I just want to say that I hate having to click to read the article. I come here on the forums to read information. I shouldn't have to be redirected to a website. Just post the same article in the forums. I'm guessing you get paid ad revenue for the total amount of website clicks.

Last year I had trouble in the beginning getting outfielders to "suck into" animation and dropped way too many flyballs. One of the patches corrected it.

I want to see standout infielders matter. I can use a weaker ss and still make the same diving plays in the hole.

Hopefully there will be more that will be revealed.

So from the perspective of playing auto fielding and manual throwing with buttons only. No meter. I did want to address the standout infielders.

Disclaimer: not sure what you have you fielding set as so I am going from my perspective here. Also not arguing, just sharing what I have seen.

In my Indians franchise in 2027, I had a 3B who had 96+ in all fielding attributes and 90 overall and he was like a vacuum at third. He could make the deep throws, the dives, and everything in between. Mind you auto fielding and manual throwing.

I lost him at the end of the season to free agency. After all, I am the Indians, I don't pay my players lol. I replaced him in the 2028 season (only played a month as I am waiting on 21 on my PS5). I replaced him with an up and coming prospect who admittedly was a year away who had around 70 in all the fielding attributes but was dynamite at the plate.

Anyway, those plays that were routine for my old 3B all of a sudden weren't there for the new one. He couldn't make the deep throws from the corner, he wasn't as quick off of his first step on bunts, his range wasn't as great.

My point is that those better fielders stood out to me from my auto fielding, button manual throw fielding.

Obviously fielding is not perfect and needs to continue to grow but this is my 2 cents on the stand out infielders.

I use button throwing and manual fielding. I never seem to trigger the animations that auto fielding triggers or uses. I don't feel fielding is rewarding enough.

My favorite part of baseball is actually fielding and pitching. I think the Show has the best hitting/pitching interface and system of any baseball sim I have played.

I feel the fielding is too animation controlled which limits the ability of the user to branch into some of the more complex fielding.

I don't know the answer either, of how to improve it. New games need the animation system, I just know I want something a little different.

If that makes any sense .....

2 ideas I have somewhat along these lines:

            1. Specific animation "packages", if you will, for different types of fielders. This should add some variety to fielding so that we don't see every player making the same animations. I would break them up in to different throwing styles and fielding styles.

For throwing you can be a "Long Arm" (probably popular among outfielders and third basemen who have a longer arm path), "Short Arm" (probably popular for middle infielders with a quicker release), and an option for something in the middle. You could also add sidearm/three-quarters/over-the-top arm slots, to give you 9 different throwing styles.

For fielding you can be a "Flashy Defender" that have a variety of highlight real animations and can add some flair to routine plays (think Javy Baez/Tatis), "Fundamentally sound" who can be solid fielders that don't quite add the same flair to routine plays (perhaps Marcus Semien/Paul DeJong), as well as "Clumsy" (maybe not the right adjective) for players who somehow find a way to make the easy plays look hard (maybe Schwarber /Josh Bell). Ratings would not necessarily influence your animation packages, just the "success rate" of your fielding plays.

            2. "Precision Fielding". I sort of envision this sort of like NBA 2K and NHL where they give you more control over dekes/moves. I imagine using L2/LT as the "precision modifier" where holding/pressing it at the right moment will trigger specific animations. For example, perhaps holding L2 as your shortstop throws to 2B to start a double play will trigger a glove flip. Or if you hold L2 before you field a ball with your SS deep in the hole, he will start moving a bit slower to set up for a backhand and fire to 1B with his feet planted, whereas without using L2 he would go for a "Jeter" jump throw.

One sort of unrelated idea would be to breakup either fielding or reaction into 4 directional ratings (in/back/forehand/backhand). StatCast publishes directional Outs Above Average so there is data to use for those ratings as well
