Re: MLB The Show 23 Impressions (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5)

Really enjoying this year of the show. I'm still on ps4 but overall I'm finding the gameplay more satisfying and just fun to play. I wouldn't say I'm hardcore(define hardcore really) sports gamer where I play every mode but I've been playing these games for a long time in my 40's now and I have always been a good player. In the past once you find the sweet spots in these games it gets pretty easy and predictable. I'm seeing more hit variety and fielding is more fun too. The new commentary and presentation I'm enjoying as well.

One bitpick I have is I don't like the new API system. You can turn it on so you get the catcher calling pitches but you can barely see the glove. I basically just play exibition and franchise and like to make it as realistic as possible with the catcher giving suggestions.

Graphically this game is really fine to me. It's not groundbreaking and none of these sports games are anymore. But as far as a solid experience all these sports games hit that mark the last few years. Madden can still be just glitchy and has some gamebreaking stuff. 2k also breaks their games. But the show is usually solid although it's become predictable. I feel like this year the gameplay just seems more varied and fun to play.

Just a side note I was a fan of the old 2k baseball games although flawed they were fun to play and that's the key word there for me. Maybe not what I would do but they tried new things as far as gameplay is concerned. The show has always been an accurate depiction of baseball but has always felt almost too perfect to me. It's added in all the necessary features at this point as far as different pitch meters and ways to pitch and hit. I feel like this year just the increase in hit batters and everything else adds to the experience and wish they'd continue with this and try other new things just to make for a fun experience. One thing I dislike about games now is they may play well but really lack in that area of trying new things as far as gameplay is concerned. I feel like this version mixes it up a little more which is a good thing but they could go even futher with that. I don't feel like I'm playing the same game as last year like so many versions feel like with improved graphics and just overall improvement and getting closer to the real thing. There are noticeable differences although more slight than I would like.

I would have liked had they included the pitch clock in single player too. That's disapointing they didn't. Even more fielding adjustments and camera angles. I'm seeing new enimations but they really could do more here. I'm not playing the other modes. Just exibition and franchise so showtime and that stuff doesn't really apply to me. I'd like to see more gameplay enhancements on pop ups and everything else as far as different camera angles to make the experience and just added in things. Something lacking from sports games these days are those crazy things that happen in real games.

This is the WORST roster that has EVER come with the game when it comes to the unscanned faces. The scanned ones are fantastic, my opinion.

I don't know if this roster was done in house or it was contracted out. Either way it's......not good, and I'm being kind. I'm going to give it an F here.

A cursory glance at the roster without even going into the editor should have tipped someone off pre-release that (I know SDS prides themselves on this game, rightfully so) something is really off.

Take a gander at Terrell Tatum, one of MANY examples. It looks like his face was on fire and someone put it out, not too gently, with a track shoe. And KEPT putting it out, lol. It wouldn't be so bad if it actually looked somewhat reasonably like him. It's macabre, to say the least.

There are dozens of examples of the SAME face being used repeatedly for players (and these creations were NOT from the dozen or more very nice face templates that came with the game this year. Thank you for that SDS)
Players that look nothing like they do in real life…not even close.
        Extremely red skin tones.
Scruffy beards showing up on dozens of players who don't have scruffy beards.
Pock marked faces....really, really pock marked faces
Heads WAY too small for the bodies of the players
Turning some of the heads sideways noses that have these deformed huge zit looking things at the end.
Players cheeks that look they've been injected with about 3 pounds of filler.

There's more, but I went thru the roster and it didn't take me a couple/few minutes with these awful looking faces to make them reasonable facsimiles of the actual players.

I'm grateful that I DO have the ability to change the faces, but would like to see just a tad more attention next year to the players faces.

        That's it.

and thats why I give it 9&1/2 out of 10.

I was just glad this year rosters went back to being better balanced.
nothing worse than being dealt something like previously when I had IIRC 10 catchers and 3 leftfielders lol

Yes…. I was only talking about the unscanned faces. They still have far too many face choices. Some that I’m sure are never used as they are so bizarre.

For the pitching, it seems like even on Legend, it's on easy mode. I'm getting roughly 8-10 strikeouts a game, and the offense hasn't scored more than three runs in the 25 games I've played. I use Pulse, then tried Meter, and neither are offering a challenge at all.

At first I really thought the cpu punished mistake pitches more than last year.. but the more I play the more it’s like last year where they don’t really do too much even when missing your spots.. need a larger sample size to judge but it’s starting to feel too similar to 22

What????? This is a silly statement to make, especially citing a boat, that's certainly high priority, lol.

I am an oldal *** adult, so I have plenty of bills to pay, including putting my daughter through college, yet some how managed to buy a PS5.

As for the game, I just got back from a cruise and just bought the game, so I need to play it more. Initial impressions look good though to me.with what limited play time I have had

The bat sounds and commentary are phenomenal this year. The jump from year 1 to 2 with the commentary is very impressive.

Gameplay wise the show is stellar as always. Batting feels rewarding. I will say pitching continues to feel on the easy side which has been the case for the past couple of years. Even on legend + with upticks to the CPU contact and power, it can still feel punch less at times.

Pitching has been way too easy for a while now totally agree and ultimately it’s what stops me from playing

                            Long, long time player.

                            Fan of the game.

Have played approximately 14 games in franchise, as well as a previous franchise that I deleted. Historically play on AS, default sliders, clean screen, classic pitching….

This game is a mess. I’m not about to spend my time slider hunting (foolish). A punch less CPU (even tried pitching on HOF), foul ball, foul, foul, foul, foul, K…repeat. Pop up foul for an out….pop up foul for an out…I’m scorching the ball and putting the ball in play (not necessarily scoring just putting the ball between the lines) which is standard…the CPU…..not so much. Wash, rinse, repeat is the feeling I’m getting right now.

                            22 was damned near perfect.

This game lowkey has a severe lack of ground balls. I say lowkey bc you might not even notice if you’re not looking for it, but I’ll betcha five bucks your team is dead last in assists. I swear I go entire games without a grounder to SS sometimes. It’s not a big enough deal for me to stop playing but it bugs me and I can’t think of a single possible way to correct it considering the cpu offenses is already bad enough without forcing them into more weak grounders.
                              Just one man’s opinion.
I don’t actually care about any of this.
