Hate to break it to you but that's literally never been the case. Every decision is, and has always been motivated by profit. The difference between the additions in the past that seemed like they were "for the fans", and the additions that they make now that are "chasing money", is simply whether or not they appeal to you directly.

You won’t find many people on here who’d say SDS haven’t changed from let’s say, 10 years ago. Of course it’s always ULTIMATELY been about profit, but that’s not to say you can’t go the extra mile or even work flat out to make the game as good as it can be…the little things, right? Like they used to.

SDS have gone from priding themselves on going to the effort to add the little things, to flat out refusing to pay attention to the big things.

They’re no different than EA now whereas I used to sing SDS praises on the FIFA forums, saying THAT’S how you develop a game- attention to detail, plenty of interaction & communication etc. The fact there was a notable difference between studios in the first place compared to now demonstrates a clear shift.

What bothers me the most is the fact the show, madden, fifa etc. make more money than ever. So why not invest in more resource and shoot for the stars in terms of what the games can offer us?

The passion has definitely gone frown from the developers over the years. It’s unfortunate because you want the people making the game to really care and be proud of it. The SDS developers may care, but it’s certainly not about making the most realistic baseball game anymore.

Additionally the distant backgrounds, skylines, etc. are just so low resolution.

The grass looks really bad during gameplay. It looks like carpet. With the current graphics the game has there’s no reason this game shouldn’t be locked at 60fps on the ps5 and series x. Madden gave us 120fps on the series x at 1440p. It really is time this game starts looking next gen.

This is why I’m dying for MVP to make a return because it’ll force SDS to do better. The game has been feeling stale for years now. Same ole commentary and graphics. It’s time for this game to look next gen.

I would bet anything that when we all see the very first feature premiere stream for 22 which I assume will be about gameplay we are all going to be like WTF??? same darn graphics again!!!!!! O hey at least they have a cool new looking Scorebug Overlay lol

The only thing good coming out of that first stream will be the usual improved gameplay. And that would not be a totally bad thing as gameplay is the most important part of any sports game. And the gameplay is indeed the best of the best.

I so hope I am wrong and San Diego Studios will have some huge surprises for us in the graphical department for 22!!!!!!!

This statement pretty much covers like at least the last 10 years or more

Correct. If they would have inproved graphics the Next Gen features list surely would have said “Stunning Visuals” or something of the sort. You know San Diego Studios likes to Pat themselves on the back. Minor tweaks if anything. Same graphic engine years past.

if it was the old EA of 20 years ago, I'd say yeah, the competition would benefit the gamers, but if it's the same EA responsible for NBA Live 14-19, I don't think it would move the needle for the Show anymore than EA pushed NBA2K

Let’s be honest with ourselves, we’re going to buy the game anyway…
Speak for yourself. I'm not playing any games right now anyway until the summer, but I'll be getting my fix with SMB 3 or an old version of The Show if it doesn't improve where I'd like it to for my needs. I like to support, but I also like to vote with my wallet. I've skipped years, including last year's. This year need be no different.

No, I’m saying any game that includes a micro-transaction function won’t be touched basically, beyond token tweaks for marketing purposes.

I know UT and DD get more attention from studios but they’re basically the same thing with new bells and whistles each release.

If the bottom line is the studios only real focus, there’s no incentive for studios to put much effort into anything given the fact the money will come in via micro-transactions regardless.

I’ll never get my head around why people are prepared to pay 100’s/1000’s for a virtual team. Frankly they’ve ruined gaming for the rest of us!

Gameplay is the saving Grace of the show. Like NBA might have the best franchise but I can't get through playing more than 12 games in a season lol Meanwhile the show might be stale franchise wise but I can't play 162 games in a season and feel like every game is different.

Pretty much…of course whatever improvements are made, DD will get priority but there’s essentially no motivation for them to make anything other than superficial changes.

To be honest, there is no shame in having that approach. SDS is in their second year of going third party so iterative updates and optimizations are going to happen this year vs something huge.

Just from a developer standpoint and I'm just speculating as I'm not an SDS employee but, MLB's agreement with SDS in 2019 to make The Show a third party title likely put SDS in a position where internally they had to overhaul their entire development workflow to accommodate 5 systems (PS4/PS5/XBONE/Series/Switch) instead of the 2 (PS4/PS5) that they were used to as part of being a first party studio. That probably includes tools and scripts designed to work solely with Sony equipment, for all we know.

I mean at least to me, 2023 may be different now that there's going to be a focus on building out an ecosystem for the game that covers all of the existing systems. In that process we might even get a PC version, so who knows.
