If you're name is Zac(H) the Cardinals are interested in your services as a starting pitcher. The Cardinals landed two huge signings in the matter of days signing each to a 3 year deal.
Zac Gallen was signed to a 3 year/$52.5M deal with a player option for the final year. Gallen was a big target for the Cards at the deadline last year, but the D'Backs wouldn't move off of Jordan Walker who the Cardinals refused to trade away. So now they signed the 30 year old away from the Diamondbacks, who got Gallen in the Goldschmidt trade years ago.
Gallen was 10-11 last year in 33 starts but pitched 198.1 innings with 193 strikeouts. His ERA was 3.77 and his WHIP was 1.18. He also made 18 quality starts.
Zach Plesac signed a 3 year/$34.5MM deal also with a player option on the final year. Plesac comes from the Guardians where he was 13-9 last year in 200.1 IP. His ERA was 3.37 and a WHIP of 1.03. Last year marked the 3rd time in 4 years that Plesac went over 200 innings of work. That type of workhorse mentality will help keep the bullpen fresh as he joins Jack Flaherty and Gallen as guys who get deep into games, and even Reid Detmers who showed strong resillance last year, despite not having the best defensive or offensive support in his starts last year.
Big time gets for the Cards, along with adding Matt Barnes in the bullpen. Ryan Helsley re-signed as well and they are in on a few more bullpen arms as they look to address their biggest weakness from a team that won 104 games last year.
Now they will need to address the infield as the only known lock is Nolan Gorman at either 1st base or 3rd base, depending on how things play out this winter. Nolan Arenado hasn't yet re-signed and the club is skeptical to bring back Tommy Edman after he struggled all of 2025 hitting under .200.
