Orioles struggle in first two series of new season

We shouldn't jump the gun but the first six home games of this season feel like last seasons home struggles have continued into the new season. The Orioles started the 2022 season with a solid victory against the Toronto Blue Jays when despite only totaling three hits, Baltimore managed a 4-2 victory.

Four straight losses would follow after that first win and for the most part, the offense struggled also following last years trends.

Baltimore was able to stop the four game losing streak and avoid the sweep by the Yankees. In that last game of the series, Carlos Correa hit two home runs and had a total of five RBIs while Rio Ruiz also added his second homer of the season which was good for two RBI's.

The team did suffer an injury during the Yankees series as Ryan Mountcastle suffered a shoulder strain and is looking to be out for two weeks. Ken Grubb has come off the bench to take his DH spot against right handed pitchers.

The Orioles will now go on the road to face the Blue Jays again in a three game series.

Cardinals drop Spring opener to Nationals

      Baseball is back!

The 2023 season officially started yesterday in Florida and Arizona for Spring Training.

The Cardinals opened the Spring with a 2-1 loss to the Nationals. The Cardinals lone run would come off the bat of Paul DeJong in his first AB and first pitch he saw of the Spring. Stephen Strasburg missed with a fastball right over the heart of the plate and DeJong belted it for his first homerun of the Spring.

Jack Flaherty was strong in his 2 innings of work allowing no runs, no hits and striking out 3. Bernando Flores would take the loss as he gave up 2 runs on 3 hits in his 2 innings of work.

The Cardinals would get a scare when Tommy Edman left in the 3rd after making a diving attempt and coming up holding his elbow, but it was just a contusion and he'll be back in a day or so.

Next up the Cardinals will play the Marlins.

Braves start the long 7 game homestand off with salvaging a win in a 3-game series vs. the Mets.

I was looking forward to our 1st series of the year vs the Mets. We had Soroka, Fried & I. Anderson going on the mound.

Unfortunately Game 1 & 2 both Soroka got shelled & rocked early. Both of my very good starters gave 5 earned runs. We lost 6-2 & 7-2!

Game 3 SP I. Anderson vs. Syndergard. Anderson became our stopper. Anderson went 8.2IP,5H,2ER,0BB,9K., plus an RBI single. CP W. Smith SV(15),also Freeman went 2 for 4 with RBI(2),2B(2). It was funny before the game it was suggested to give Freenan a day off. I gambled & won. He was productive & injury-free. We won 5-2!

We sit at 22-21 on the year, last place in the NL East, 2.5GB of the 1st place Nats(24-18). We are playing how the Braves IRL were earlier this year. Pirates are rolling in to town for 4-gsme set.
As you all can see Pitching is our strength...

The schedule makers have blessed the Cubs with 6 of their first 9 against the Buccos. Another offensive explosion sees the Cubs post 11 (their lucky number early on) runs and improve to 6-1.

Cardinals struggling through first 10 games of Spring

The 2023 Spring is off to a rocky start for the Cardinals who currently sit 2-8 through the first 10 games of Spring Training. While win/loss record is of little importance in Spring as teams work to get regulars at-bats/innings pitched and work over backups/prospects to fulfill depth charts, it is concerning to note that pitching has been a struggle thus far.

The Cardinals lost Max Scherzer and Kwang Hyun Kim from their rotation (funny story in regards to Kim upcoming), so they have relied on Dakota Hudson, Levi Prater, Caleb Smith (FA signing), Bernardo Flores, Carlos Martinez, and Jake Woodford to determine the backend of the rotation behind Jack Flaherty and Jake Odorizzi.

Dakota Hudson is the only one of the bunch that appears to be a lock when ST ends to be in the rotation. Carlos Martinez has been solid as has Bernardo Flores, but haven't quite hit that spot where they are locks. The others, have just struggled, although Prater did pitch 3 innings in his last outing allowing one run on one hit (solo HR) and striking out 4. Caleb Smith and Jake Woodford have been rocked in their limited innings. Smith has just 4 innings of work in 3 appearances because of ineffectiveness. Jake Woodford, at AA last year, just doesn't appear to be ready to face major league hitters on a regular basis.

So the Cardinals will spend the next few weeks trying to figure out the rotation. However, they just received a boost. In the offseason the Cardinals picked up John Brebbia in the Rule 5 draft from the Giants, but Brebbia has been poor this Spring, so the Cardinals released him and the Giants took him back. The Giants then dropped Kwang Hyun Kim from their 40 man roster to add Brebbia, so the Cardinals were able to claim Kim off of waivers. Crazy I know.

So Kim figures to be in the rotation when ST ends (He only pitched one inning for Giants this spring due to finger contusion) which will mean the Cardinals need to find one more starter amongst Smith, Prater, Martinez, and Woodford. If I were to guess at the moment, Martinez would get the nod.

The Cardinals have 14 more games this Spring to figure out the final starter(s) for the rotation as well as put together their bullpen which is in good shape, although the Cards may look to the FA market for another lefty as Tyler Webb and Genesis Cabrera have had their issues this spring.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Was this an every pitching/inning season?

One of the crazier games I've played. No-hit through seven innings, then I manage to tie it in the eighth. The Braves had bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the ninth but I somehow keep them from scoring. I take the lead in the top of the 11th and then I pick off Ozzie Albies to end the game in the bottom of the 11th to end the game with Freddie Freeman at the dish.

After taking a break after a lost Royals franchise, I am ready to begin. I am energized to begin the grind to take the Pittsburgh Pirates through a “play every pitch” franchise and see what happens.

Spring training has been completed and the opening day roster is as follows:

                                SP:
                                Bryse Wilson
                                Steven Brault
                                J.T. Brubaker
                                Mitch Keller
                                Chase De Jong

                                RP:
                                Trevor Cahill
                                Duane Underwood Jr
                                Kenyan Middleton
                                Anthony Banda
                                Sam Howard
                                Julian Merryweather
                                Jimmy Cordero
                                Chris Stratton

Catchers- Jacob Stallings and Michael Perez

INF- Colin Moran, Rodolfo Castro, Michel Chavis, Ke’Bryan Hayes, Wilmer Difo, Kevin Newman, Erik Gonzalez

OF- Jared Olivia, Bryan Reynolds, Gregory Polanco, Ben Gamel

The Pirates will open the season in Chicago to take on the cubbies for a three game set.
