Re: MLB The Show 23 Feature Premiere Schedule

People always talk here about Y2Y saves as if it is one issue. It is actually three, namely:
    Y2Y saves for franchise;
    Y2Y saves for RTTS; and
    Y2Y saves for rosters.

Should changes to franchise and RTTS necessarily foreclose Y2Y roster saves? I do not know.

In an ideal sport gaming world sport games should go to a 2 yearly release cycle with a big 1 yearly update for roster-player updates and of course updates through the year 2 years with smaller gameplay improvements.

But this is financially probably not a good business model because SDS would basically miss roughly a million games sold.

So what else is there to do…maybe a subscription model where they just continually keep working on the game…?

in an ideal world, there would be two separate development teams per sports "Studio":
one team works on even numbered years release, so has two years to deliver finished product.
a second team works on odd numbered years release and also has two years to deliver finished product

Yeah I guess thats right...the schedule still doesn't "rotate" per se...and they were able to change the schedule to be accurate for the first season of franchise each year. They just couldn't write code to recreate a new schedule each year within franchise.

I was speaking purely in regards to franchise mode.

For the schedule, it has had a rotating 5 year schedule for a long time now. It wasn't interleague rotation but the schedule is the same on years 1,6,11 and 2,7,12, and 3, 8, 13 etc.

I am sure it will be the same this year. Just with a new schedule format but be on its 5 year rotation again.

Curious what Thursday will bring on the commentary and presentation front (which is the core of the franchise experience). SDS did a great job with things last year; adding in the single biggest improvement ever made to a franchise experience in a single dev cycle. I don't expect anything quite as earth-shattering this year; but continued refinement in this area would be excellent.

Don't really have any needs/wants on the menu screen stuff; I just don't want them to add anything new to the mode UNLESS the AI-controlled teams are given the exact same capability.

it took me 3 years but in the last couple months I have finally become comfortable with the menu they rolled out starting with 20 and continuing into 21 and 22, so if they do change it, theres a good chance I wont like it. so it wont hurt my feelings if they give the current menu at least another year

While I agree...I meant more the franchise elements that happen outside of games and not just the screens themselves.

I am curious what makes you think presentation and commentary are the core of the franchise experience? Isn't the actual mode itself the core? Running a franchise?

You could play franchise with commentary off (Which I usually do a couple months in because of how stale it becomes) and the franchise mode is still there. I know good commentary and presentation can elevate an experience. The ticker is an AWESOME addition that I love. Id hardly call it the "Core" of the mode though.

From a logic perspective I surely hope they fix CPU bullpen management. The CPU hardly ever uses any RP outside of the one that is slotted into the Long reliever role. They will often have double or triple the amount of innings compared to any other RP, even if they are way worse of a pitcher.

I don't think it will be like that at all.

Every team plays every team now. Every team is on the schedule. All SDS has to do is flip who the home team is and its done. This is much easier than what they had to accomplish in the past, which was an actual rotating schedule of what interleague division you would play.

The Cubs play the Rangers at home on April 7-9. I am assuming the 2024 schedule will have the Cubs playing the rangers on the same date, but just on the road.

It was 5 templates. So every 5 years a template would repeat itself. I think they make 5 templates (4 plus the real 2023 schedule) and rotate them. If they could not get interleague rotating in, I don't think they do home one year and away the next.

Plus the 5 year rotating template scheduling setup is already in their code.

I'm guessing it will be the same 5 year rotation as it has been. It would be pretty lazy to have the exact same schedule every single season. Plus, if you keep the dates exactly the same every year then you run into having off days on Saturdays and Sundays, and all kinds of other weird stuff.

You are kind of correct. All “templates” are just the current season’s schedule. At the end of every season the teams rotate alphabetically within division. So in season 2 you have the exact same home dates & times as the division team next to yours in the alphabet.

Because MLB has 5 team divisions, this causes a repeat every 5 years, but that code is also used to generate the future AA & AAA schedules, where they have 4-7 team divisions that rotate the same way.

This code has been the same since we had a 4 team AL West & a 6 team NL Central. For those reasons it was never a 100% repeat back then.
