Re: MLB The Show 20: Fictional Franchise Progress Thread

My Braves franchise is rolling right through September (I've completed nearly a month of the schedule in the last 10 days...).

It's September 11 in the calendar. We're about 3.5 games up on the Phillies (they have one extra game) and have made it through the final long gauntlet stretch of the season. Still some tough games left vs the Nats (and Cardinals - who are in a battle for a WC); but it's a manageable schedule. Newly-acquired catcher Rene Castro continues to be a major force offensively (I think he's mashed a dozen HRs since we traded for him at the deadline).

The parity in the MLB is crazy right now. No teams have clinched a playoff appearance yet. The widest divisional race is 5.5 games (the NL West - where the surprising Padres, a last place team in 2020, are leading). The AL is particularly crazy, where 5 teams are all within 1.5 games of a wild card berth.

One other "fun fact" about this 2021 season: two players (1 per league) are putting themselves in Triple Crown contention (Jimmy Lowe and Michael Mayfield). Lowe's chances are slipping (partly due to my Mason Franklin mashing taters) but Mayfield has a good shot.

Hoping to finish-up the regular season in the next week or so...then (hopefully) on to the playoffs (no...I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch).
Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.

Mayfield is a beast. Legit 30/30 guy. I had Lowe in one of my early chises. He’s a fun player.

He honestly has a chance to be a 50/50 guy year 1.

            WHAT’S WRONG WITH THE PADRES

Last year San Diego won the NL West on 95 wins, took Philadelphia to the 5th game of the ALDS and the future was looking bright. To say the 2022 season has been a disappoint would be an understatement. As we head into June the Padres find themselves last in the NL west (26-35), 16.5 games back of the Rockies and 7.5 games back of a wild card spot.

At the plate the Padres have been par for the course from their previous season. They don’t produce a lot of runs and have always been a bit pedestrian in the batters box. The two power bats of Dallas Phillips and Percy Hopkins have been a disappointment this far in the season. As of June 1st, Phillips is batting .217, in 226 at-bats. Hopkins who led the Friars in home runs last year, currently the RF is batting .196 in 138 at-bats.

On the mound is where the struggles really are though. The entire pitching staff has just been off. Back to back Cy Young Winner, Kole Robertson in 13 starts has already lost 3 games which is what he lost all of last year. Josh Spikermann who was sent down to the AAA club but has been recalled to start the month is showing his age, so far in 17 appearances out of the pin has an 8.38 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. Normally closer Train Lucas is struggling with a 4.58 ERA, 3 Blown Saves and has already allowed more runs and equaled HR allowed with only a third of the season gone.

Fast Fact: Of the 35 losses the Padres have suffered this year they’ve only been held scoreless 1 time a 0-4 loss to the Dodgers on April 4th.

            Swinging Friars:
            Dylan Netzel - .312 BA, 7 HR, 21 RBI, .476 SLG% and .823 OPS
            Willy Benavides - .311 BA, 4 HR, 22 RBI, .425 SLG%
            Mickey Johnson - .304 BA and .424 SLG% and .360 OBP% in 92 at-bats
            Kris Dodsin - 6 HR, 14 RBI, .512 SLG% in 82 at-bats
Alexzander Starks (Leads All-Star Voting for Relief Pitchers) - 1.93 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 59 strikeouts through 42 innings pitched (4W-1L)

            San Diego Chickens:

              Padres 2022 Draft Results
              Draft Grade: B
The 2022 draft has come and gone. This is the 3rd draft under the Padres current GM and is possible the best overall draft from this front office. The Padres addressed some needs and drafted players that definitely have the potential to have long careers at the highest levels and players that will strengthen those around them in the minor leagues. It might be a while before we see if this draft class is as good as predicted.

              Bobbie McCoy (LF) 1st Rnd
              21 y.o. | 6’3” | 182 lbs | Bats: S | Throws: R
              65 Ovr | 84 Pot.
Pros: Above average power, elite speed and baserunning
Cons: Slow Reaction, low vision and discipline
McCoy has the potential to see a few years in the majors, a below average defender that will need to make use of his speed to make up for the shortcomings.

              Raul Anaya (1B) 2nd Rnd
              21 y.o. | 5’10” | 180 lbs | Bats: L | Throws: R
              62 Ovr | 78 Pot.
Pros: Above average vision and discipline
              Cons: Injury prone
Depending on his progression Anaya seems to be one of those AAAA type players. Ability to be a starter but likely to bounce between the bigs and AAA given the current depth of the organization.

Coco Quintana (CF) Competitive Balance Round B
              20 y.o. | 5’11” | 186 lbs | Bats: R | Throws: R
              62 Ovr | 68 Pot.
              Pros: Ironman, Speed
              Cons: throwing arm and accuracy
Cesar has ability to make a 40 man roster. Mostly likely will only see time in the majors in spring training and during September call-up

              Napolean Hendrix(C) 3rd Rnd
              22 y.o. | 6’2” | 193 lbs | Bats: R | Throws: R
              66 Ovr | 76 Pot.
Pros: Above average contact, vision and discipline
              Cons: Injury prone
If not for Hendricks’ frailty he could be a star at the major league level. Hendrick has elite skills at the plate, however is slightly less impressive on defense but could develop into a solid major league player.

              Alfonso Cairo (RP) 4th Rnd
              18 y.o. | 6’2” | 199 lbs | Bats: S | Throws: L
              63 Ovr | 64 Pot.
Pros: High K/9, above average control and break
              Cons: Low Ceiling
Alfonso is the definition of a lifelong minor league player. Just a relief pitcher.

              Koji Kaneko (SP) 5th Rnd
              19 y.o. | 5’10” | 170 lbs | Bats: S | Throws: R
              62 Ovr | 81 Pot.
              Pros: Age, High Ceiling
              Cons: None
In the right environment Kaneko has the potential to become a fixture at the major league level. At only 19, he’s has a number of years to go in the minors but could be a steal of the later rounds.

              Rusty McCloud (SP) 6th Rnd
              22 y.o. | 5’11” | 180 lbs | Bats: S | Throws: R
              61 Ovr | 75 Pot.
              Pros: Stamina
              Cons: H/9
McCloud's career could go either way, a hard thrower that can go deep into games. He’s a pitch to contact type of guy and seems to falter when there is traffic on the base path.

                Padres Making Moves

The Padres and Cardinals have completed a 5 players swap late Wednesday night. The Padres sent Angel Perez (3B), Andres Del Villar (SS) and Darnell Sanders (LF) to St. Louis for Kenji Tackett (3B/IF) and Jhonatan Veras (SP)

Perez was acquired via trade last year but has failed to yield consistent results. Del Villar a 2020 2nd Round pick has performed well at both AA and AAA levels but the front office felt he has already hit his ceiling. Sanders was signed in the off-season but failed to impress in ST and struggled in AAA.

Kenji Tackett was drafted in the first round of the 2020 draft. Tackett is projected to have a solid major league career but the Cards see the acquisition of Perez, Del Villar and Sanders as adding depth to an aging squad and Del Villar is expected to be their new starting SS. Veras was included in the package for budgetary reasons.

After drawn out negotiations San Diego has enlisted the services of 33 y.o. free agent Bronco McClendon. McClendon signed a $6.1mil 2 year deal. San Diego is hoping McClendon can perform better than Perez and will add a much needed right handed power hitter.

San Diego also signed shortstop and utility player Dizzy Figgins to a one year minor league deal.

As the Padres struggle these recent moves are both a sign of trying to salvage the season and setting the team up to come back stronger in 2023.

                  Hey everybody,

I'm making a shift more towards posting a lot in my discord, on Twitter and live-streaming on Twitch instead of being super active on here.

If you're still playing with my roster on MLB20, are seeking updates for the new roster on MLB21 or generally just enjoy the game, you should join my newly created discord! The group has risen to nearly 120 users since its creation in February. It's a great place to chat about franchise mode and a place where you can have one-on-one interaction with me daily so if you're interested here's a link.

I also frequently post updates (including lots of pictures) on my Twitter which you can find here.

Lastly, I plan on streaming 2-4 days a week live on Twitch! I play with the most updated roster with two rebranded teams (the Atlanta Kings and Cleveland Spiders) and will likely stream some of the recreation process on there. You can get instant updates on what I'm up to on my Twitch channel which can be found here.

Thank you all again for all of the support here on OS. It's been a blast but I find myself spending less and less time on this site.

Has anyone taken BigVarsity's MLB re-brands and done a re-alignment franchise? i.e. NYY/Red Sox/Mets all in AL East, using Bacon's roster?

Started playing around with new uniforms in anticipation of another run. Just did a fantasy draft to mess around with things and see these guys on the field (it'll eventually be a fictional franchise league set). Pretty happy so far. Need a few tweaks (I think "Seawolves" is a little low-centered on the homes). Team is the Norfolk Seawolves. Nofolk being a major US Naval base, and Seawolf being a US Submarine class (there's a gray seawolf coming out of the "O" in both uniforms). The "N" Primary logo has comm towers poking over the ridge, as well. Colors are "Seawolf Gray" (dark gray), "Atlantic Sea Foam" (sea foam light green), "Atlantic Aqua" (a darker teal) and "Submarine Gray" (a lighter gray used only for triming).

This is captured on MLB '21, but figured they fit in the fictional franchise thread better than anything. I also may switch to playing on MLB '20 with the same uniform set up considering how much of a mess '21 is in present state.

Thanks! I felt like it fit the theme of a nautical, submarine based name sake. Gray and cold-tones that imply water. Also felt it was unique in the MLB landscape; which is usually my goal...find a team identity that fits in an unique niche' in the MLB. Actually went into this year thinking I'd make the "Yellow" MLB team (a color that has no footprint outside of very small group who offers it only as a secondary or tertiary color)...and I ended up bleak and cold (though, considering my last year's team was the Newfoundland Admirals, I should have known I'd go maritime theme).
