Re: MLB The Show 23 Impressions (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5)
I just started Road to Show yesterday. When constructing my players looks and gear, he's unable to wear batting gloves. I will switch it to two batting gloves, and when I accept the changes, the batting gloves come off. I am unable to hit with gloves. Has anybody else experienced this?Comment

If using pinpoint pitching, I find it exactly the same. The AI does seem to recognize pitch patterns better though.I haven't had hardly any time with the game yet. Last year I lowered my pitcher control a notch because I would get to the 6th inning and only have 35 pitches thrown. In your opinion is that still warranted, or do you get realistic pitch count numbers on default? I play on all star.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Impressions (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5)
played one game last night. Cle (me) at Min (cpu). Play Now.
I lost 8-1.
Used my sliders from 22
Pitching is harder this year (Legend)
I couldn't hit for power. Clearly timing is also improved. I gave up 13 hits and think I got 6.
Concerning to me: I had 5 double plays. This is also with fielding speed turned down to 0.
It's a fun game. I'm a classic roster guy so 20 is my go-to game.STEELERS INDIANS CELTICS

Re: MLB The Show 23 Impressions (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5)
Ended up deciding to get the game and played for a bit yesterday. I bought the PS5 standard disc version.
My initial thoughts:
-The game plays quite well. Only played 2 games but much better vibe than I got from the tech test.
-I am ok with the new menus. I know this is a polarizing topic this year but there is nothing wrong with the new menus to me. Everything is still there. Just in a different order.
-I do not use the API as I like to call my own games so that doesn't bother or impact me. The API has never really called good games in my opinion so I have had this feature off since 19.
-I play classic/directional with auto fielding and manual button throwing with the meter turned off. I wish the blue circle wouldn't be there but can manage.
-Spent most of my time editing the rosters to my preferences with potential. I did not pay much attention to ratings of players, but the roster seems to be very near ready. I GM sim 10 years into the future then play so Tatis not being in is not an issue for me.
-I will still be playing 20 for my RTTS shortstop as I do not like what has been done to RTTS since then. But 23 will definitely be my franchise game.
Going to spend most of my first week or two running a sim test franchise with Colorado to test out the need for draft class edits, trade slider, draft class generation, and the new scouting/draft system.
I will also play some DD early, mostly moments, as that is what I usually do as well to earn some stubs for sponsorships for franchise.Funkycorm

Re: MLB The Show 23 Impressions (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5)
I played 3 games last night. My experience was positive. The game feels really good to me.
Quick thoughts:
1) I need to figure out the new throwing meter. After hardly ever having errors in past versions, I had 6 in a game last night. 5 of them were off my bad throws. This used to be automatic but definitely not for me right now.
2) The batting/pitching interactions feel great (they usually do which to me is the best part of the game but seems even more polished).
3) After a couple games on 23. I decided to play MLB 20 and use a classic 1988 roster. Graphically, I could tell zero difference using MLB20 on my PS5 vs MLB23 on my PS5 (actually the game on MLB20 looked better but I think that was just because that was a bright sunny day in Philly vs a dreary day at Wrigley). This isn't to say graphics are bad as I think other than grass, everything looks good. But I notice zero upgrade here from MLB20, MLB21. MLB22, or MLB 23 on PS5.
4) I hope they fix quick counts to how it was in past versions. Pitch counts are now sky high in MLB23.
So overall, if you just look at MLB23 for the game it is, I think it is very good.
If you compare it to MLB20 it is still great but I couldn't honestly say there is a significant difference. Subtle changes that I think make it feel better but I don't think anything significant.
And to me that is my biggest complaint. I understand baseball is baseball but this game has really been stuck in neutral. Adding the Negro league stuff is a cool feature but it is in a mode that doesn't really interest me personally. I gave it a quick look and was really drawn in by the narration which is fantastic but I wasn't into having to do the tasks (i.e. strike out 4 batters with Satchel Paige). Franchise is essentially the same other than scouting tweaks (which I haven't explored as of now and have always used auto scouts).
I feel this franchise has been in neutral even more than Madden, NHL. PGA. NBA is the gold standard for what can be done (multple broadcast crews, real arena PA voices, ERAs mode, etc).. There are so many modes and options in that game! But even Madden has tried things with XFaxtors, momentum, tackle meters, free form passing, graphics changes, scouting changes, player role tags . NHL has added xfactor, custom leagues and options. PGA2K added a lot around golfer skill trees.
MLB The Show has added.......a tweaked throwing meter, new scouting and a Negro League Moments type mode. At the same time they eliminated year to year saves and sounds of the show.
That being said, what MLB does do it does extremely well. It is probably the best replica of the sport of all the video games. It is fun to play if you like baseball. It just isn't significantly more fun than in 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, etc.
NBA 2K showed with their ERAS mode that there are creative things that can be done to enhance the game. MLB The Show needs to take a similar step in my opinion otherwise this game just becomes a tweaked version with updated rosters. Give us multiple broadcast crews. Give us an ERAs mode. Give us league customization modes. Or maybe it is something else outside of what has been done in other sports games. I feel more should be done. I'm sure the games creators work hard and there is a ton of behind the scene stuff they are doing but on the surface it is hard to see when I can plop a version in from 3-9 years ago and not notice huge differences.
Negativity aside. MLB 23 feels good so far and I will enjoy itComment

Re: MLB The Show 23 Impressions (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5)
I’m also having an issue with throwing meter seemingly reverting to last year’s meter where it never moves and has a really large green window. I’ve tried turning fielding aids on and off and can’t get it back to what it’s suppose to be.Comment

I don’t think I’m getting the new throw meter. It seems static like before instead of dynamically changing.
Edit: NVM I had fielding aids turned on.Last edited by bkrich83; 03-29-2023, 01:00 PM.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 23 Impressions (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5)
I’ve normally been pretty negative (or at least frustrated) with this game since the first PS4 game and I’ll probably continue to do so; but while there’s a lot of things I wish they’d finally get around to improving, I gotta say this does play a good game of baseball. Not really sure what they’ve done but hitting is just extremely enjoyable. It’s like you can feel you popped up 1 millisecond after contact before the screen shows it. I think it’s pretty impressive that they’ve fine tuned in to a point that I can feel certain things just through tv vision.
Yes franchise is still lacking, terrain and player models are outdated, and the focus around DD is frustrating. But this is the first iteration in years to make me forget about being fed up with certain issues and just appreciate playing baseball.Comment
