Re: MLB The Show 20: Fictional Franchise Progress Thread

Almost through Spring Training in my Cubs Franchise. Few games left and it's been a struggle. Trying to upgrade at 2B and was so close to pulling the trigger on trade for Florival from Houston and his 15 yr contract! But I just couldn't do it.

When playing the ST games, I'm trying to get the guys who are fighting for spots in the field and on the mound the same number of AB/IP. Been fun seeing whos doing well and who needs to get sent back to the minors. Will post final roster in a couple days. Cannot wait to get this season going!

Be aware the more you play with this roster, the better it gets. I really don't think I can ever go back to a current or default roster.
This is so true! I don't even wanna play Madden now without fictional rosters. Bacon has truly changed the way I play sports games. To me it's so much easier getting immersed in my league than playing with real rosters.

Spring training is finally over! Finished strong winning last 6 out of 7 and ended up 13-14. Here is the Chicago Cubs opening day roster 2020. As spring training went on, the bullpen which was my biggest concern, really improved and has become quite solid. There were a few guys in the lineup that hit really well but there were more that just didn't! Gonna play around with the lineup as the season starts.

I am up against my budget and have very little wiggle room, which I kinda like, makes it more interesting to be limited to who I can trade for. I plan on keeping all the big contracts this first season unless it goes south fast! Then I might have to move some guys. Should be a fun season.

I wish the game kept more stats for spring training, but here's how things ended up.

        ugh...Reggie Kellogg, the 21 mil a year CF hit a whopping .169!

I had a couple guys playing terrible coming out of ST. One of them just never got it going. Luckily it wasn't someone that was making big money. So ultimately I was able to ship him off. His replacement didn't tear it up either but batting .120 as a big league ball player is unacceptable even off the bench.

Re: MLB The Show 20: Fictional Franchise Progress Thread

The All-Star Break for the 2021 season is here, and so far, the defending world champion Oakland A’s look like a sure thing to repeat.

At the break, we’re sitting in first place in the AL West with a 66-32 record, 12 games ahead of the LA Angels. As good as our record is, it’s not the best in all of baseball -- that belongs to the St. Louis Cardinals at 67-30.

Even though we’re winning, it’s definitely not because of our hitting. All offensive numbers are down this year, compared to last season where we were outslugging opponents and scoring runs in bunches. The bright offensive spot has been free agent pickup Percy Hopkins, who leads the team with 18 HRs and 53 RBI at the break; every other player has been average at best at the plate.

The team has been carried by the pitching staff, led by Vince Cartwright and Marty Stark. Both have ERAs in the high 1s and are 1-2 in MLB in strikeouts and wins.

Despite the lack of offense, this season has actually been fun because we’re getting the timely hits and staging great comebacks when we need them. Plus, we’ve been hit by a ton of injuries, so it’s been interesting having to use a lot of our AAA guys.

Memorable moments at the halfway point:

-- In all my years of playing The Show, I’ve never thrown a no-hitter/perfect game. Marty Stark changed all that with a masterpiece against Cleveland, striking out 11 in a 121-pitch no-no (3 walks though). Of course, there had to be a defensive play to save the no-hitter, and it was a jump throw from deep short by Junior Gonzalez to preserve it in the 8th.

-- Down 3-0 with 2 outs in the top of the 9th against the Angels, a rally gets us to 3-2. But with two runners on, our light-hitting AAA call-up infielder is at the plate. On a hunch, we pinch it Cartwright for him -- and after an 11-pitch at-bat, Cartwright hits a line-drive homer to dead center, just inches above JC Ray’s glove, to give us the 5-3 win.

-- At home against the Rangers, we’re down 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th but tie the game when they can’t complete the double play in time. In the 12th, we’re down 4-3, but a Dexter McCain solo shot ties it. In the 13th, down 7-4, a two-run double by Enzo Hamilton cuts the lead to 7-6, and a McCain single ties the game again. In the 16th, Reggie Kellogg ends it with a walk-off homer for the 8-7 win.

Oakland All-Stars: Cartwright, Stark, closer Brent Stevens, CF Bryce Lewis*

            Notable trades:
-- Traded OF LeAndro White and IF Casey Robinson to Diamondbacks for OF/1B Elijah Weeks
-- Traded 1B James Lofgren to Angels for RP Seth Thompson (not sure why, but they offered this trade and I just accepted … not realizing Thompson was also a good hitter!)*

            Trades made by contenders:
            - Indians acquired 1B Frankie Fernandez and RP Orlando Reyes from Red Sox for 2B Eddy Flores
            - Phillies acquired SP Jacob Quantrill from Mariners for 2B Maurice Carter and SS Billy Bradley
            - Nationals acquired SP Kaden Drake from Dodgers for SP Aaron Reeder, OF Alexis Moya, OF Raul Ruiz
            - Orioles acquired OF Brandon Johnson from Rockies for SP Leonel Perez, C Jamar Woodson, CF Dino Ynoa

Re: MLB The Show 20: Fictional Franchise Progress Thread

Starting to get back into my Braves franchise. After a disastrous year 1, we greatly re-tooled the roster (especially the rotation) and are off to a very solid 13-5 start.

              A few early-season storylines:

              - The overhauled rotation has been a blessing. Defending AL MVP/Cy Young Chip Wolf has been so-so; but Jose Rosales and Marty Melankon have been outstanding. The real intrigue is the development of youngsters Davis Wasiliewski and Lucas Morse. "D-Was" has been, in particular, much better in 2021.
              - 2020 1st round draft pick 3B Coleman Harper is living up to the hype. We knew he could field, but he's also been hitting for average as well. I don't expect a ton of pop in his rookie year, just for him to hold his own and man the hot corner. So far, so good.
              - The lineup is looking very top-heavy. I'll take my top 4 of Ray, Lockett, Keys, and Franklin over any other out there. But other than those 4 (and Franklin is struggling), the rest of the lineup has been unspectacular. We're going to need guys to step up or we're going to yield a lot of "easy innings" for opposing pitchers. The only other role player that has done much has been Caleb Graybow and he's blocked at his eligible positions.

Going to be an interesting season.

                  Bacon,

Many thanks to you for spending so many years refining these rosters. I have been playing exhibition games here and there in years previous to this one and have had fun doing so. Your work has inspired me to make my own fictional rosters as well.

While I have been working on my own project, I decided to start a franchise using your rosters this season. I picked the Washington Nationals primarily because of the offensive attack of Landry, Sorenson, and (insert SS here...brain fart on my part) I am playing on HOF with sliders at default, save for the trade slider and injury sliders.

I'd like to post a longer synopsis at the end of my season, but for now I will say that I am in mid-June and 20 games over .500 and in first place with only the NY Mets putting up any fight against me in my division.

It has been a blast so far trying to will players into keeping in line with their career stats/attributes, while others have played well above their stats...McMann is my primary CF, hitting above .300 with 25 steals despite his attributes fitting more of a fourth OFer mold...I like his swing and manage to dink a lot of pop ups into left that drop for hits. I also take a lot of pitches with him and make him super pesky for opposing pitchers.

Because my team is not connected to real life and everyone is editable, I have taken great joy in altering hair/beard length...and on occasion, batting stances for players as they are developing their own personalities based on my fictional world...slumps play a factor in that regard for sure...Over ton is slumping mightily and I have an rotation of OFs trying to make up for it (he is on the IL now).

One of the things I look most forward to are some of the end of the year decisions I will have to make regarding contracts... got some big FA decisions to make!

I'll write more later as the season unfolds! Thanks again!

Re: MLB The Show 20: Fictional Franchise Progress Thread

My Padres franchise is on hold until The Show '21 drops assuming it's good. The non-rotation of the inter league games bothers me. Also don't want to get caught mid season and have rule changes happen. If there is an issue with '21 I'll just go suck it up and play '20 again since it runs so well on PS5 anyway.

Still considering doing a minors only franchise and just letting the CPU make all the decisions.

Re: MLB The Show 20: Fictional Franchise Progress Thread

I'm so glad this thread is a thing! I've been heavily invested in my franchise mode that I've been playing since MLB 2019, used his 2019 fictitional roster. The only team that I did any tweaking on is my team in franchise mode, the Colorado Rockies. I got about 30 games into the 2019 season and I had some issues come up that sidetracked me from completing my franchise mode, or playing any video games in general. Long story short, I got back into gaming this March and I picked up MLB 20 The Show and picked up where I left off , continuing my 2019 season on MLB 20. I went thru the whole Rockies team and changed players names and appearances and attributes, just kind of personalized the team a little more, made the team a little more diverse; the Rockies have the perfect combination of youth and experience, have a nice balance of power, contact hitting and speed without making my team too stacked, although many of my players are playing way above their pay grade.

My 1st Baseman, Doug Spaulding is 37 and putting the finishing touches on a fairly good career, he has definitely slowed down on the base paths and is strictly a power hitter, known for striking out almost 3 times as many times as he walks, has been heavily compared to Pujols. We are 88 games into the season and has everybody scratching their heads; after an expectedly slow start, barely hitting above the .230 mark going into May, he has absolutely erupted of late; he is hitting .293 with 28 homeruns and 67 RBI, has even himself considering coming back for one more season as he appears to have a little more left in the gas tank. LF Jamal Logan, arguably the most talented ballplayer in the league is the current front runner for the MVP award, leading the MLB in All Star votes and also making a serious run at the Triple Crown, trailing only his teammate Spaulding in the homerun department with 27, he is leading the league with 91 RBI, and currently second in batting average with a .361 and an incredible 1.192 OPS. Has shown some flash on the base paths with 19 SB and only being gunned down 5 times. Third Baseman Weston Boggs is finally living up to his full potential and having a career season after failing to impress his first 8 seasons, batting .331 with 13 homeruns and 63 RBI, also scoring 57 runs and ranking second in N.L. 3rd base All Star votes. Second baseman Damien Winters has been a welcome surprise batting in the 2 hole, making a name for himself as a pesky hitter who rarely strikes out and always seems to get on base, racking up an exceptional .351 batting average, making up for his lack of pop, holding down a .407 OBP, scoring 61 runs and providing plenty of stability in the infield with his glove work.

The Rockies offense is second to an amazing rotation of starting pitching, leading the league with a team ERA of 2.32. Their ace is none other than Maclin White, who leads the league in almost every major pitching category, holding down a 1.82 ERA, in 153 innings pitched he has racked up 197 K's, a stellar 13-2 record and has walked only 19 batters. He has a nasty repertoire; a 97 mile an hour 4 seamer, a biting slider that is notorious for locking up left handers, a brutal 2 seamer that likes to run in on the right handers and a filthy change up with some nice late movement. A solid bullpen helps support their starters and keeps the Rockies in contention late in the game , most notably Daichi Kojima their workhorse who has racked up 63 1/3 innings out of the bullpen, with a respectable 2.45 ERA. He is difficult to hit with his submarine release, utilizes several pitches that all have a sinking motion, and a slider that keeps batters on their toes. He has been prone to the long ball though when he misses up high with his sinker, but has put in plenty of practice as of late, working overtime on his control and looks to improve on his location. Closer Dominick Mitchell is currently 3rd in the league with 27 saves in 29 tries, sports an ERA of 2.26, an incredible 70 strikeouts in 37 innings pitched, almost 2 K's per innings pitched. Has explosive stuff, headlined by his 102 MPH heater that gives even the guys with incredible bat speed all kinds of problems, and has a 73 mile an hour palm ball that contrasts sharply with his fastball, keeping batters honest.

Last week I began working on making the rosters a little more of my own by editing appearances for several players, changing some names, and editing attributes, etc just to put my own spin on things. I finally completed my NL edits. Plan on getting the AL wrapped up by the weekend and starting a fantasy draft franchise.

Finally started a Minor League only franchise. The CPU will be controlling everything even the lineups and batting order. Went with the Bowie Baysox for no real reason. Only criteria was not playing in the same league as my Padres minor league affiliates. Only played one game so far and got smacked around by the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-2. Didn't get a hit until the 6th inning my two runs did come off solo homers so that was good.

Glad you're into it. The Nats are a great team to play with. (Their shortstop is Howard Thompkins!) They have a lot of moving parts after years 1 and 2 so you can really turnover the team quickly if you're motivated. Also, if you need any assistance with your own creation, hit me up. I can provide advice or direction if prompted.

Wasn't going to do the monthly recaps with this minors franchise but I don't mind streaming some games. I'll post a link when I do. I know one thing 350+ games with the Padres I learned all their tendencies and how best the to use them. Starting this Baysox experiment is like learning to walk again lol.
