      Spring Training News:

      <img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53374241425_2ea29d223e_o.jpg" width="720" height="405" alt="Flagstaff_Preseason_23"/>
Ryan Pressley is looking to have a big 2024.

Spring Training has ended with the Mesa Solar Sox (21-9) capturing the Grapefruit League with the defending champion Chandler Chiefs finishing second at (20-8). IN the Cactus League, the Glendale Desert Dogs captured the title with a (20-10) record. They edged out the El Paso Express (19-11).

Flagstaff struggled this spring, going (11-17) and finishing in 13th out of 15 teams. They also lost right fielder Emmitt Hampton to a torn calf that will likely sideline him until early May. The acquisition of Bradley York will help there. York hit four home runs and drove in nine runs in 64 spring training at-bats.

Some injury news to monitor as the regular season begins. Mesa will be without starting pitcher Jeff Teddy for about a month with a fractured hand. Salt River second baseman Josh Schneider torn a ligament in his finger and will be out into early May. Glendale third baseman Adrian Beltran broke his arm and will miss the first month of the season. Fresno second baseman Eddie Francisco fractured his wrist and will likely miss the first month or so of the season.

Rio Rancho’s new third baseman Richard Gates fractured his shin and will miss at least the first two weeks of the regular season. Albuquerque starter Alex Sbarbori torn his rotator cuff and will miss the entire 2024 season. He was (3-13) with a 5.39 ERA in 31 starts in 2023.

        Let’s Meet the Hops

        <img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53374122784_2e8168e7aa_o.jpg" width="720" height="405" alt="Flagstaff_Preseason2_23"/>
Art Mason and the Hops are looking to repeat as ML West champions in 2024.

        Stadium: Autozone Park (Capacity: 13.406)
        Overall Rank: 3rd
        Contact: 20th
        Power: 17th
        Pitching: 3rd
        Defense: 4th
        Speed: 4th

After making the playoffs in 2023, expectations are sky high up in northern Arizona this spring as the Hops are looking to build on their ML West title and a trip to the MLCS last fall. The team brought back just about everyone from last year’s team that won 87 games and swept Austin the in the playoffs before falling to El Paso.

The Hops did out outfielder Bradley York to the mix and it looked like they may try to move someone before Emmitt Hampton was injured in the spring. Once he returns from the Injured List, the team may need to move one of their outfielders.

The Pitching rotation looks to be one of the best in the IBL with defending Cy Young winner Shoe-Lace O’Tying at the top of the rotation with Ryan Pressley, Juro Yamaguchi, Alex Farmer and Ramon Garcia rounding it out. The team added a couple of lefties to the bullpen in Kenneth Valdez and Abraham Lopes, something that they felt was missing last season.

The Hops are prohibitive favorites in the ML West, over St George and Salt Lake.

The Pittsburgh Pirates maintained their lead over Milwaukee during their recent three game series. Milwaukee was however able to still keep that lead from getting to double digits.

The series saw the teams top pitchers face off Julio Urias (Pirates) Vs. Corbin Burnes (Brewers), Blake Snell Vs. Fredd Peralta and Roansy Contreras Vs. Brandon Woodruff.

In game one, neither Urias nor Burnes were as good as usual. The Pirates got to Burnes early with a run in both of the first two innings. Burnes lasted just 4.2 innigs thanks to a patient Pittsburgh lineup who ran his pitch count up. Milwaukee got to Urias in the fifth when a Tom Murphy homer knocked in himself and Seth Beer to tie the game at two a piece. Urias actually went the full game (8 innings) but he shouldnt have. He gave up two runs in both the 7th and 8th innings those runs put Milwaukee up for good, 6-3.

Snell lasted 5 innings in game two while Freddy Peralta lasted just 4.1. This game was all Pirates after the scoring started in the fourth inning when Jack Suwinksi hit a two run HR, his 10th on the year. The Pirates rolled past that point and won 7-1.

Game three was a shutout for Pittsburgh as Roansy Contreras pitched five good innings, allowing just one hit. Domingo German and Johan Oviedo finished out the game and also held Milwaukee off the board.

After a day off, Pittsburgh will travel to New York to take on the Mets (63-65/4th NL East).

                  Mets sweep Pirates

With just about five weeks left in the regular season, the Pittsburgh Pirates have all but wrapped up a trip to the playoffs. That is if they can avoid many more series like they just had against the Mets.

Those same Mets are fighting for their hopeful playoff lives. The division is just about officially out of reach for the Mets as they currently sit in third and 19 games back from the Braves. They do however currently hold the spot in the wildcard race but there they too will need to make up atleast the five game lead that the Phillies have on them.

There series against the Pirates helped keep things going in the right direction. The Pirates scored first in both the first and second games but the Mets quickly tied and eventually took the lead in both games and they did not let the Pirates have a comeback of their own. Both games were saved by Edwin Diaz whose 102 mph fastball made Pirates hitters look silly.

Game three should have been one that the Pirates could have counted on winning. It was current CY Young favorite Julio Urias' start but unfortunately, his recent cold streak continued. Urias lasted just 2.1 innings as the Mets seemingly hit every ball that came out of his hand. The biggest inning was that third inning when the Mets hit three home runs (Jeff Mcneil and Pete Alonso went back to back and Gavin Sheets added a two run shot of his own later in the inning). Eventually the score got pretty out of hand as the Mets took a 9-1 lead after five innings. The Pirates did make it a bit interesting in the seventh as they scored four of their own off of two homeruns (Tucupita Marcano and Oneil Cruz) but they werent able to score any more runs as the Mets took the 9-5 victory and the sweep.

Things dont get any easier for the Pirates as they head home to face off with the Dodger (82-39/1st NL West/0.5 over Padres).

The Pirates do hope to get Matt Frazier and Ji-Hwan Bae back off of the injured list within the next week.

                    March 31: Hops 5, Snow Sox 2

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - Flagstaff opened up the 2024 regular season by taking three of four from division rival Colorado Springs. The pitching was outstanding, allowing just eight runs in the four game series.

The Hops opened up the season with an impressive 6-2 victory over the Snow Sox. Flagstaff hit five home runs to win the season opener.

Colorado Springs would grab the lead in the fourth inning. Donnie Samuels singled, then stole second and third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Mike Rock.

Flagstaff answered with three in the fifth. Robbie Westbrook hit a two-run home run to left and Isaac Nettles followed with a solo shot to put the Hops up 3-1.

A solo home run from Robbie Westbrook in the seventh, following a 30 minute rain delay, made it 4-1. It was his second of the ball game.

The Hops would ice it in the eighth as Roberto Geronimo and David Benitez hit back-to-back dingers to make it 6-1.

Donnie Samuels would lead off the ninth with a triple and scored on a Mike Rock RBI single.

Shoe-Lace O’Tying (1-0), the defending Cy Young winner, looked the part on Opening Day. He tossed 6 1/3 innings before the rain delay, allowing one run on one hit. He struck out ten and walked one.

On Friday evening, the Hops followed up their win in the opener with a dominating pitching performance in a 2-1 victory. Ryan Pressley (1-0) tossed seven strong innings, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out seven and walking one.

The Snow Sox would grab a 1-0 lead in the second on a Juan Primo solo home run to left. Primo would go 2 for 3 with a double, home run and an RBI in the loss.

The Hops would get all of their offense in the bottom of the sixth on a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded from Roberto Geronimo. Geronimo went 2 for 3 with the game.

Robbie Westbrook followed up his big opener, by going 2 for 4 out of the lead off spot with a run scored.

Aldo Osuna and Vic Miller each worked 1-2-3 innings in relief, with Miller striking out the side in the ninth to pick up his first save on the year.

Sam Gonzalez (0-1) was saddled with the loss. He went 5 2/3 innings, allowing both runs on seven hits. He did not strike out or walk any batters.

On a rainy Saturday afternoon, the Snow Sox blew a two-run ninth inning lead, but rallied for a 3-2 ten inning victory to get their first win of the season. Donnell Marcus solo home run in the tenth off of reliever Samuel Espinoza put Colorado Springs ahead and they were able to hold on to pick up the win.

The Snow Sox would grab a 2-0 lead in the fifth on a solo home run from Roberto Silva and a Mike Rock two-out RBI single that scored Donnie Samuels.

It would remain that way until the bottom of the ninth with Colorado Springs bringing in their closer Cabrera, who was a perfect 41 for 41 in save opportunities in 2023. He would walk Roberto Geronimo, who reached second on a wild pitch. He got Oscar Aleman to line out to shortstop. Bradley York reached on an infield single to short. Forrest Owen then singled to left to score Geronimo and advanced to second on the throw. David Benitez was intentionally walked to load the bases. Robbie Westbrook then struck out. The lefty Jack Withenshaw was brought in to face Isaac Nettles but he would draw a walk to tie the game at 2-2. He would get Donnie Roland to strike out to send the game to extra innings.

In the tenth, Donnell Marcus would hit a solo home run off of Samuel Espinoza to put the Snow Sox up 3-2.

Art Mason would lead off the bottom half with a single. But Roberto Geronimo flew out to center and Oscar Aleman grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end it.

In Sunday afternoon’s finale, the Hops rallied late to secure the series win with a 5-2 victory. Art Mason’s bat came to life as he went 2 for 4 with a triple, home run and three RBIs in the victory.

Colorado Springs (1-3) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the fifth on a Todd Austin two-run home run to right center. It was his first on the season.

Flagstaff (3-1) would respond in the sixth. Robbie Westbrook would score on a two-out base hit from Josh Ortega to get the Hops on the board. Art Mason then blasted a two-run home run off of Humberto Aguilar to put the Hops in front 3-2.

In the eighth, Ortega came through again with a two-out RBI single that scored Kiko Pressley. Art Mason followed that up with a triple off the wall in center to score Ortega and give the Hops a three-run cushion.

Vic Miller would send the Snow Sox down in order, striking out two, as he picked up his second save of the series and clinched the series win for the Hops.

Alex Farmer (1-0) went six innings, allowing two run son four hits, while striking out eight and walking just one. Sam Varela pitched two hitless innings in relief, striking out five.

Humberto Aguilar (0-1) took the loss for the Snow Sox. He pitched six innings, allowing three runs in five hits. He struck out two.

The Hops will have Monday off before hosting Salt Lake (2-2) for a two game series to end the opening home stand.

Around the League: Chandler opened up their title defense with an 8-2 victory over Tucson. Center fielder Henry Ruiz went 4 for 5 with two home runs and three RBIs in the victory. Prescott built a six run lead, then held on for a 10-9 victory over Salt Lake as they opened their new ballpark, ASARCO Park. Juan Corona and Derek Hills each hit two home runs and drove in four in the losing effort for the Chukars. The teams combined for 19 runs, 29 hits and seven home runs.

T.J. Hart hot a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth as San Antonio walked it off against rival Austin on Friday night with a 5-4 victory.

On Saturday, T.J. Hart hit a bases clearing triple in the seventh to help San Antonio rally for a wild 12-10 victory over Austin. The teams combined for 26 hits, but only two home runs.

Roswell got a two-out grand slam from Angel Rodriguez in the bottom of the eighth to tie Albuquerque, then got a walk off RBI double from Damien Hudson to win it in the 10th. The Aliens improved to (2-0).

Pirates secure another winning month despite series loss

Although the Pirates have had a rough back half of August (5-8 since the 15th), they have secured yet another positive month in this 2024 season.

The Pirates did lose the series to the Dodgers in what could very well be a preview of a matchup to come in the playoffs.

Blake Snell started game one and continued the recent trend of the Pirates best pitchers not being so good. Snell gave up three runs in the first inning. Those runs came thanks to five first inning hits for the Dodgers. After that however, Snell settled down and the Pirates eventually tied the game at three a piece after scoring two in the fourth and Oneil Cruz hitting a solo shot (25) in the 5th. Snell did give up a fourth run in the 7th inning when Miguel Rojas hit an rbi double. The Dodgers scored another in the 9th and Evan Phillips saved his 45th game of the season. At the time, that save put Phillips two ahead of the Pirates David Bednar.

Roansy Contreras performed better than his teammates have been in game three. He pitched six strong innings while he allowed six hits, walked one and struck out six. A tandem of Chase De Jong and David Bednar finished out the shutout. The Pirates three runs came off another homerun by Cruz (26) and Endy Rodriguez (9).

Game three saw the Dodgers get out to a 4-0 lead thanks to two homeruns by Max Muncy and another by Andy Pages. The Pirates did score two in the 8th but werent able to complete the comeback as Phillips got yet another save to give the Dodgers the series victory.

The Pirates will now finish off the month and head into Septemeber with three Vs. the Brewers who luckily have had a tough stretch as well and still sit nine behind Pittsburgh.

                        APRIL 2-3: SALT LAKE (4-2) @ FLAGSTAFF (3-3)
                        Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 13,406)

                        April 2: Chukars 9, Hops 4
                        April 3: Chukars 9, Hops 8 (13)

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Salt Lake Chukars came into AutoZone Park and swept a two game series with the Flagstaff Hops to move into first place in the ML West, a spot held by Flagstaff since the start of the 2023 season.

On Tuesday evening, Salt Lake pounded out fifteen hits in a 9-4 defeat of the Hops at AutoZone Park. Robby Payne lead the way, going 3 for 4 with a double, home run and two RBIs to help lead the Chukars into a first place tie with Flagstaff.

Salt Lake jumped out quickly, scoring twice in the first off of Ramon Garcia. Rafael Geronimo hit a two-run home run to left that scored Gomes to put the Chukars up 2-0. The Hops answered with a sacrifice fly from Josh Ortega that plated Isaac Nettles to cut the lead in half.

But Salt Lake would go pull away in the third. David Hernandez, just acquired from Mesa, would leave off the inning with a solo home run to left, his first as a Chukar. Richie Guerrero and Robby Payne would add RBI singles to put Salt Lake up 5-1. They would extend that lead to 8-1 in the sixth. Juan Corona would hit a sac fly, scoring Robby Payne who led off the inning with a double. Pablo Gomes would hit a solo home run and Rafael Geronimo would add an RBI single.

The Hops would get three back in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little too late. Art Mason hit a solo home run, his second, and Shoe-Lace O’Tying would drive in two with a single to right to cut the deficit to 9-4. O’Tying got the start at designated hitter.

Ramon Garcia (0-1) took the loss, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits. Len Rainey (1-0) picked up the win for the Chukars, tossing seven innings and allowing four runs on seven hits, while striking out five and walking none.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Chukars jumped out to an early lead, withstood a Flagstaff rally and won in thirteen innings 9-8. Derek Hills went 3 for 5 with a triple, home run and drove in five, including the game winner as Salt Lake moved to the top of the ML West.

Derek Hills got the Chukars going with a two-run home run in the second as Salt Lake jumped out to a 2-0 lead. He would add a two-run triple in the eighth that put Salt Lake up 7-3 and it looked like the Chukars would cruise to a sweep.

But Josh Ortega blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to pull Flagstaff to within 7-6. Then with two outs in the ninth, Phillip Choi hit has third double of the game, scoring Bradley York to tie the game at 7-7.

In the thirteenth, Darell McCloud’s RBI double off of Aldo Osuna to put the Chukars up 8-7. Derek Hills would then single home McCloud with a huge insurance run. Art Mason would homer off of Garry Macbeth to pull the Hops to within one, but they could not push across another run and lost 9-8.

The loss dropped Flagstaff out of first place for the first time in over a year. They closed out their opening home stand at (3-3) and will now head to Utah to take on St George for a four game weekend series.

Around the League: Newly acquired Julius Matsui tossed seven strong innings as Mesa built an 11-0 lead, then held on for an 11-7 victory over Chandler. The Chiefs had the bases loaded in the ninth before closer Dane Radatz had to be brought in to get the final out, a strikeout of Cory Law. On Monday evening, center fielder Percy Sievers hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth as Fresno walked off the Phoenix Firebirds 6-5 to improve to (3-2). Ryan Benson then hit a grand slam and drove in five on Tuesday evening as the Bears beat up on Phoenix 10-1.

Gilbert pounded out 20 hits, including a club record 10 doubles in a 15-5 thrashing of Henderson. Hideo Yoshida went 3 for 6 with two doubles and six RBIs to lead the way for the Barnstormers.

Amarillo scored four times in the top of the ninth to build a 9-5 lead over Fort Worth, only to watch the Kings rally with five of their own in the bottom half to win a 10-9 walk off. Randy Klaus’ three-run bomb was the difference as the Kings moved into first place in the ML East at (3-1).

Blake Pacinelli hit a walk-off, two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth as Roswell defeated Santa Fe 5-4 to remain undefeated, improving to (4-0).

Las Vegas has lost right fielder Enrique Lima for up to eight weeks after he fractured his arm running to the outfield wall in the Nuggets 5-2 loss to Long Beach on Monday night. El Paso lost second baseman Bud Perez for 8-12 weeks with a fractured shin that he injured sliding into second base on Tuesday evening.

Matt Campbell (1-0) tossed a complete game shutout on Tuesday evening, striking out 11, as San Diego defeated San Antonio 4-0.

Salt River’s Dorta tossed a complete game shutout, scattering six hits and striking out two in a 2-0 victory Cosmo for the Rafters over Tucson.

Roster Moves: Flagstaff made a couple of roster moves, claiming starting pitcher Geraldo Rodriguez off of waivers from Salt River and claiming shortstop Jimmy James off of waivers from Fresno. Both were assigned to Triple-A Albuquerque on assignment waivers.

Pirates take season series over Brewers

The regular season series between the Pirates and Brewers is over and Pittsburgh has won it, 8-5. The Two faced off twice in August. The Pirates went 4-2 in those games.

The latest series was won by the Pirates, two games to one. The first two games were both shutouts for the Pirates as both starters, Mitch Keller and Julio Urias pitched well. In game one, Keller pitched through six, allowed eight hits and struck out six. Most importantly, he didnt allow a single run. Johan Oviedo and David Bednar closed out the game. Bednar got his 45th save of the season. The Pirates top two power hitters had been in hr slumps. CJ Cron had last hit a homerun on August 7th while Anthony Santander's last came on the eighth. Cron broke his slump in game one with a second inning solo shot. Santander's is still going. Aside from Cron's homerun, the Pirates added two more runs via a couple of rbi singles by Michael Brantley and Endy Rodriguez in the 7th inning. The Pirates went on to win, 3-0.

As mentioned, Julio Urias was great in game two. Unfortunately, so was the Brewers pitching staff. Freddy Peralta started the game for Milwaukee and was phenominal even though his day ended after just five and a third due to pitch count. While he was in, he allowed just one hit, walked two and struck out six. Urias went eight and a third for the Pirates. He allowed five hits and struck out eight.

Offensively, neither team could get anything going. That was until the 10th inning after Joe Jiminez held Milwaukee scoreless. Michael Brantley led off the Pirates half of the inning and on a 3-2 count, he blooped a single into left field that brough the Pirates ghost runner, Matt Frazier home.

The Pirates got two in the first of game three. One of those came off of a Oneil Cruz solo shot #27. Cruz has been hot in the back half of August. The Brewers tied it up in the second with two homeruns of their own, Luis Urias hit his 16th of the year and Mike Brosseau hit his first. Brosseau was called up just before the game and his homerun came on his first at bat in the MLB this year. The Brewers captured the momentum at that point and went on to beat the Pirates 9-4 to avoid the sweep.

The Pirates enter the last month of the season with a healty lead in the NL Central and sit just one game behind the Braves for the top spot in the NL as a whole. The Padres (88-50) and Dodgers (85-54) are also trying to get to that top spot.

The Pirates head back on the road for a three game series against the worst team in baseball this year, the Washington Nationals (36-101).

Things have been crazy outside of MLB The Show, so I've only completed like four games in the past two weeks...

The Nationals took two of three from the Phillies, but lost Brandon Drury and Gio Urshela for the remainder of the season. Nolan Jones, the no. 66 prospect in the majors, made his debut and recorded a few hits during his first three games. The Nationals also took their first game against the Rockies before dropping game two.

We are still in the Wild Card race thanks to a hot second half, but with injuries to some of the top players, it might be a tough challenge to pull off another late rally to make the postseason. We were able to do it in 2023, but it's a tall ask for a repeat this year.

                              Ahhh Baseball

Baseball is a great sport and at times can be highly unpredictable. For instance, most would think a 89-48 team would have a pretty good shot at sweeping a 36-101 team. And of course, if it wasnt a sweep, certainly it would be a win right?

Not this time, the Pirates who are looking to put away the NL Central, lost two out of three to the Washington Nationals who have been eliminated from playoff contention for quite some time.

The Pirates won game one 3-1 but then lost the next two to give the Nationals their first series win in over a month (last was a two game sweep of Baltimore July 23-24th).

Game two started off poorly for the Pirates and started Jack Flaherty when James Wood (#8) and Joey Wiemer (#9) went back to back in the bottom of the second inning. After that however, Flaherty locked in and allowed just two more hits and no runs on his way through seven innings. Unfortunately , Pittsburgh's offense wasnt any better against Stephen Strasburg who allowed just one hit through 5+ innings. The Pirates did end up tieing the game in the top of the seventh when Andrew Mccutchen hit a pinch hit two run double off of Matt Cronin. The Nationals then answered back in the 8th with a Ray Spann two run HR that gave them the 4-2 lead that was eventually the final score.

The Pirates led game three in the 7th inning, 3-1 but Mitch Keller was left in too long and gave up four in the bottom half of that inning and Washington ended up taking the game 5-4 and the series, 2-1.

The Pirates are still very close to clinching a playoff birth but need to get some kind of win streak going if they hope to overtake the Braves for the top spot in the NL. As of now, Pittsburgh is two games behind Atlanta.

The Pirates will now continue their road trip as they head to Chicago to take on the Cubs (62-80/4th NL Central).

                                April 7: Archers 6, Hops 3

St George, UT (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops dropped three of four in St George to open up their first road trip of the season.

The Archers won their home opener in dramatic fashion with a bases loaded walk-off RBI single from Sam Robinson as they defeated the Hops 3-2. The loss was the Hops third straight after opening the year at (3-1).

Flagstaff would grab an early lead in this one as Donnie Roland lined a two-out single in the first to score Robbie Westbrook.

The Archers would tie it up in the third as Scottie Hager hit a solo home runoff of Ryan Pressley.

The Archers would take the lead in the eighth as Harper Reyes homered off of reliever Kenneth Valdez. It was Reyes third home run on the year.

In the ninth, Art Mason came through with a pinch hit, RBI double with two outs that tied the game at 2-2 after Oscar Aleman drew a walk.

But the Hops could not take advantage and in the 11th, Sam Robinson lined a two-out, two-strike pitch into right to score Scottie Hager with the winning run for the Archers. Pedro Macias (0-1) took the loss. Ryan Pressley was impressive again, tossing seven innings and allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out seven and walking two.

On Friday night, the Archers used a three-run first inning to go on to a 5-3 victory over the Hops. Sam Robinson, the hero on Thursday, hit a three-run home run off of Juro Yamaguchi in the first inning to help pace the Archers to the win and drop Flagstaff into last place in the ML West.

The Hops would respond in the second as Oscar Aleman hit a three-run home run to tie the game, breaking a 1 for 20 slump. It was his first home run on the year.

St George would retake the lead for good in the bottom of the second on a two-out RBI single from Mikey Fisher.

The Archers would add an insurance run in the sixth on a solo homer from Victor Sixto.

Juro Yamaguchi (0-1) took the loss for Flagstaff. He pitched six innings, allowing five runs on five hits. Lamont Lawrence (1-0) was credited with the win for St George. He pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits.

Sam Goodman earned his fourth save on the season as he worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

On Saturday night, the Hops broke a four game losing streak with a 4-3 victory in 16 innings. Josh Ortega broke the tie with a solo home run to left in the top of the sixteenth to win it.

Jamaal McCormick would put St George up 2-0 in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run off of Alex Farmer.

The Hops would tie it up in the third. Forrest Owen lead off with a single to left. Kiki Pressley then tripled him home and scored on a sacrifice from by Roberto Geronimo. The Hops would go up 3-2 in the fourth on a Forrest Owen RBI single that score Josh Ortega.

St George would get that run back in the bottom half on a Roberts RBI single.

It would stay that way all the way until the 16th inning when Ortega homered off of Roberto Velasquez.

Kenneth Valdez would tightrope out of the bottom half, stranding the bases loaded to pick up the win. Valdez got Harper Reyes to pop out and Eric Klein to ground out to third to end it and broke the Hops four game losing streak.

Vic Miller had to leave the game after just five pitches with tightness in his torso. The Hops bullpen threw ten innings of shutout baseball, allowing seven hits and striking out nine.

In the finale, the Archers hit five home runs to power themselves to a 6-3 victory to take the series. Sammy Gomez went 2 for 2 with two home runs and three RBIs to help lead the way for St George.

The Archers would grab an early lead off of Ramon Garcia and the Hops. Angel Montes hit a solo home run in the first and Sam Robinson hit a solo home run in the second as the Archers built a 2-0 lead.

Flagstaff would get those two back in the third on a Robbie Westbrook RBI single that drove in red-hot Kiko Pressley, and a sacrifice fly from Josh Ortega.

But Sammy Gomez would hit a two-run shot in the fifth to put St George ahead for good, 4-2. Chris Taylor would hit a solo home run in the sixth and Sammy Gomez hit his second home run of the game in the seventh to put the Archers in front by four.

Kiko Pressley went 3 for 4 with an RBI and run scored in the loss. He is hitting .500 through the first ten games of the season for Flagstaff. No other batter it hitting over .280.

Ramon Garcia (0-2) took the loss, pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on five hits. He has an ERA of 9.64 through his first two starts.

Tommy Franco (1-1) picked up the win for the Archers with Sam Goodman throwing one pitch in the ninth and getting Robbie Westbrook to ground into the game ending 6-4-3 double play to pick up his fifth save.

The Hops (4-6) will travel to Colorado Springs to close out the trip as they take on the Snow Sox (4-6).

Around the League: Fort Worth’s Gabriel Carmona tossed eight strong innings, allowing one run on just three hits, while striking out seven as he improved to (2-0) in a 6-1 victory over West Texas.
