PS4 vs PS5 version of MLB The Show 22

Would love to gage everyone’s thoughts about the PS4 vs PS5 version of the game this year. Being a massive SOTS fan, and spending hours creating the sounds that make each park unique, I’m curious as to if this passionate crowd on OS has a grip on if the PS5 version of MLBTS22 is THAT much better than the PS4 version? (I am playing on my PS5 console, to note)

Last year the gap between the two wasn’t huge, in terms of graphics, even though I know this year there’s definitely an upgrade in smoothness and clarity for the next gen version.

Haptic feedback would usually be a draw for me but I do not use vibration (for an enhanced classic pitching difficulty and challenge) … unfortunately you cannot turn off Hitting vs Pitching vibration unfortunately … but in this case, Haptics aren’t a big pull for me.

Now, I know this is purely contextual and it all depends on what each person looks for in the game and what makes them tick, but if the jump to the PS5 version is THAT much better in your opinions, I’m really considering making the move.

SOTS is the one thing that makes this game so special to me because it’s something that I would die for all other sports games to have, to create the incredible atmosphere that so many sports venues have and truly make them feel different.

Hope you all are well and I would truly love and appreciate some of your informed opinions.

Re: PS4 vs PS5 version of MLB The Show 22

I was lucky enough to snag the MVP edition PS4/PS5 the Monday before early access. With that I could only play the PS4 version due to the servers not being up and able to download the PS5 version.

So with that, I've played nearly the same number games on the PS4 vs the PS5.

Without a shadow of a doubt, in my mind at least, the PS5 version plays a lot better game than the PS4. And I truly miss SotS, but I'd rather have the better gameplay over the course of 162 game season. It doesn't seem as though the difference would be that drastic, especially playing the PS4 version on the PS5 console, but in my experience it is.

Whether its worth giving up SotS for is up to each individual. Personally, while I used SotS, I didn't get as deep into it as others.

But on field the PS5 version plays better, significantly, than the PS4 counterpart.

I'm going to go opposite of CountryBoy here and say the PS4 version is better. SOTS is a really big deal to me, so I value the sounds more than the enhanced clarity on the PS5 version. Another valuable part of the PS4 version is being able to turn HDR off. I play on a Samsung Q70 tv, and HDR on The Show looks washed out to me. So being able to turn that off provides a better graphical experience FOR ME. In '21 the texture streaming bug that caused flickering textures on cleats and compression sleeves was so distracting that it kept me from playing the PS4 version. I am pleased to report that this has been resolved for '22, which allows me to play the PS4 version and have SOTS for my franchise. Hope this helps.

I am a huge SOTS fan and get really deep into it. On MLB 20 have all kinds of themes (70,s 80’s, 90’s themes and walk ups, legend walk up’s, Star Wars Night files the works).

With that all being said....and as much as I love SOTS I have to echo Countryboy's post.

The PS5 version of this game is “the” version to play if you are looking for the absolute best playing baseball game to date ever. It’s that much better IMO.

And as a side note.....I think SDS did a tremendous job with the generic walk up music, pitcher walk up’s and between innings music for both the National and Regional themes. It feels like a real broadcast.

Its a more smooth, fluid game experience. The hitting feels more in tune as I think its easier to recognize pitches. Fielding is "easier" because the transition from batted ball to me taking over the fielder is more fluid. Pitching with the meter is a better experience.

Its hard to say exactly how its better, but having played over 30 games of both, its easily noticeable.

This is awesome feedback guys I really appreciate you all taking the time to put in your opinions! Especially Armor and CountryBoy as I always admire your takes and thoughts

I’m still taking my time to decide, I just have such an attachment to SOTS, just like KTB. It’s something that makes me FEEL like I’m there and get excited hearing home run music and my team’s win song after a hard fought game, being able to experience the atmosphere, among other realistic things like you all already know.

The crowd and their cheers/reactions are much, much better on the PS5 version, no doubt about that. It’s so strange because in the PS4 version, the crowd will cheer like a HR was hit right as an infielder scoops an easy grounder into their glove, before the throw is even made (which really breaks immersion). The crowd is much more well balanced in the next gen version.

Good thing is, I’m waiting to start my franchise for the RidinRosters release so that should give me more time to make the important decision before playing every pitch and every bat for 162

My last thought on this post … and would love your thoughts … I know the main reason SOTS is absent from Next Gen is because of feature parity with Xbox (and the inability to upload mp3s on Xbox), but do you guys think it’ll ever be added back for the next gen version?

Personally I don't think SOTS gets added to PS5 or Xbox. However, as they've done with the walk up batter music, I think SDS works to continue to add in music, crowd noise, ambience of the ballpark, etc...to the game as a "replacement" of sort.

I don't think it will ever get to the depths of SOTS but I believe that is the direction we will see for PS5/Xbox.

I love the victory songs. Especially playing in Wrigley Field with Go Cubs Go and Yankees Stadium with New York New York. But in 21, they really cut short the time the victory song plays. I could be wrong, but in 20, it seemed like they would play more of the song before going to the menu music.

You’re exactly right! This is a big gripe of mine, by the time the 3rd out is achieved in the 9th, there’s literally only 20 seconds (maybe 25 seconds) of your win song. Love your idea about it continuing all the way to the menu when you exit the game to allow “Go Cubs Go” to really sink it. Man, that would be special

Plus, any sort of walk off home run or win does not play the win song either! As a SOTS nut, these are the immersion things I truly wish we had, but I know that not every wish can be granted and I’m even more self-aware that I’m in the serve minority of what features are wanted/want to be improved.

I’m really at a crossroads here Bryan … keep going with my passion for SOTS for 22 (and essentially enjoy it as long as they keep producing versions for PS4 to play on my PS5 console) or make the heartbreaking decision now to leave them behind in favor of a better looking and more fluid game. ***There’s nothing quite like hitting a tank out of Wrigley, only to hear “Whomp There It Is” playing as Seiya Suzuki (or whoever it is) jogs around the bases … these are the small (but, huge in my mind) things that I’ll miss most

I stuck with the PS4 version on PS5 in MLB 2021 and would do the same in 2022. But since I haven't seen any 2022 SOTS packs being made, I might make the switch to full PS5.

I wont start my franchise until ridinrosters is released so until then, I'll just go back and forth between the two versions before making my decision.

You'd think with the amount of hours I have involved with SOTS in the past I'd say PS4 but I'm pretty sensitive to framerate and the game play is so smooth on PS5 that I gotta play it on that.

I definitely miss SOTS dearly though.

A guy by name of Arizito Sports will be making SOTS packs for 22, as he did for much of 21, it’ll just take time to get the packs out. In the meantime, I was planning on just using some sounds from the 21 packs and updating my team’s walk up music.

Like you, I’m also waiting for RidinRosters before starting my chise.

Really interested in which game you end up going with, Incognito. Would really love any feedback too as I’m in a serious pickle between the two versions.

Stop it, Matty! You’re making me emotional. I’ve put in so many hours and now I’m really starting to think of just leaving SOTS behind but this is like the toughest choice I’ve had to make in gaming, in years.
