Re: MLB The Show 20: Fictional Franchise Progress Thread

Streaming again. Going up against the Erie SeaWolves. Going to try and play two games so I'll be live for a while.

Edit: 2 games done and dusted. Lots of homeruns, some terrible errors and some struggles trying to throw the knuckle ball correctly. Also with the game running at 60fps on the PS5 the error animations don't seem as choppy. They still are a bit rough but look better.

I said it while using my minor league affiliates in my Padres franchise but the baseball is in the minors is a lot of fun. If you haven't tried it give it a go.

Sidenote: If the one person who said hey in the chat is from the forums my bad my notification didn't ding that I got a message. My bad.

I'm using the latest Bacon roster and some of the generic players "New Fielder" have made it to AAA on some rosters. Have any of these guys made it to MLB in anyone's franchise? Should I have deleted these players from the roster before I started?

The usually don't. 45 years old within zero potential and only 1 overall so they're designed to retire after year one.

I'm going to set a target of Friday nights at 8pm EST as a live stream target. Might be on Twitch instead of YouTube. Depends on which one I can get the best quality going with my ISPs poor upload speed lol.

Re: MLB The Show 20: Fictional Franchise Progress Thread

I finally got back into my Braves franchise (in Yr 2). After a really hot 12-3 start, we fell back to Earth, falling to 14-10 on the year, punctuated by a 16-4 shellacking by the Nats (lead by King Hitter's 3 HRs, including his 300th career homerun). Since that, we won 2 straight tight games vs the mediocre Pirates.

This team has been maddeningly inconsistent across the board, aside from Paul Keys and number 2 starter Jose Rosado. Not really considering any major moves right now, but I think we may shuffle around the order a little as it has been very "top heavy". Hoping to see some of our slower starting guys pick things up as we finish out April and get into May.

Re: MLB The Show 20: Fictional Franchise Progress Thread

Well, I think I'm back into the swing of things. Played three more games last night. All very different games.

The first game was a 5-3 win in 11 innings to complete a 3 game sweep of the Pirates (coming off the heels of a 4 game losing streak). One cool thing was that second year pitcher Davis Wasielewski pitched an immaculate inning in the 2nd inning of the game. Only the second time I've managed that since I've played MLB: The Show.

The second game was a 4-0 win over the Nationals as Marty Melankon pitched a CG with 9ks. All 4 of our runs came in the first inning and then we missed cashing-in several opportunities.

The third was a 11-8 loss to the Nationals. End of April and we've allowed double-digit runs in two games this season, both within a week and both vs the Nats. As an aside, I'm really glad I went for Bobby Lockett over Gordan Landry in the off-season....Landry has had several defensive miscues at 2B in the 5 games I've played vs them thus far.

We're now in a 3-way tie for first in the ultra-competitive NL East (and honestly, the two teams further back (the Mets and Marlins) are probably the better teams). It's going to be a heck of a season...

Well I guess I'm not meant to stream. 2nd time I couldn't get a full game. Game crashed this time, last time the stream just stopped working. Only 3rd or 4th crash I've had on PS5. Well at least it wasn't during my Padres franchise.

Re: MLB The Show 20: Fictional Franchise Progress Thread

Had "one of those games" last night in my Braves chise.

It was game 14 of a 16 game stretch without an off-day. Game 1 of a 3 game set with the Cubs. There was an 11 MPH wind blowing straight-in from CF. As expected, not a lot of offense. Scoreless game going into the 9th. We get a bases-loaded rally snuffed out. Bottom of the 9th...Cubs get a bases loaded rally...and it gets snuffed out. Game remains scoreless. We go to the bottom of the 13th; Cubs get a walk, a single and then laced a double into the gap for a 1-0 win. I somehow managed to keep two relievers (who had pitched the night before) out of the game....they should both be fully rested for game 2 of the series. But, one of my rookie starters will be going...we're going to need a strong outing from him. If the wind is blowing out...it could get really ugly (for both sides). It just never seems to fail that those long games happen in the middle of a long stretch without an off-day...but it's why I love playing every game.

In other news (since my last update):

                          - We executed our first trade of 2021; sending three players to the Yankees for young SS Byron Joseph. Byron isn't much with the bat, but he's a superior defensive player. In the several games we've had so far with him, he's been pretty much as advertised....sucky bat, but smooth with the glove. We have an intriguing SS prospect down in AA, but he's going to need a year or two of development. Byron will have every opportunity to develop at the big league level.
                          - We signed veteran OF Will Sweet to a 2 year deal. Sweet had a mediocre 2020 and was left out in the market. Decent defensive player as well. He'll serve as a 4th OF for us and the short-side of a LF platoon with Jorge Aguilera. Will has been on the squad for about a week. Nothing too flashy yet, but he's been what we needed.
                          - We also suffered our first key injury, losing starting catcher Christopher Templeton for 2-3 months. What's interesting here is that he had been losing ABs to backup Dezi Ruiz - who has been mashing for us. Dezi is now going to be our primary starter vs RHP and will probably even get some ABs vs lefties. Dezi is fun because he's one of those guys that if you looked at his ratings, you'd think...meh. But..he has average power vs RHP and a pretty good set of hot zones. Combined with a compact, uppercut swing and he really stings balls - he's hit 6 HRs already in limited ABs.
                          - Our two defending MVPs are struggling. NL MVP Mason Franklin is hitting HRs (on pace for 40), but he's been very streaky...bouncing between .230 and .250 batting average. AL MVP Chip Wolf (who we signed to a mega deal) hasn't exactly been "bad"...but he's been hit hard in 3 or 4 of his starts. He's still at a respectable 3.5 ERA, but I expect more out of him. Of the two, Mason worries me the most...he's in his mid-30s and he's going to decline. But..he still hits bombs and plays a fantastic defensive game at 1B. We're considering dropping him in the order a notch (vs RHP) but need to figure out who would occupy the 2nd slot in the batting order (allowing us to move Lockett to the 3-hole and Keys to the 4-hole).

Well, that's all for now...we're sitting at 24-18 on the season...still in a 3-way battle for first in the NL East. After a massive rebuilding campaign in 2020, I had hoped this would be a little easier going as a GM. But, this season may be even more trying...we have to push a couple of buttons and add some roster depth. But with minimal resources, I'm going to have to get creative if a few guys don't begin bouncing back.
Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.

Streamed another game on twitch there was an unexpected inside the park homerun. I take runs anyway I can.

I'm liking cycling the the minor league teams more than doing a single team minors only franchise. Keeps things fresh a nice change of pace from having the Padres as my sole focus.

Sweet is very versatile. I didn't renew his contract because I had brought in better options and he wanted to be an everyday player. He should be a solid 4th OF though.
