says you are sure handed when it is hit to you, but a lot of errors are completely subjective to the scorer and it doesn't say anything about the range of a player. In Cincinnati this year there is a lot of talk about Freddy Galvis being close to or equal to Jose Iglesias for fielding at SS. Fielding % backs up that case, but every single advanced stat for fielding says they aren't even close.

If I want a quick answer for fielding I look at dWAR, it's not great but it says something.

Pitching again I look at everything, but so much can effect ERA, a ball that should have been an error is now a hit causes higher ERA. If you are a RP and you inherit a runner, you allow him to score but get the other guys out, you had a 0.00 ERA, but how effective were you. I love WHIP for my number one stat. Per 9's are also useful, along with FIP and ERA+

Wins Above Replacement (WAR) is an attempt by the sabermetric baseball community to summarize a player’s total contributions to their team in one statistic. You should always use more than one metric…

Here's a good place to start. Essentially they convert everything a player has done on the field into runs (runs "produced" on offense, and runs "saved" on defense/pitching), which is why many advanced sabermetric stats are in terms of runs (Defensive Runs Saved [DRS], Runs Created [RC], etc.). Then you convert all that into how many wins you have contributed to the team....along with some funky positional adjustments.

Not a perfect stat, but I think it's a pretty good measure of a player's total value. It's hard to argue with a stat that puts out a Top-10 list like Armor posted

He makes the list as a WAR "accumulator" I guess, but that's still an obvious Hall-of-Fame resume

I am just so sick of the starting pitcher when he warms up they crap on about how good he has been going or struggling based off his ERA, it would be just nice to hear them say 'his AVG is low better never mind that look at his OBP he gets on base.. or "his ERA is high look at his whip I am sure his luck will turn around'

                EDIT
can a mod please change to title from 'another' to 'other' haha I must have been half asleep when writing that.

What's very annoying to me is last year in RTTS I set a new MLB record for doubles in a season and reached 200 hits and there was no mention of either of them. It was treated like any other hit and double. Just ridiculous and extremely disappointed.

                  I guess it's a bit like QBR

The game does have the WAR stat but it has it's own coding, I don't know what the formula is that the game is used and if it even includes defensive stats as well. I even see players with high AVG have high WAR in the game sometimes.

This, nothing gets mentioned. Reach 200 hits, nothing, steal your 30th, 40, or 50th base of the season, no mention. Hit your 40 or 50 home run and join the 40/40 or 50/50 club, no mention. The game just cuts away.

I'm pretty bothered a lot of stuff I ended up missing in this RTTS iteration for 19. Made the majors out of camp in my second season but nothing on making it or making my debut as a pinch-hitter.

But hey, it's great to know every time I have four hits in a series, I have magically somehow driven in 10 RBI's with it.

Just a thought no big deal but I do love the fact that they say how many home runs a person has hit in the season and occasionally they say is Lifetime home run.

They never call out season number of home runs after the first home run of the game.
I would like them to add that on to his second home run of the game third home run of the game Etc
