Re: Will MLB The Show 22 look like a PS5 game?
Considering they haven’t had any competition the last 9 years, and the advancements of technology, why wouldn’t it be the best between the lines? That’s fine. But the lackluster graphics and presentation are still present. Why be complacent? Especially those of us on next gen.
Having grown up on 8-bit and 16-bit, graphics will always be the last thing on my list. Give me more features and improved game modes. You want free speech?

Re: Will MLB The Show 22 look like a PS5 game?
I’m one of those guys who got a PS5 late, so I played most (200+) of my games on PS4 then switched over for only 25 or so games on PS5 … difference is minimal. People rag on the seagulls in the outfield but I thought they were a nice touch. Otherwise the only difference is PS5 performs slightly better.Just one man’s opinion.
I don’t actually care about any of this.Comment

I don't find the visual improvements lackluster when I look at how the game has visually progressed over time. I also consider that the big tech advancements people really want aren't necessarily an overnight process, and SDS themselves did emphasize that the big overhaul in visuals was actually a full blown three year project for the studio in the MLB The Show 17 stream.
- MLB 17 to my knowledge was the first big visual overhaul since they specifically mentioned in the feature reveals for that launch that they had implemented newer lighting and shaders after ditching legacy PS3 code. This is essentially what you can consider to be the modern day version of MLB The Show that the team's been iterating on steadily with visuals from '18-'21.
For context, by the time MLB 17 dropped, there were 40M PS4 consoles out on the market, and SDS as a studio have consistently been focusing on just developing for one system between MLB 17 and 20.
Right now there are only 27M next gen consoles combined (PS5/XBOX Series) that have been sold, so we're likely getting performance bumps and feature optimizations for a while before the next big overhaul as long as they're still releasing these games on PS4/XBONE/NSX.
I would expect something big for The Show 24 when it comes to graphics if we're using the visual evolution from 14 to 17 as a reference. We haven't seen the developer streams yet leading up to this year's launch, so this is all me strictly speculating on past development and I may be wrong.Last edited by Kccitystar; 02-08-2022, 02:59 PM.Comment

If we're talking strictly visual improvements, right now, we are where we were in 2015 as far as our expectations with visual changes for The Show when they had cross-gen versions out on PS3 and PS4.

Re: Will MLB The Show 22 look like a PS5 game?
Playing the PS4 version of 21 on a ps5 was nearly identical to playing the ps5 version itself
I actually deleted the ps5 version because of the lack of SOTS and played the ps4 version all year

I lean towards needing 9 great innings of baseball more than needing next-gen graphics, which is why I can wait a while before plunking down for a ps5. only the stadium creator motivates me to want a ps5. that, and the possibility of college football returning to the video game world. but I don't fault anyone for expecting the Show to look a LOT better on the ps5 than the ps4. they can't ask you to buy in on the 9th generation and then give you 8th generation visual quality. that's just my opinion though *shrug*OSFM23 - Building Better Baseball - OSFM23

Re: Will MLB The Show 22 look like a PS5 game?
Thank you for this context. Maybe I’m unfairly comparing them to games like 2K and Madden who have much larger well established teams. And besides graphics I would like simple things like for the water to actually splash instead of the ball ricocheting off of it like a hard surface in 2022. To have to wait until 2024 would be absurd though. Unacceptable. They are growing as a company. The revenue is growing.
The product should reflect.
This is SDS' second year of being a third party studio, which is why I've got a little more patience with The Show 22 and beyond since they're obviously still trying to find their footing as a third party studio and the studio's more focused on retooling/optimizing the existing game so that it's functionally stable across all these new platforms they now have to support. That's why The Show 21 didn't really have any massive changes, and the next-gen features the studio did introduce for next-gen (the stadium editor, RTTS live videos) were things that the team felt they could safely introduce with limitations that wouldn't break the core game experience.
MLB basically had SDS go third party during the 2019-2020 offseason to bring their games to the XBOX platform and the Switch (effectively sunsetting the RBI series they've developed in-house), and if you're a first party studio that's solely been building games for one specific platform for so long, your studio probably has a ton of tools and documentation for that platform that need to be rebuilt/rewritten/optimized for the other platforms. You would also need to hire additional staff who are familiar with XBOX/Switch development and they would need to adjust to this new development workflow too. All of that stuff takes time to get to where SDS needs to be.
The fact that they were able to put out a mostly stable XBOX build of The Show 21 with performance matching the native Sony platforms in literally one full dev cycle and release the game ON TIME last year is pretty impressive.
I'm pretty firm in my belief that we'll see smaller quality-of-life updates for a while before we see something hugely noticeable like high-poly player models/stadiums. Probably optimization upgrades like a high performance 1080p/120fps mode before then.
Just trying to share some perspective.Comment

Re: Will MLB The Show 22 look like a PS5 game?
It’s nearly identical outside of resolution/frames because it’s a cross gen, cross play game. SoTS OR 3D Audio and haptic feedback. Personally I prefer the resolution and frame increase of the PS5. As I’ve previously stated, the game would be well served with more realistic looking grass and dirt, and more realistic looking cloth for uniforms.Comment

My biggest concern with this series though will always be framerate during gameplay. The last thing I want is to return to the PS4 era of inconsistent frame rates while batting.Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.Comment
