      APRIL 30-May 1, 2024: FLAGSTAFF (13-18) @ SURPRISE (19-12)
      Stadium: Surprise Stadium (Capacity: 8,542)

      April 30: Saguaros 5, Hops 2
      May 1: Saguaros 4, Hops 0

Surprise, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops ended their eight game road trip by getting swept in a short two-game series in Surprise.

Surprise grabbed the opener as they rallied for a 5-2 victory over the Hops. Steve Mihelich led the way, going 3 for 4 with a double, two home runs and two RBIs, whiel scoring three runs.

Flagstaff would jump out to a 2-0 lead on solo home runs from Josh Ortega (9) and Bradley York (3) in the first and second innings.

But the Saguaros answered in the second as Joe Gallagher hit a solo home run off fo Ramon Garcia. They would tie it up in the fourth inning on Steve Mihelich's first hom erun of the ball game.

A two-out RBI single in the sixth from Andre Everett put Surprise in front for the first time in the game. A sacrifice fly from Alberto Ruiz added an insurance run in the seventh and Mihelich's second home run on the game in the eighth made it 5-2.

Ramon Garcia (0-3) took the loss, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on nine hits. He struck out six and walked one.

Perez (4-2) picked up the iwn for the Saguaros. He worked six innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Muary Keith worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his tenth save on the season.

In Wednesday afternoon's finale, Gus Woodson tossed a complete game five-hit shutout as Surprise completed the sweep with a 4-0 victory.

The Saguaros jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Ken Hollinger homered off of Russell Fluty in the first inning. They would extend that lead to 3-0 in the fourth as Darrell McCloud hit a two-run home run. The Saguaraos would add another run in the fifth on a Ricardo Rodriguez RBI double.

Russell Fluty (0-2) took the loss for the Hops. He pitched five innings, allowing all five runs on seven hits. Kenneth Valdez and Sam Varela worked the final three innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one base hit.

The loss dropped the Hops to (13-18) as they will return home to take on ML East leading San Antonio (19-12) for a four game weekend series and then welcome Albuquerque (13-17) to town.

Around the League: San Antonio pounded out 17 hits in a 12-2 romp over St George. Every positional player except for one had two hits in the victory for the first place Javelinas.

Rio Rancho's Darrick Larkin hist three doubles, including a two run double in the 12th inning as the Owlz rallied to defeat Glendale 6-4 on Tuesday evening.

Fort Worth won a 13-10 slugfest over Salt Lake at Deseret Field. The teams combined for 34 hits and eight home runs in the contest. King's catcher Tim Ferreira went 3 for 5 with a triple and two stolen bases to help lead Fort Worth to the win.

Chandler's Stanley Tagushi improved to (3-0) as he tossed seven solid innings, allowing one run on six hits, while striking out eight in a 7-1 victory for the Chiefs over Fresno. Cory Law hit a grand slam in the seventh to break open a close game.

Trades: Colorado Spring is already in fire sale mode as they have shipped 30-year-old closer Jeff Cabrera (88 OVR, A POT) to Goodyear in exchange for 22-year-old center fielder Edmundo Rodriguez (80 OVR. A POT). Cabrera has racked up 91 saves the last two seasons, but will fill the role of setup man in Goodyear. The Jack Rabbits now have arguably the best bullpen in the entire IBL as they look to make a push for their first playoff appearance in 2024.

Cardinals end 2029 with losing record, missing playoffs for first time in 5 years

The Cardinals have concluded the 2029 season with a losing record for the first time since 2023, which is the last time they missed the playoffs. The Cardinals finished the season 76-86 which was good for 4th place in the NL Central.

It was an ugly season marred by injuries and just bad years from key components. The pitching staff was inconsistent at best and injuries just plagued the lineup. The Cardinals will have a busy offseason upcoming as they look to rebuild and add depth so that should injuries occur next year, they will be better suited to handle them and maintain success.

The Cardinals have 4 big time exclusive free agents to try to re-sign this winter; Nolan Gorman, Alex Reyes, Jack Flaherty, and Dylan Carlson. They also have player options they will be waiting on with Garrett Crochet and Reid Detmers.

Texas Rangers are the 2029 World Series Champions

The Texas Rangers have won the World Series beating the surprising Reds in 6 games. The Rangers were a wild card team and beat the Red Sox in the ALCS. The Reds won the NL Central and beat the Dodgers in the NLCS.

        Playoff teams:

        AL EAST - Red Sox
        AL Central - Twins
        AL West - Angels
        Wildcard 1 - Rangers
        Wildcard 2 - Rays
        Wildcard 3 - Guardians

        NL East - Braves
        NL Central - Reds
        NL West - Dodgers
        Wildcard 1 - Padres
        Wildcard 2 - Nationals
        Wildcard 3 - Pirates

          Cardinals exclusive negotiation period results

The Cardinals exclusive negotiation period didn't go as well as they had hoped, as they were only able to re-sign Alex Reyes (2yr/$20M) and get Reid Detmers to exercise his player option ($25M). Outside of that, they missed out and now will have to contend with players in the free agent market.

          Dylan Carlson
          Garrett Crochet (declined $8M option)
          Jack Flaherty
          Nolan Gorman

Resigning all 4 is a top priority now for the Cardinals front office, as this year's free agent class isn't quite as deep as its been in year's past.

Cardinals re-sign Nolan Gorman, Garrett Crochet, and Dylan Carlson

The Cardinals re-signed 3 of their big 4 free agents who didn't sign during the exclusive negotiation period. The Cardinals signed 1B Nolan Gorman (4 years/$86M), LHP Garrett Crochet (4 years/$42M), and RF Dylan Carlson (5 years/$64M) within a few days of each other to avoid a full panic in the front office and likely bring about a form of rebuild.

Gorman was solid last year earning his first trip to the All-Star Game (may have gone in '28 but was injured) and was for a time in the running for NL MVP despite the team's struggles. Crochet and Carlson both had down years last year as both dealt with injuries that cost them at least a month of the season. If both can stay healthy this year, a bounce back year is almost expected.

The Cardinals are still negotiating with Jack Flaherty to bolster a rotation that will likely see younger arms this year.

              2025 Pittsburgh Pirates 03/31-04/02

              Overall Record:4-2 (2nd NL Central/1.0 behind Cincinnati

              Game Results

              Game 1

              Cardinals-6

              Game 2

              Game 3
              Pirates-6
              Cardinals-0

Pirates achieve first sweep of 2025

The Pirates initial homestand may have been ruined when they lost two of three to the Cubs, however, their first road trip couldnt have gone much better.

The Pirates traveled to St. Louis and swept the Cardinals to continue the Cardinal's rough start as they now sit at 1-6.

The Cardinals lone win also came in their first when newly acquired Walker Buehler pitched a complete game in a 6-1 victory against the Reds who have only lost that one game.

Buehler also pitched game three versus the Pirates but didnt fare quite as well. The last game of the series saw Buehler face off with the Pirates ace, Julio Urias who in contrast, struggled in his first start.

Both were on early on but the Pirates did finally get to Buehler in the fifth inning. That inning started with a leadoff Termarr Johnson triple, his first of the year. Yoennis Sherry then walked and stole second. The pair were then hit in with a Matt Frazier double, although, Frazier was thrown out at third as he tried to get himself a triple as well.

Buehler worked into the sixth inning but was taken out after getting just one out. Bryan Reynolds then welcomed the new pitcher, Zack Thompson into the game with a three run HR, his third in the first week of the 2025 season. Gary Sanchez added an rbi of his own in the innings and the Pirates took a 6-0 lead that they would eventually finish with.

The Pirates will look to extend their four game streak as they head back home to face off with the Oakland Athletics (1-6/5th AL West).

Jack Flaherty signs 4 year deal with Astros

The Cardinals offseason plans took a hit as Jack Flaherty turned down the Cardinals offer in favor of signing with the Houston Astros on a 4 year deal.

The Cardinals were relying on the veteran righty to resign to be part of the one two punch with Reid Detmers as they have talented, but unproven younger arms likely filling out the rest of the rotation this Spring.

The Cardinals now will scour the free agent market for veteran rotation help.

Are most people going to get 24? I honestly, for the first time ever, am torn. I've played almost 300 hours of 23 and love the game, have had a few long running franchises as well. But as a franchise only player, I'm becoming less and less inclined to get the game year over year. I was going to do the same for Madden and 2K, and then ended up caving on Black Friday for the new ones.

Curious to hear other people who play similarly thoughts?

Yeah 100% I'm planning on getting it. I've logged something like 1300 hours in franchise for '23

Yeah i'll be getting it on release as always. I think i'm around 900 hours logged this year, 98% of that being franchise. I was always in the same boat, being on the fence, but i've gotten The show on release every year since about 2010. If I stopped doing it now, It'd just feel wrong. Its such a yearly tradition I look forward to, I can't not get it. Even after every year we have such high hopes to get things added, and end up being a bit disappointed, its always the little things that get added every year that make me enjoy the game all the time.

The last couple years I've been playing the show year round religiously, that I always look forward to the next year's version.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

After reading OS forums today, which lead to me having a show itch at work today, I had to go to YouTube to watch some random franchise videos. Led me to this crazy idea and I had to come home and try it tonight.

Calling it a “5 player select rebuild”. Taking a team (in this instance), I took the Nationals; only particular reason, not many long term contracts and hopefully I’ll explain enough below.

                        My rules:
-Roster: current offseason roster from the vault, with updated 2024 contracts - but honestly doesn’t matter much.
-You can “Hold” any 5 players within your organization after year 1, and the rest of the roster is GONE in the first off season. (Any players on the roster with long term extensions, I.e. keibert Ruiz, are released or traded {whoever they’re traded for, are released}). Now first year 2023 draft picks I didn’t count; they can stay on the roster.

-simulate year 1. Wait until Dec. 2 hits, so all your renewable contracts deadline passes and all those players are gone and in FA.
-after that, free agents are fair game. Now mind you, I didn’t feel right going out and signing all the big names in free agency. I wanted to give my roster a “healthy” base but not exceeding $90-100m.

With that being said, here are the players I will base my future and franchise around:
                        1. CJ Abram
                        2. Josiah Gray
                        3. Mackenzie Gore
                        4. Dylan Crews
                        5. James Wood

Definitely some tough decisions on who was letting off this list BUT I think these guys have the chance to be the best building pieces.

I won’t go through every signing during FA, but here are a few highlights, and after spring training ends, I’ll unfold the lineups, rotation and Bullpen.

                        Top 5 position signings:
                        1. 1B Paul Goldschmidt 1yr/15.5m (89ovr)
                        2. 3B Matt Chapman 1yr/75m (80ovr)
                        3. RF Jason Hayward 1yr/4.5m (74ovr)
                        4. Util Willi Castro 1yr/3.5m (73ovr)
                        5. INF Edmundo Sosa 1yr/2.4m (72ovr)

                        Top 5 pitching signings:
                        1. SP Clayton Kershaw 1yr/10m (82ovr)
                        2. RP Jeff Hoffman 3yr/10m (80ovr)
                        3. RP Aroldis Chapman 1yr/2.5m (74ovr)
                        4. SP Danny Duffy 1yr/4m (73ovr)
                        5. SP Joey Lucchesi 1yr/2m (71ovr)

Finally, you’re probably asking yourself… “why in the hell would you want to do something like?” Well, because I enjoy really out there ideas for franchise and just to change up the narrative every now and then. So in this instance, we’ll just say the Nationals got severely penalized for tampering with International Free Agents and draft prospects over the course of a long period of time, and MLB dropped the hammer that this is the only way around a complete termination of the organization.

Looking forward to hopefully keeping you updated on this odd journey lol

Calling it a “5 player select rebuild”. Taking a team (in this instance), I took the Nationals; only particular reason, not many long term contracts and hopefully I’ll explain enough below.

                          My rules:
-Roster: current offseason roster from the vault, with updated 2024 contracts - but honestly doesn’t matter much.
-You can “Hold” any 5 players within your organization after year 1, and the rest of the roster is GONE in the first off season. (Any players on the roster with long term extensions, I.e. keibert Ruiz, are released or traded {whoever they’re traded for, are released}). Now first year 2023 draft picks I didn’t count; they can stay on the roster.

-simulate year 1. Wait until Dec. 2 hits, so all your renewable contracts deadline passes and all those players are gone and in FA.
-after that, free agents are fair game. Now mind you, I didn’t feel right going out and signing all the big names in free agency. I wanted to give my roster a “healthy” base but not exceeding $90-100m.

With that being said, here are the players I will base my future and franchise around:
                          1. CJ Abram
                          2. Josiah Gray
                          3. Mackenzie Gore
                          4. Dylan Crews
                          5. James Wood

Definitely some tough decisions on who was letting off this list BUT I think these guys have the chance to be the best building pieces.

I won’t go through every signing during FA, but here are a few highlights, and after spring training ends, I’ll unfold the lineups, rotation and Bullpen.

                          Top 5 position signings:
                          1. 1B Paul Goldschmidt 1yr/15.5m (89ovr)
                          2. 3B Matt Chapman 1yr/75m (80ovr)
                          3. RF Jason Hayward 1yr/4.5m (74ovr)
                          4. Util Willi Castro 1yr/3.5m (73ovr)
                          5. INF Edmundo Sosa 1yr/2.4m (72ovr)

                          Top 5 pitching signings:
                          1. SP Clayton Kershaw 1yr/10m (82ovr)
                          2. RP Jeff Hoffman 3yr/10m (80ovr)
                          3. RP Aroldis Chapman 1yr/2.5m (74ovr)
                          4. SP Danny Duffy 1yr/4m (73ovr)
                          5. SP Joey Lucchesi 1yr/2m (71ovr)

Finally, you’re probably asking yourself… “why in the hell would you want to do something like?” Well, because I enjoy really out there ideas for franchise and just to change up the narrative every now and then. So in this instance, we’ll just say the Nationals got severely penalized for tampering with International Free Agents and draft prospects over the course of a long period of time, and MLB dropped the hammer that this is the only way around a complete termination of the organization.

Looking forward to hopefully keeping you updated on this odd journey lol
This is the kind of franchise challenge that I like, nice job. I'm always a "franchise challenge" type of MLB gamer. I'd be curious to see how this ends up.

But as a franchise only player, I'm becoming less and less inclined to get the game year over year. I was going to do the same for Madden and 2K, and then ended up caving on Black Friday for the new ones.

This was going to be the first time I was considering not getting it but then I decided why not. If anything I can do my little part to support SDS and buy it.

Well here is an update after spring Training!

The Nationals head into 2024 with unknown expectations mainly because of the roster turnover from the offseason. We don't really know what kind of production we'll get from any of these guys, but we're hoping for the best. We have alot of veteran presence on the roster between our position players and the pitchers that we signed. I feel like playing .500 ball this year may be kind of a reach, but I feel like that is our highest goal right now.

The Roster is constructed like this:

                              Position Players:
With the chances of our lineup changing often because of platoons and "whose got the hot bat", I'll give a rundown of whose going to play where rather than the "expected" lineups.

                              C- Travis d'Arnaud
                              1B- Paul Goldschmidt
2B- Luis Guillorme / Edmundo Sosa
                              3B- Matt Chapman
                              SS- CJ Abrams
                              LF- Eduardo Manzanillo*
                              CF- Kyle Isbel
                              RF- Jason Heyward
DH - Willi Castro / Seth Beer

*Eduardo Manzanillo is a 19 year old kid we picked up in our first year draft in 2023. After completely MISSING on our first round, 2nd overall pick, a starting pitcher (76pot/58ovr), we picked up Manzanillo in the second round and he looked promising right from the start. Hes a 74ovr OF prospect with a C potential, but he plays much bigger than his overall or potential may entail. I had him on the 40 man in ST to see what he could do, and he absolutely raked during the spring. Hitting over .310 with 5HR and 18RBI in 60+ at bats, made me have him apart of the opening day roster with the big league club.

                              Our Bench guys:
                              C - Elih Marrero*
                              1B/OF/DH - Seth Beer
                              2b/INF - Ronny Simon*
                              OF - Niko Hulsizer*
                              INF - Edmundo Sosa
                              *-Rule 5 draft picks

                              Rotation:
                              Josiah Gray
                              Clayton Kershaw
                              Mackenzie Gore
                              Danny Duffy
                              Joey Lucchesi

Annnd I forgot to make note of my bullpen, so i'll have to update that later on.

Looking forward to getting into the season and playing with this team. As it may look to the eyes, this roster has alot to be desired, but much of this roster is guys who haven't really had a chance to shine with their previous clubs or guys who are nearing the end of their career. As i think about this more, I'm really excited to see how far I can go with this franchise and how much change we'll need to even sniff the playoffs. Thanks for reading.

This my fav part of franchise. Trying to piece a team together on a limited budget, or using whatever is available and seeing what you can get out of it. Love it.
