9-4 in my Mariners chise. Had some crazy games. Blow outs, come backs, down to the wire. Clutch hitting. Good and bad pitching. It’s only 13 games in and I’ve had so many different results. No game feels the same. I’m really enjoying this.

That’s how my Mets franchise is. I get on a hot streak where I think I might need to raise the difficulty, then a few games later I’m so bad I want to throw my PS4 out the window

Pitchers shine in sweep of Padres

Vince Velasquez, Roansy Contreras and Mitch Keller were phenomenal for the Pirates in their three game series sweep against the San Diego Padres and their high-powered offense.

Velasquez took the mound in game one and allowed just one run in six innings of work. That run came in the first inning off a Fernando Tatis JR rbi single. After that, Velasquez kept the Padres off the board his offense backed him up with five runs off rbi's by Ke'Bryan Hayes (2), Anthony Santander (2) and Ji-Man Choi (1).

Game two saw Roansy Contreras continue his upward trend. After a pretty rough start to the year, Contreras has been solid as of late. That continued in game two as he pitched eight strong innings while he struck out 12 Padre Hitters. Anthony Santander added another two RBI's in this game while Jared Triolo continues to make the most of his limited starts with two hits, one RBI and one stolen base. Miguel Adujar also made his season debut in his return to the majors as he went two for three.

Not to be out done, Mitch Keller pitched a complete game shutout in game three. The Pirates also struggled to get any offense going but a Bryan Reynolds rbi single and a Jack Suwinski three run HR led to the victory. Miguel Andujar made his second start of the season and although he went hitless, a first inning strike from left to home cut down an early potential Padre run to set the tone for the game.

The Pirates will now return home for a three game series Vs. the Phillies (60-43/2nd NL East) to end the month of July.

Pirates add veteran to their rotation

As the season heads toward the All-Star break, teams are looking to fill their holes. The Yankees are no different and they sent a trade offer to the Pirates that could do that for both teams.

The Yankees offered the Pirates Domingo German (30 YO RHP 78 OVR C POT) for Henry Davis (23 YO C 68 OVR B POT). An offer that the Pirates felt compelled to accept. Davis has great potential but with Endy Rodriguez already looking like the catcher of the future, Davis' role had yet to be defined. German will take over the fourth spot in the rotation with JT Brubaker being added to the bullpen as for now, another long relief option aside from Jovan Oviedo who has been stellar. Davis could be added to New York's MLB lineup soon as Kyle Higashioka continues to recover from a broken arm.

Padres Walk Off Pirates Win 5-4
'

Austin Nola hit a walk off single in the bottom of the 9th inning to push the Padres past the Pirates 5-4. Xander Bogaerts and Trent Grisham hit home runs in the winning effort. Fresh off the IL O'Neil Cruz had a pair of hits including a home run and a stolen base in a losing effort for the Pirates. Josh Hader improved his record to 4-5 as he earned the W after a clean 9th inning.

The Padres record now stands at 54-48 and they are just 2 games back of the division leading Diamondbacks who've lost 7 of their last 10. After a day off the Padres will host the Texas Rangers (63-40) for a 3 game series over the weekend.

Draft and Trade Deadline

With the 5th overall pick in the 2025 MLB draft the A's chose SP Felipe Nieves.

Matt Chapman and Brent Rooker were named to the AL All Star team.

Chapman is having a bounce back after a tough initial season back in Oakland and is hitting 310/385/531 with 15hrs and 3.9 WAR

Rooker continues his surprise rise as a star slugger with a league leading 30 homers to go with a 316/397/627 line for 3.9 WAR.

In AAA RP Joe Holan, CP, Rickey England, and LF Luis Cresp were All Stars for the Las Vegas Aviators.

At the trade deadline the A's sit at 56-52.
10.5 behind the Astros in the AL West and 4.5 games out of the Wild Card. The A's have scored the second most runs in baseball but have allowed the 6th most.

Management decided to reward their long suffering fans with a push to the playoffs and upgrade the pitching staff so as not to waste their top flight offense.

Struggling young pitcher Sixto Sanchez was their first addition. Getting him from the Marlins for Shintaro Fujinami and AAA prospect SP Joey Estes.

To fortify the bullpen the A's traded AAA LF JJ Bleday for the Twins' RP Griffin Jax.

1b Seth Brown, LF Akil Baddoo and RP Adbert Alzolayb were traded to ARI for CP Andres Munoz and LF AJ Vuckovich

The biggest move was trading for veteran SP Jack Flagerty for prospects SS Victor Acosta, RF Roberto Campos and RP Jose Dominguez.

As a result of the trades SP Ken Waldichuk and RP Domingo Acevedo (pending waivers) were sent to AAA.

Top prospects 1b Tyler Soderstrom and RF Alfonso Cortez were called up to the majors.

Draft class and updated depth chart included.

The A's playoff hopes came down to the wire. They not only needed to defeat the Angels in the last game of the season but also needed the Rays to lose. To put both teams in a tie for the final Wild Card spot.

The A's beat the Angels 7-4 off of two homer days from Shea Langeliers and Tyler Soderstrom.

Later that night the Blue Jays defeated Rays to leave both Tampa and Oakland tied at 88 wins.

Meaning the A's will be taking on division rival Houston in the first round of the playoffs.

(Side note, I'm not sure how tiebreakers are supposed to work. I thought it went by head-to-head record but we went 2-4 against Tampa)

3b Matt Chapman led the A's is position player WAR with 8.2.

RP Griffing Canning led the A's pitchers with 2.8 WAR

RP Griffing Jax had 2.9 for the season but much of that came from his time in Minnesota prior to the trade deadline.

Chapman led the AL in hits with 196 and was second in batting average at .333. he also finished second in doubles with 45.

Esteury Ruiz led the AL in steals with 34.

Michael Lorenzen tied for the AL lead with 3 complete game shutouts.

As a team Oakland ended the year 5th in runs scored at 786.

They had another strong year on defense, finishing tied for third in the league with a .989 fielding percentage with only 65 errors.

The pitching staff still struggled, giving up 760 runs for 22nd in the league. They also were prone to the long ball, giving up 206 homers, the 6th most in baseball.

The bullpen also blew 19 saves for 14th in MLB.

A positive note was their ability to strike batters out, finishing with the 8th most k's.

Some individual players of note.

SP Jack Flaherty finished with a solid season of 2.2 WAR and 3.80 ERA. His best season since 2019.

The A's other deadline addition to their rotation did not fair as well as Sixto Sanchez continued to struggle in Oakland and finished the year with just 0.2 WAR and a 5.64 ERA.

RP Griffin Jax was lights out with 1.18 ERA across 91 innings. And Andres Munoz was solid with 3.33 ERA.

Rookies 1b Tyler Soderstrom and RF Alfonso Cortez had very different freshmen years after their late call-ups.

Soderstrom excelled as the long end of a platoon with Garrett Cooper, hitting 288/352/417 in 132 abs. (0.9 WAR)

Cortez struggling with an abysmal line of 190/233/230 in 126 abs. (-0.9 WAR) and was benched for Clark Elliot at the end of year. Cortez was kept on the playoff roster for his speed and defense.

The biggest surprise of the year came from 2019 1st round pick SS Logan Davidson who started the year as the short end of a platoon with Darell Hernaiz but took over the full time reigns with a strong offensive season hitting 15 homers and 287/337/496 (2.4 WAR)

His 14 errors hurt, but something the A's can live with if he continues hit like this.

Combined with good seasons from C Shea Langeliers (3.4 WAR) and CF Esteury Ruiz (3.5 WAR) Oakland has a solid young core up the middle.

The teams strength up the middle would have been even more impressive but 2b Gleyber Torres struggled in the first year of his big free agent contract, hitting just 235/323/364.

I forgot to mention late off-season pickup Max Muncy had a tremendous year, putting up 7 WAR and 36 homers

I would break down my question into these categories:

In between players
Old players

Position Players
Pitchers

How long to focus on any one group of attributes?

Good question my Pirates have pretty poor hitting stats so I basically moved all of them to batting cages or whatever is the hitting training. I dont know if I should keep it there or change it up.

I just set it to auto. I don't think it matters all that much.

A's Upset Astros in Game 1 Rout

The A's took game 1 of the AL Wild Card series over the heavily favored Astros 10-0.

Jack Flaherty proved to be the ace the A's were hoping for after his trade, giving up just 2 hits over 7 innings while striking out 12 in a dominant performance.

The A's showed off their muscle, slugging 5 home runs. Brent Rooker started off the scoring with a massive 2 run blast off Cristian Javier in the 1st that cleared the stands at Minute Made Park, traveling an estimated 445 ft.

Veteran Max Muncy added two of his own and rookie Clark Elliot hit two of his own, plus two more singles to go 4-4 in his playoff debut.

Game 2 is tomorrow in Houston at 7:05 with Oakland's Griffin Canning taking on Houston's Framber Valdez.

Rays Acquire Josh Bell

The Pittsburgh Pirates end July with a 15-9 record in the month. Which was much better than their 10-16 record in June. Overall they were 5-1-1 in their series in the month.

After the all star break, Pittsburgh finished the month with sereies vs. the Giants, Guardians, Angles, Padres and Phillies. Each series saw Pittsburgh face off against teams with a better record than them. Yet despite the hower tiered opponents, Pittsburgh went 9-6 to end the month.

Game one versus the Phillies saw Pittsburgh give up the early 2-0 lead to eventually lose 4-3.

Game two saw Pittsburgh nearly spoil a solid first start for Domingo German but they were able to take the victory in extras thanks to a multi inning clinic that was put on David Bednar.

Game three was a back and fourth affair as the game saw the Pirates come back from down an early 2-0 deficit. Despite their efforts, they were unable to take the victory as the game went to extra innings yet again that eventually saw JT Realmuto's 10th inning rbi be the deciding factor.

The Pirates head into August with a slim (but important) 1.5 lead over the Brewers. The lead is important as it seems that the only one to make the playoffs out of the division will be the winner.

Pittsburgh will start the month of August with a three game set Vs. The Detroit Tigers (48-58/3rd AL Central).

The rich get richer

The Padres were obviously upset after their late July sweep by the hands of the Pirates. As with the trade deadline closing in, they made one of the biggest acquisitions of the year. San Diego acquired the services of Joey Votto (39 YO 73 OVR A POT) in exchange for a potential prospect in Korry Howell (24 YO CF 68 OVR C POT). Votto leaves behind a sixteen year career in Cincinnati in hopes of getting a ring to end his career.

2023 Washington Nationals

The start of September means two additional roster spots, and the Nationals have elected to call up RP Sean Doolittle for veteran and left handed relief in the bullpen, and OF Donovan Casey, who played over 100 games in 2022 at the MLB level and showed some positive signs, but lost his role due to the free agent signings in the offseason. There will be further moves in the coming days, as both SP Jackson Rutledge and 1B Drew Mendoza will be coming off the IL in a week or so.

Game One: Aaron Nola (14-6, 2.46) vs Stephen Strasburg (12-7, 2.21)
The Nationals took the lead in the first following a single from Yadiel Hernandez and a double off the wall by Joey Meneses. Brandon Nimmo and Keibert Ruiz would repeat this situation in the second to make it 2-0, but Atlanta responded in the third with a sac fly from Ronald Acuña Jr and back to back home runs by Dansby Swanson and Ozzie Albies in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Albies would be the game-changer in this one, killing a rally in the seventh with a fantastic double play and then breaking the game open in the eighth with a two run double. The Nationals had no answers against Raisel Iglesias and AJ Minter and lose the first game of the series.

Game Two: Spencer Strider (11-8, 3.48) vs MacKenzie Gore (9-9, 3.82)
The Braves scored in the first when Wil Myers doubled to drive in Ronald Acuna Jr. They then got home runs from Matt Olson in the sixth and Ronald Acuna Jr in the seventh, as well as an RBI double from Acuna in the eighth. Colin Poche would give up a two run home run to Austin Riley in the ninth, in his second inning of work. The Nationals would get two runs in the bottom of the ninth when Andrew Vaughn hit a home run, but that was all the offense they could put together and Atlanta took another one from Washington.

Game Three: Kyle Wright (11-8, 3.94) vs Josiah Gray (8-12, 2.84)
Atlanta once again jumped on the Nationals when William Contreras hit a two run single in the first, but Washington responded by scoring four in the bottom half: Brady House walked, Andrew Vaughn doubled, and then Yadiel Hernandez and Joey Meneses walked to bring in House, Gleyber Torres hit a two run single, Brandon Nimmo singled, and Keibert Ruiz bounced into a double play but a fourth run would score. Kyle Wright would need 32 pitches to get through the first; but the Braves offense would give him extra support by putting up a four spot in the top of the second, three runs scoring on a home run from Ronald Acuna. Michael Harris continued the scoring with a home run to start the third, and he would homer again, this time a two run shot, in the fifth. Harris would hit his third home run, another two run bomb, in the seventh, and Matt Olson added a two run homer of his own in the ninth to make this game a laugher. Washington finally got their fifth run in the ninth, but it was way too little too late.

The Nationals are back to .500, and will have a day off before heading out west to face the Angels, A’s and Padres.

Astros Tie Series at 1-1

The Astros recovered from their 10-0 loss by shutting down the A's offense in a 5-2 win.

Framber Valdez was scattered 8 hits across his 8 innings with the only runs against him coming on a 2 run homer in the 6th from Oakland's Gleyber Torres.

The A's Griffin Canning shut down the Astros for 3 innings before giving up a 2 run shot to Eugenio Suarez in the 4th.

Canning was shaky in the 5th giving up another run and only getting one more out before being replaced by Zach Jackson.

Jackson struggled with command, walking two and allowing both to score.

The winner-take-all game 3 is tomorrow with the A's Michael Lorenzen taking on Houston's Luis Garcia at 7:05.

The Mets are starting to get the train back on the tracks on their season, going 6-4 in their last ten, unfortunately the Phillies and Braves have gone 7-3 in that same time frame. I put Vogelbach, David Robertson, and Adam Ottavino on the trade block and got offers from the Twins, Yankees, and Dodgers so I was able to move them for three relievers that fit the pitch selections I'm looking for. We're in the middle of s seven game stretch against the Nationals and Royals and we need to at worst go 5-2.

During the final game with the Nationals they put on a clinic on how not to play defense

Prescott, AZ (AP) - The woes for the Hops continue as they drop three of four to last place Prescott to open their road trip. Familiar woes continue to haunt this team as the offense has gone cold and the pitching is suddenly suspect as we edge toward the trade deadline.

The Hops losing streak hit six games on Thursday evening as they dropped the opener of a four game series in Prescott by a score of 5-2. Newly acquired Michael McGill went 3 for 4 with a double and scored twice to help the Hot Shots to the victory.

Flagstaff would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a Josh Ortega RBI double and Skyler Lyons sacrifice fly.

Caesar Zambrano would tie it up in the fourth with a two-out, two-run double. The Hot Shots would take the lead in the fifth on a Matt Olson solo home run, his 20th on the season. A Knapp RBI single in the seventh moved the Hot Shots in front by two and a Noah Wilson RBI double in the eighth made it 5-2.

Dave Powers (7-4) earned the victory pitching six innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four. The bullpen pitched three scoreless and hitless innings with Xavier Doyle earning his third save.

Juro Yamgushi (8-6) was saddled with the loss, lasting only 4 2/3 innings. He gave up three runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking five.

On Friday night the Hot Shots pounded out 17 hits as they cruised to an 11-3 victory, sending the Hops to a season high seventh consecutive loss. Noah Wilson went 4 for 4 with a home run and scored four runs for the Hot Shots.

Prescott would grab a 3-0 lead in the second on a Dave Burnett RBI single and Kevin Tincher two-run double.

The Hops would tie it up at 3-3 in the top of the fourth on a Josh Ortega sacrifice fly, a Robbie Westbrook RBI ground out and an Oscar Aleman solo home run. But that would be it for the Hops.

Prescott got two back in the bottom of the fourth on an Alexis Lerma RBI single and Kevin Tincher RBI single. From that point the Hot Shots would cruise to the victory. Lerma would add an RBI double in the sixth and Tincher a two-run single to make it 8-3. Khris Kovach hit a two-run home run in the eighth to put a cap on the proceedings.

Kelly Wolf (12-6) was credited with the win for Prescott. He pitched six innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Arturo Velasquez pitched the final three innings to earn his first save.

Alex Farmer (9-5) took the loss, lasting only five innings and allowing six runs on 11 hits. Sam Varela then got rocked out of the bullpen, allowing two runs on three hits without recording an out. Aldo Osuna wasn’t much better, allowing three runs on three hits.

Emmitt Hampton went 3 for 4 with a double in the loss.

The Hops ended their season high seven game losing streak on Saturday evening with a 9-6 victory. The Hops knocked out 18 hits to break out of their offensive slump.

Robbie Westbrook got the Hops on the board with an RBI single in the first inning. Khris Kovach would get that back in the bottom half with an RBI single of his own.

Flagstaff retook the lead in the fourth with an RBI single from Donnie Roland and RBI double from Art Mason to go up 3-1.

But Prescott responded by scoring four times off of Russell Fluty. Khris Kovach homered off the left field foul pole, then Dave Burnett singled home Noah Wilson and Michael McGill hit a two-run home run to put the Hot Shots up 5-3.

Flagstaff would tie it up in the sixth on solo home runs from Roberto Geronimo and Forrest Owen. Josh Ortega would hit his league leading 30th home run in the top of the seventh to put the Hops up 6-5. An unearned run in the eighth, thanks to a throwing error from Khris Kovach put the Hops up 7-5. Kovach would get that run back with his second home run of the game, a solo shot, in the bottom of the inning to pull the Hot Shots to within one run.

Robbie Westbrook would hit a big two-run home run in the top of the ninth, his 25th on the season, to seal it.

Vic Miller worked a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his 32nd save and put an end to the Hops losing streak. They will look for a series split on Sunday afternoon in the series finale.

Russell Fluty, in two starts, has struggled since being called up and has an ERA of 13.50 in just eight innings of work.

In the finale, the Hot Shots pulled out a 2-1 victory in a game that featured just seven hits and three solo home runs. Cesar Zambrano and Josh Carroll homered for the home side as they won three of four from the first place Hops.

Flagstaff would grab the lead in the third inning on a solo home run from Donnie Roland. They would manage just one other hit in the ballgame, an Oscar Aleman single.

Meanwhile, Prescott would tie the game up in the fourth on a Cesar Zambrano home run, just his fourth on the season. The Hot Shots would take the lead in the sixth on a Josh Carroll solo home run, his tenth.

Six Prescott pitchers combined to hold the Hops to just two hits, striking out 15 batters and giving up just one walk.

Shoe-Lace O’Tying (9-7) tossed a complete game, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out nine and walking one.

The Hops will next head to Utah to take on St. George (54-53) for a four game series starting on Monday evening.

Around the League: Gilbert reliever Rocco Minton was hit in the head by a line drive and had to leave the game, but the Barnstormers were able to hold on a defeat Santa Fe 2-1.

Carl Lentzkow hit a walk off solo home run as the Chiefs defeated Goodyear 4-3 to maintain their 2 1/2 game lead atop the DL East. Ryan Meger homered twice and drove in three to help Mesa to their thirteenth consecutive win, a 5-2 victory over Phoenix

Glendale pounded out 17 hits, including four home runs, as they crushed Salt River 17-5 to remain atop the DL Central. Scottsdale’s Rickie Blake (9-7) allowed just one hit over eight innings, a solo home run to Jamie Case, striking out ten, as the Scorpions defeated the Snow Sox 5-1.

Phoenix hit five home runs, including two by Jeff Jankowitsch, as they ended Mesa’s 13-game winning streak with a 9-6 victory at Meta Park.

Roswell hit six home runs in a 23 hit attack as they clobbered St George 19-4. The Aliens scored 11 runs in the top of the ninth inning off of four Archer pitchers.

Steve Willis (6-11) struck out 11 in seven innings of work as Long Beach defeated San Diego 5-3.
