Cardinals bolster pitching staff adding Zac Gallen and Zach Plesac

If you're name is Zac(H) the Cardinals are interested in your services as a starting pitcher. The Cardinals landed two huge signings in the matter of days signing each to a 3 year deal.

Zac Gallen was signed to a 3 year/$52.5M deal with a player option for the final year. Gallen was a big target for the Cards at the deadline last year, but the D'Backs wouldn't move off of Jordan Walker who the Cardinals refused to trade away. So now they signed the 30 year old away from the Diamondbacks, who got Gallen in the Goldschmidt trade years ago.

Gallen was 10-11 last year in 33 starts but pitched 198.1 innings with 193 strikeouts. His ERA was 3.77 and his WHIP was 1.18. He also made 18 quality starts.

Zach Plesac signed a 3 year/$34.5MM deal also with a player option on the final year. Plesac comes from the Guardians where he was 13-9 last year in 200.1 IP. His ERA was 3.37 and a WHIP of 1.03. Last year marked the 3rd time in 4 years that Plesac went over 200 innings of work. That type of workhorse mentality will help keep the bullpen fresh as he joins Jack Flaherty and Gallen as guys who get deep into games, and even Reid Detmers who showed strong resillance last year, despite not having the best defensive or offensive support in his starts last year.

Big time gets for the Cards, along with adding Matt Barnes in the bullpen. Ryan Helsley re-signed as well and they are in on a few more bullpen arms as they look to address their biggest weakness from a team that won 104 games last year.

Now they will need to address the infield as the only known lock is Nolan Gorman at either 1st base or 3rd base, depending on how things play out this winter. Nolan Arenado hasn't yet re-signed and the club is skeptical to bring back Tommy Edman after he struggled all of 2025 hitting under .200.

      Sept 30 - Oct 2: FLAGSTAFF (85-77) @ COLORADO SPRINGS (89-73)
Stadium: Security Service Field (Capacity: 13,587)

      September 30: Snow Sox 5, Hops 4
      October 1: Snow Sox 7, Hops 2
      October 2: Hops 2, Snow Sox 1

Colorado Springs, CO (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops closed out the 2022 regular season by dropping two of three at Colorado Springs as they missed out on the playoffs in their initial season in the Intermountain Baseball League.

In the opener, the Colorado Springs Snow Sox pulled out a 5-4 victory to clinch the Mountain League West and eliminate Flagstaff from the playoff chase.

Colorado Springs would grab a 3-0 lead in the third on a Watts three-run home run to left off of Angelo Chacin.

The Hops would finally break through in the fifth. Art Mason hit a laser into left center for a leadoff double. Donnie Roland hit a bloop single to center that scored Mason and then Rodney Millar hit an opposite field home run, his 45th on the season, to tie the game at 3-3.

It would last that way into the seventh. Jason Watts lined a one-out double and advanced to third on a Cox single. Oliver Benedict came on to face Donnell Marcus. But the lefty lined a two-run double to right center to put the Snow Sox up 5-3.

The Hops would show some life in the ninth though. Art Mason hit a one-out solo home run to right, his 25th on the year to cut it to 5-4. Leandro Lugo singled to center. But Donnie Roland grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game and snuff out the Hops playoff chances.

On Saturday evening the Snow Sox defeated the Hops 7-2 behind another strong game from Jason Watts. Watts went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs to help lead the Snow Sox to the win.

Gonzalez got the Snow Sox off to the early lead with a solo home run to left in the third. They would extend that lead to 2-0 in the fourth with an Austin RBI double.

Jason Watts would extend the lead to 4-0 in the sixth with a two-run double. He would score on a Pat Shields RBI single. A Mike Rock solo home run in the seventh extended the lead to 6-0.

Flagstaff would get on the scoreboard in the eighth on a Skyler Lyons solo home run to left. Isaac Nettles would add a solo home run in the ninth.

Jon Reyes (13-6) picked up the win for the Snow Sox. He went 7 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out four and walked four. Shoe-Lace O’Tying (11-9) picked up the loss and left the game in the fifth after he was hit in the back with a line drive.

In the finale, Leandro Lugo’s two-run home run in the seventh was the difference as Flagstaff closed out the season with a 2-1 victory over the ML West Champion Snow Sox.

This was a pitcher’s duel with Ryan Pressley getting the best of Mike Stoneridge. Pressley (13-11) pitched eight innings, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Stoneridge (14-10) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing two run son nine hits. He struck out six and walked one.

James Dudeck hit his 18th home run on the season to put Colorado Springs ahead in the fifth.

Arturo Mardones laced a one-out double to left in the seventh. Mike Stonebridge would strike out Grant Mitchell, but Leandro Lugo hit a hanging curveball deep to left to put the Hops up 2-1. It was Lugo’s 19th on the season and tenth since joining the Hops.

The Hops finished the season (85-77), staying in the playoff picture until the final weekend after a slow start. The Snow Sox (89-73) will face the ML Central winner in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Roswell and Santa Fe will play in a one game playoff on Monday to determine the division champ with the loser hosting Fort Worth in the Wild Card.

Around the League: Fort Worth defeated West Texas 7-4 to clinch the a Wild Card spot in the Mountain League. San Antonio clinched the ML East with a 5-3 victory over Austin. The Javelinas scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to clinch the win and division title.

Surprise defeated Goodyear 4-2 and Phoenix lost to St. George 5-2. That leaves the Saguaros just one win away from a DL Central title.

Both Roswell and Santa Fe lost leaving both of those teams tied atop the ML Central with two games left in the season. Both teams have already clinched playoff berths.

Long Beach defeated Las Vegas 6-2 on Friday evening to tie the Nuggets atop the DL West. On Saturday, the Nuggets walked it off on a Freddie Hewitt home run in the bottom of the tenth. The Nuggets hit five solo home runs in the win, as they moved one game ahead of Long Beach with one game left.

Surprise scored six times in the top of the eighth to defeat Goodyear 10-5 and clinch the Desert League Central division. Ken Hollinger hit two home runs to lead the way for the Saguaros. He is now up to 30 home runs on the season.

Both Roswell and Santa Fe lost on the final day of the regular season to setup a on game playoff for the ML Central crown. Santa Fe blew a 1-0 lead in the ninth as El Paso pushed across one in the bottom of the ninth and then won it with a sacrifice fly in the 11th. Roswell gave up seven runs in the eighth and two in the ninth in a 12-3 loss to Albuquerque.

Herb Clark blasted a three-run home run in the fifth to help pace Las Vegas to a 4-3 victory over Long Beach to clinch the DL West. Long Beach will play in the DL Wild Card against Phoenix.

Cardinals and Nolan Arenado agree to one year deal

The Cardinals have agreed to a one year $11.5M deal with Nolan Arenado. The Cardinals declined his team option of $32.5MM earlier this offseason. It was unsure if that would sour the relationship to which Arenado would seek a new home, but his market never really materialized, so he's back home in St.Louis.

The Cardinals still have work to do this winter as they look to build depth amongst the organization

Re: MLB The Show 22 Franchise Discussion Thread

I decided to keep on going with my Jays fantasy draft franchise. After a tough 3-peat on to Year 4. Approaching the trade deadline, we are sitting in 1st again. We let Aaron Nola and Pete Alonso walk in free agency as they were going to cost too much and I have 3 SP's in my farm that I drafted in Year 1 that are looking ready for prime time: Danny Bryant (24), Bo Cohen (24) , Jess Walker (22). Danny was pulled up to the majors this season and almost made it to the All Star he has been great he's currently sitting at 80 OVR. I have Luis Severino (93 OVR) on contract year he's back to back Cy-Young but I think I'm going to trade him for a youth package because it's time to get the ball rolling on Bo Cohen (81 OVR).

On the offensive side, Bo Bichette got paid, it's his contract year and he has been a monster for me. He was rewarded a 5 year deal with AAV of 27.6/yr. Well deserved. Now comes the hard part. Ke'Bryan Hayes and Luis Urias both at contract year, 92 and 88 OVR respectively both want 5 year deals with AAV of 22.1/yr. I want to keep both but this is going to be one of my hardest contract extension seasons ever because I also have Jarod Walsh whose contract is expiring as well as Tim Anderson both want around 11-14 AAV. These guys have all been critical to my offense so I've got to make my mind up on what to do.

          Currently fielding:

          - 1B Walsh
          - 2B Bichette
          - SS Anderson
          - 3B Hayes
          - LF Gourriel
          - CF Julio Rodriguez
          - RF Mookie
          - C Tyler Stephenson
          - DH Giancarlo Stanton

Bench: Luis Urias, Xander Bogaerts, Austin Nola, Oscar Mercado. I think I'm forgetting someone else too.

          Pitching:

          - Luis Severino
          - Luis Castillo,
          - Shane Baez,
          - Spencer Turnbull
          - Danny Bryant (Rookie)

I think I'm going to trade Xander so his 2 years remaining on 20 AAV can come off which will give me room to resign some of my big expiring contracts. I have some guys in my farm system in SS/2B I want to bring up.

I can't wait to see how this unfolds, defending the 3-peat but also finally bringing in my youth.

Well, things aren't looking any better for the Nationals . They won one of four against the Marlins, before going to Philly and being swept in three games there. The Philly series was especially rough, as the Phils pulled off back to back walkoffs in extra innings in the second and third games.

Brady House was banged up in game four of the Marlins series and didn't make the trip to Philly, but is expected back any day now. Joey Meneses, who was just finding his groove after missing most of the season, will now miss 1-2 weeks with a Finger Contusion. Yadiel Hernandez will be recalled from AAA to replace Meneses. The only positives that come to mind are C.J. Abrams and James Woods are both swinging a hot bat, and Anderson Tejeda has been more consistent and showing some plate discipline.

The brutality continues, as the 30-59 Nationals will fly to Atlanta for three before coming home to face Seattle for two games and Atlanta for three more to lead into the All Star Break.

Cardinals re-sign Gio Urshela to one year deal

The Cardinals have brought back Gio Urshela on a one year $4M deal. Urshela whom the Cardinals acquired from the Twins back in 2022 continues to get one year extensions from the Cardinals as he continues to be a vital part of their offense. Urshela hit just .253 last year with 12 homeruns and 65 RBI's, but he was basically 0 for September as he went into a dramatic slump. But in the NLDS, Urshela hit nearly .400 in the 5 game span.

Urshela now gives the Cardinals an anchor at SS or 2B, or even first base should they decide not to put Nolan Gorman there. This also gives them depth should they look outside the organization for SS or 2B help. And this could mean that the team is indeed moving on from Tommy Edman who had a horrid 2025 season and has steadily declined in production over the past 3 seasons.

Urshela made an amazing defensive play against me last night that killed my rally, it was unreal lol.

                  Alex Reyes signs with Tigers

Alex Reyes has accepted the Tigers offer of 6 years $60.8M dollars thus ending his tenure in St.Louis. The Cardinals made Reyes an offer of 5 years $46.2M, and thought they were in line to re-sign the 31 year old, but he ended up turning it down. Most believe its due to Reyes wanting to be the closer on a ballclub, and the Cardinals are set in that spot with Giovanny Gallegos.

The Cardinals will now turn their attention to other arms on their radar as they look to build depth in their bullpen.

ML CENTRAL PLAYOFF: SANTA FE (91-72) @ ROSWELL (90-73)
Stadium: Greater New Mexico Field (Capacity: 10,713)

                    October 3: Santa Fe 10, Roswell 5

Roswell, NM (AP) - The Santa Fe Silver Bullets clinched the Mountain League Central on Monday evening with a 10-5 victory over the Roswell Aliens in a one game playoff at Greater New Mexico Field. Jared Hughes pitched eight solid innings, allowing three runs on four hits to help the Silver Bullets to the title.

This one started out looking like it may be a slugfest as Santa Fe jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the third inning. But the Aliens would not get another base runner until the ninth inning.

Santa Fe (91-72) hit three home runs with Corey Barton (19) leading the way, going 2 for 6 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. D’Marcus Peterson (16) and Joel Valdez (9) also homered for the Silver Bullets.

Adam Hendricks (9-11) was shelled in this one. He lasted just two plus innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) on nine hits. In all, the Aliens allowed fifteen hits and also walked three.

Santa Fe advances to the divisional round where they will take on Colorado Springs. Roswell will now host Fort Worth in the Mountain League Wild Card game.

Didn't really like Hilliard, so uh ... Quinn failed his physical and Hilliard has been returned to the Rockies. Hilliard struck out in his only at-bat for the Braves; Quinn never played for the Rockies.

So I'm in a little bit of a mess. I need some help understanding payrolls/budget. I won't be able to resign Severino, Luis Urias or Jarod Walsh. I can maybe resign Walsh since what he wants is within the max I can offer which is like $14.8M. When I trade Severino for example, why is the max I can offer for current eligble contract extension players getting lower? Like even If I trade Severino for young guys whose salaries are like 80K-2M the max I can offer for extension goes from like $14.8M to $6-8M??
