MLB the Show 21: A Franchise Wishlist

Let's face it, the game is beautiful. The graphics are on-point, the players look great for the most part, the create-a-player feature has more or less everything you could ask for, but there is one thing lagging behind: Franchise Mode. It's gotten a little dusty as other features like Diamond Dynasty, March to October, Moments, and other features have gotten a lot of love. I think OSFM shows how big of a deal Franchise mode is to the fans of this game, and I really hope that 2021 is the year that they put most of the energy into upgrading it because as much as I enjoy it, we could really use a facelift in that department.

It would be awesome if we could pool our ideas together and get SDS's attention on a few things that I think are very attainable that could really make big strides in playability and uniqueness that we all crave.

    1) Larger Rosters - OSFM is a perfect example of the constant struggle to get all of the "top prospects" but also the organizational filler guys onto one 90-Man Roster. We've all chosen to bump out Low-A guy we like into Double-A because we want to be able to either play as that player or at the least get stats for that player over the course of a franchise.

I think having a 120-Man roster would be the best way to go with full playable 26-Man rosters for MLB, AAA, and AA as we already have, and then a 26-Man unplayable league for Single-A that would combine the best of your High-A and Low-A potential prospects that is sim-only, with a 16-Man "Rookie League" option that doesn't even sim, it just holds players like a vault that may graduate into Low-A the following year.

I'd even be willing to drop AA as playable to get that feature.

    2) Better Free Agency - The logic for Free Agency is a little bit of a mess and I think it could really use an overhaul. My suggestion would be that as part of your end-of-the-season clean-up, you have to choose an "Agenda" for the teams that you're controlling and then the CPU would choose an "Agenda" for the teams that you're not. They would base this information off of where they finished in relation to the other teams in their league and division, the productivity of each position, what their farm system looks like, and what their reputation/budget looks like.

The Agendas would be tier based.

So maybe something like: "Making A Splash": and they're going to go after one or two of the 90+ OVR free agents. "In The Hunt" and that team is in on guys in the 80+ OVR range. "Retooling" and that team is looking to build around the edges of their major league roster to slightly improve on the previous season and may only add someone in the 75+ OVR. "Value Shopping" and that team is only going to be interested in guys who at say 75 OVR or under.

Just something that will make it clear that Mookie Betts isn't going to be signing with the Royals or something like that and create some consistency to the way these teams approach their offseasons.

    3) Contract Terms - We all have this issue, don't we? Someone super valuable that would sign a 10-15M/yr multi-year deal is willing to take a one-year deal worth like $2M. Or a younger player is furious he's making renewable or arbitration numbers because some young player who signed a mega deal has kinked up the expectations in morale. This has been improved upon a ton already for younger guys, and that's great, but the veteran guys are still lagging behind on this one.

    4) International Free Agents - I would kill to have NPB and KBO players posted each offseason in MLB the Show. Maybe like a tab or an "seasonal event" that has 10 players that are being "scouted internationally" and each team whether it's user controller or CPU, they can signal interest or lack of and then come winter maybe 2 or 3 of those 10 players gets posted to the free agent pool. I imagine a similar process could even be done to include Cuban players into this system. Just something that will allow teams to bring in a potential star to their clubs almost instantly, and some fresh blood into the game.

    5) Uploadable Draft Classes - Much like you see in other games where they have draft classes ready to be uploaded, this would be amazing. Once OSFM stops, you would have people working on the draft class and by the time you hit it in-game, you'd be able to select "Generate Draftees or Upload A Draft Class" on Draft Day and off to the races you would go.

    6) Import Teams - Rebranding a team is so cool, but I really don't want to have my half-*** attempt at turning the Tampa Bay Rays into the Montreal Expos look so off that I can't even enjoy it. Someone who is far more talented who can make the team and then I can import them over a team is definitely the way to go. Look at how NBA 2k20 does it with their vault. That's by far the best way to do it. Let's get some ability to rebrand our teams that doesn't make it look like crap. There's a reason we import player faces into our rosters, some of us just aren't made to be building faces or uniforms.

Those are just a few of my ideas, what does the rest of the community want to see happen to Franchise Mode for 2021?

    Community Ideas:
    • Rotating Inter-League Schedules.
    • Editable Managers (YES, PLEASE!)
    • Add Custom Uniforms without losing the existing uniforms.
    • Better CPU Bullpen logic so that the proper relievers are called into situations that they should be called in form.
    • Roster logic, this will be a big help to start a franchise with just one team and not all 30 in order to make the roster, lineup and rotation make sense. Maybe just have the CPU not able to change the roster you load before starting a franchise.
    • Import players into an already created franchise.

I'm looking for pretty much the same list we've had on here for the last 5 years. We'll all keep dreaming...

      Rotating interleague schedules

      Editable managers

Add custom unis without doing a complete rebrand or removing current unis.

CPU bullpen logic needs to be fixed so they use the proper relievers in situations that call for it.

Roster logic, this will be a big help to start a franchise with just one team and not all 30 in order to make the roster, lineup and rotation make sense. Maybe just have the CPU not able to change the roster you load before starting a franchise.

The rest of the suggestions above I’m in agreement with. Hopefully with the PS5 they can make all of this happen.

agree. it just seems we make these wishlists every year but MAYBE 1 thing from the list gets implemented.

I’m pretty happy with the addition of custom teams to franchise. Though I don’t use it, I can tell others on the forum are having fun with it. I think it validates us franchise die-hards a bit that SDS is listening to some of our wishes and not just catering 100% to DD players.

That being said, I agree wholeheartedly with OP on the wishlist and I hope the positive changes continue. I’m hoping for roster expansion most of all, especially now that rosters have expanded to 26.

So to elaborate in regards to player moral, I would love to see a player personality added into team moral. For example you could have a superstar caliber player that puts up the number but is trouble in the clubhouse and causes unhappiness to others. and likewise you could have a below average bench utility guy that ignites fires in the clubhouse and gives the rest of the team a boost even though he himself inst very good.

make you have to decide if a guy is worth keeping on the team or not.

Re: MLB the Show 21: A Franchise Wishlist

Basically, this is an obvious, but give me OotP for the off the field stuff and The Show for the on field gameplay and I'll never stop playing the game.

                  Expanded Rosters
You can definitely make the argument that we do not need every single level of the organization like OotP does. I get that argument completely. That said, we also are at a point right now where 90 just doesn't cut it anymore. I personally would love to have every level of the organization in the game, but know the majority of players would feel overwhelmed or not even delve into it. I agree with the OP that it needs to be 120 players at minimum per organization.

                  Enhanced AI
This one kind of goes without saying, but I'll say it anyways. The front office aspect of franchise mode is lacking. The AI is dumb more often than not and they have no concept of building towards a goal. I would like to see the AI constantly evaluating itself and setting up visions for itself that dictate the transactions made. These visions can be influenced by the staff the organization has in the clubhouse and in the front office.

Some GMs think they can turn a bad team around in one season. They think they can buy a contender in the offseason, cough Padres cough. Other teams know that they need to "tank" for a few years to build a contender. This isn't represented too well in The Show. Yes, teams brand themselves the different types like Contender, Rebuild, and that influences their transactions slightly, but it still feels too weak.

I would love to see teams actually setting up plans that are multiple seasons long. Team A may set up a 3 year plan where they build to have a roster that will be fighting for the division in 3 years. This means they are looking more for guys that will be either be ready for the Big Leagues in 2-3 years or guys that will be entering their prime around that time. They'll also be looking for the token veteran or two for that team. This controls what prospects they are looking for, how they value the current roster makeup through the organization. Instead of being in the simplified Rebuilding phase The Show has now where they just value any prospect more and any veteran less, they'll actually value prospects differently based on their ETA's. They'll be willing to take on heavier contracts in return for geting some prospects with that washed up budget killer.

I really think Franchise mode would benefit greatly with the AI setting up goals that can take multiple seasons to achieve like OotP does in a sense as well. Some teams are in win now at all costs and should make moves that reflect that. Other teams are building to be a division title competitor in 3 years. Others build to win the whole thing in a 5-year plan. This type of contextual thought process being brought to the AI would be great.

                  Rotating Interleague Schedule
Not much else to be said. This needs to be in the game moving forward.

                  International Facilities & Free Agents
Another aspect that may overwhelm some Franchise players, but I would really appreciate the ability to discover some 16 year-old kid that looks to be a future star and sign them. I'd love to have a free agent market separate from the traditional free agent market. Being able to put money towards the international market or not spend as much would separate teams more and create even more uniqueness to the mode.

                  Expanded Staff
An actual GM and a few key front office roles. Expanded staff at each level of the organization. More dynamic affects from the staff as well. Can we get rid of the simplistic +3 Fielding -2 Speed affects the current coaches give and have it be more organic and not as clear. Make manager-player relationships matter. Have each manager unique with separate profiles that dictate what they value, what their tendencies are, etc. This should be applied to all staff. Some bench/base coaches are okay with where they are, others are ambitious and looking to move up the ladder with any organization. Some managers are constantly making managerial moves in game, others let the game play out and sometimes are too lax. Right now all managers are dictated by the same AI. GMs would all have different personalities, values, etc. Building relationships with GMs of other teams would make the front office aspect of the mode more dynamic. You may see a guy you really want in Organization A, but you and that manager either have never dealt with one another before or have a sour relationship and he is asking for too much for that player and you never get him. Yet, in another instance, another player may have a good relationship with that GM, they've done deals together, helped one another out eating contracts or whatnot, and he's willing to give you that player for a more fair price.

                  Stories off the field
This is where OotP really kills The Show. Sports are all about the stories. These stories make memories and make the game special. I want to hear about what some players are doing off the field even if it's just something like they have a charity golf tournament. I want to hear about some locker room antics. I want to have some generic post game article write-ups with interviews of players that are actually tied to their personalities. I want to actually see trade rumors that have merit to them, contract talks that have merit to them, etc. I hate that in the Show it is just BOOM, a transaction is done. I would love to see a story that the Astros and Mariners are in talks for players A, B, and C. This may kick me in the butt and make me overpay for player B if he was someone on my radar. I'd love to have a shortlist of potential 1B free agents in the upcoming year, then see that the Orioles are in talks with extending the contract with their stud 1B who I had on my shortlist.

I'd love to hear about a guy raking in AA, then AAA, then see some stories about his expected debut being soon. Then I'd love to see his debut reported on and maybe he is followed for sometime and depending on how well he does or not those stories just fall off or follow him all year if he turns into RotY material. I'd love a weekly recap hub where I can just see how each team/player did in the week. I can see how much tighter division or WC races got. I could see a recap of transactions for that timeframe as well.

                  Revamped UI
This sort of goes with the above, but Franchise mode needs a revamped UI to go along with some of these ideas. A front page that shows you what you need to know about your organization, but also has headlines that show what is happening around the league. A hub for the MLB, AAA, AA, etc. that allows you to see the storylines that have developed in those arenas.

                  Actual Negotiations
Instead of every deal in any sense being an immediate Yes or No in the game, I'd love to offer a FA a contract and they take time to go over it and field other offers and then tell me their thoughts. They could even lead me on to believe I am being outbid and I fall for it and offer them $3 million more and they sign and it turns out I may have gotten them with my original offer. I'd love to offer a guy an extended contract and he takes 2 days before he responds. This would create tension, actual battles for players/staff, and just make the mode more dynamic, fun, and realistic.
“No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth.”

Loved the opportunity to use Stan the man in 1st name category that we could add to his last name Musial so you'd end up with Stan the man Musial. loved it!
I would like The Show 21 to expand on this and mix it up like for instance.
Audio "Stan Musial" half the time and "Stan The Man Musial" the other half. Just mix it up.
Sometimes you just want the nickname alone like "Charlie Hustle" then "Pete Rose" the other half of the time.
                      List:
                      First..................nickname...............last
                      Phil...................Scooter........Rizzuto
                      Ted.....The Splendid Splinter.....Williams
                      Hank........Hammering Hank.......Aaron
                      Willie.........The Say Hey Kid..........Mays
                      Ron..............The Penguin...........Cey
                      Mickey...........The Mick............Mantle

Got to give us the option to include the nickname with the last name or alone and Don't exclude 1st and last name to be announced half the time separately For variety like in real life.

Other nicknames the wizard of oz... the bambino...Iron Horse... the big unit... the big hurt... Mr. Cub... the sandman... big papi...
Hope I explained it clear enough This would be a lot of fun.
Oh two more requests could you add "Strawberry" in last name audio and "Satchel " To the 1st name audio please.
Thank you for adding so many historic names so far.

While starting a fantasy draft I would like to be able to sort/filter through players by attributes/skill set. Example: If I’m looking for the highest rated base stealer or best contact vs lefties in the late rounds i should be able to just sort it.

I just want to be able to edit coaches. Even if they want to prevent me from changing their physical appearance, just let me edit the uniform number!

For some reason, they gave the Yankees some black guy with a mustache as the third base coach this year. I fired him, but it was a real pain in the *** to replace him.

The ONLY coach that wears #88 (Orlando Lingo) has black hair and pointy sideburns and doesn't look anything like Phil Nevin.

The coaches that DID resemble Phil Nevin all had uniform numbers that I didn't want them to have (2,3,4,5, etc RETIRED NUMBERS for the Yankees or numbers somebody on the team already had).

I don't know why after all these years they can't just let us edit the damn coaches.
