Re: The Impact of Derek Jeter in The Show
Derek Jeter, by analytical ratings, may be the worst shortstop (regular playing time) of all time.
According to FanGraphs, his TZ (Total Zone Rating) is listed as 104 out of 104 at a -71 rating over his entire career.
From 2002 (start of the advanced rating category on FanGraphs) through 2014, his UZR was dead last amongst qualified shortstops at -66.1. If we remove 2013 and 2014 to still account for All Star years and remove his last two seasons, he was still dead last at -58 UZR.
Using the same time frame, his Range Rating was last amongst qualified SS at -89.3.
Where Jeter ranks well, is with Fielding percentage. He comes in at #27 on the list of qualified shortstops at .976.
So, he made plays when he could get to the ball, the problem is that he range and ability to get to the ball was poor.
Worst SS of all time? Not with the bat. With the glove? There is a good argument. Definitely the worst regular playing time SS of his era.
Jeter is a legend because of his Bat (OPS+ of 115), 3000+ hits, great playoff performances and being the Captain of some great NY teams.
I love Jeter. I am glad that he is in the game. However, if Jeter’s career started in 2014, he would have been moved to 2B.Comment

Re: The Impact of Derek Jeter in The Show
I love the "Derek Jeter was actually a bad defender" argument as much as the next guy (mostly just to stir the pot), but I wouldn't put too much stock into defensive metrics from the mid-early 2000's. Without some of the player/ball tracking they have now with statcast, some of those metrics don't really say a ton more than fielding percentage. That isn't to say they are completely useless, I'd just be hesitant to say a guy was the worst of all time based on metrics that really weren't even relevant for most of his careerChicago Cubs

Sure and that is a fair argument. I think that most people remember the highlights and that clouds their vision.Comment

Re: The Impact of Derek Jeter in The Show
all I know about Jeters defense is he never hurt the Yankeed by being their everyday SS. I orginally fell on the side of cover guys making minimum impact, but where somebody like Jeter (or Mariano Rivera) could make an impact is in NYC, a city of 8 million peopleOSFM23 - Building Better Baseball - OSFM23

Re: The Impact of Derek Jeter in The Show
I mean does any of it really matter? Is Jeter going to send any of us a check for defending him?
Its all just chatter. I would rather see Jeter on the cover then Josh Donaldson.Mets Baseball, All Day Every Day

but if he had been in a Braves uni instead of anywhere else, I would have been okay with a War Eagler on the cover
