He hasn't hit a home run since I posted last I believe he's had a single or two, and one double, and that's all. A few walks worked in, and more than a few K's. All in all, I'm loving it.

      2024 Washington Nationals

Game One: Cade Cavalli (0-2, 5.44) vs Alex Wood (2-2, 3.64)
Raimel Tapia, one of the Giants’ biggest offensive threats, had to leave the game after diving for a ball in the third.* The Giants would take the lead on a three run home run from Austin Slater in the third, but Washington would start a rally in the fifth when Luis Garcia hit a two run home run into McCovey Cove. The Nats would then load the bases with still nobody out, but Andrew Vaughn flew out to right and Franklin Labour made a perfect throw to home to get Wilmer Perez, who tagged up and attempted to tie the game. Anthony Rizzo would strike out to end the threat. That would be the only scoring for either club in this game, and the Giants take a series opening victory.

*Raimel Tapia has a fractured arm and will miss 1-2 months.

Game Two: MacKenzie Gore (4-2, 5.98) vs Kyle Harrison (1-0, 1.46)
Brandon Nimmo led the game off with a double, and scored on a line drive from Brandon Drury, but San Francisco would tie the game in the third with a base hit from Garett Stubbs. The Giants then took the lead in the sixth on a sac fly from JD Davis. Hunter Harvey would come in from the bullpen, and hit Eli White with the bases loaded and a 1-2 count. That would close the book on MacKenzie who gave up the three runs on six hits, walking three and striking out eight in 5.2 innings. The Giants once again relied on their bullpen, using both rookies (Cole Waites) and veterans (Taylor Rogers and Liam Hendricks) to get the win.

Game Three: Lucas Giolito (3-4, 4.96) vs Carlos Rodon (4-5, 3.31)

Fun Fact: This game is the fifth game in a row that the Nationals face a left handed starter.

Will Wilson hit a solo home run in the first to put SF on top, but CJ Abrams would tie the game with his second home run of the year in the top of the third. The Nats would take the lead in the sixth; CJ Abrams led off with a double and scored on a double from Kike Hernandez, who would advance to third on a wild pitch and score on a sac fly from Andrew Vaughn. Lucas Giolito would have to leave the game after throwing four pitches in the bottom of the inning with what appears to be a hamstring injury*. Giolito was fantastic in the five innings he pitched, giving up just one run in three hits, walking one and striking out seven. Carlos Rodon would leave after six innings, giving up three runs on four hits, also walking one and striking out seven. Camilo Doval would come in and give up a solo home run to Mitch Haniger, who had seemed to be cooling off as of late. The Giants would get one run off Victor Arano in the eighth, but Aaron Bummer and Trevor Rosenthal would shut down the offense and prevent the sweep.

*The MRI in Lucas Giolito came back negative, so he should be good to go for his next start, but may be switched out for Josiah Gray or Zach Davies depending on availability.

Washington (29-26) now has to fly back across the country to take on the Dodgers (35-20) in a four game series.

Cardinals swept in 2 game series by Royals

The Cardinals (23-20) were swept in Kansas City by the Royals in a mini two game series.

The two games were a pitching duel with the two teams combining to score 4 runs total for the series. The Royals won on Tuesday 2-1, and then on Wednesday 1-0. The only bright spot offensively for the Cardinals was Tommy Edman recording 3 hits in the series and 3 stolen bases.

Next up after a Thursday off day, is a 3 game weekend series with the Rockies.

Cardinals take 2 of 3 from Rockies in St.Louis

The Cardinals (25-21) took two games of a three-game series against the Rockies over the weekend in St.Louis. The Cardinals still find themselves 1.5 games behind the Pirates for the NL Central. And yes, the Pirates have a pretty good team this year.

The Cardinals won on Friday night as Zach Thompson got the win in relief of Matthew Liberatore who left the game in the 4th inning with a broken nail. Thompson got thru 3 innings of work giving up no runs on just 2 hits, as the Cardinals beat the Rockies 5-1. Nolan Arenado provided the offense driving in 3 of the 5 runs on 3 hits, including 2 doubles.

On Saturday it was the return of an issue that continues to plague this team, as the Cardinals couldn't drive in runs. The Cards left 12 runners on base in a 3-1 loss to the Rockies. Dakota Hudson was good getting thru 6 innings, but had no support from the bats.

Sunday the Cardinals weren't much better at driving in runs, but Jack Flaherty was absolutely masterful going 8 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits with 14 strikeouts. At one point, Flaherty struck out 8 in a row. The offense provided just enough support in the 4-1 win thanks to Nolan Gorman's 3 run double in the 7th to break a 1-1 tie.

The Cardinals remain home as the Astros come to town.

              2024 Pittsburgh Pirates 04/08-04/10

Overall Record:10-2 (1st NL Central/1.0 over Milwaukee Brewers)

              Game Results

              Game 1
              Pirates-5
              Diamondbacks-3

              Game 2
              Pirates-2
              Diamondbacks-0

              Game 3
              Pirates-6
              Diamondbacks-2

Pirates sweep Diamondbacks and maintain MLB best record

The Pirates are off to a hot start. A lot of that has to do with their pitching and some key offensive players who have come up big. Through twelve games in 2024 the Pirates have allowed just twenty-seven runs which is the best in the league which also makes their team ERA the best in the league at 1.98.

CJ Cron is looking like the best offensive pickup of the offseason as he too is off to a hot start with his .458 average, 5 homeruns and 9 rbis. Gary Sanchez on the other hand still does not have a hit on the season although he is playing in the role as the backup catcher and has had limited chances.

The Pirates did sweep the Diamondbacks but games one and two took all nine innings to get that win. Game one went into that final inning tied 3-3 before the Pirates were able to load the bases and eventually get two runs in while David Bednar collected his 3rd save of the season in the 5-3 victory.

Game two was tied 0-0 headed into the 9th after Julio Urias and Merrill Kelly battled it out. In tht 9th, CJ Cron hit his 5th homer of the season, Buddy Kennedy hit a triple and Temarr Johnson knocked Kennedy in with a perfect bunt single. Bednar also closed this game for the 2-0 victory and his 4th on the year.

Game three saw Arizona take their first lead of the series in the first inning off of Lourdes Gurriel JR rbi single in the first inning. Pittsburgh countered that in the second and didnt look back past that point, taking the lead and the eventual win 6-2.

The Pirates now head home for an early season look at who may rule the Central as the Brewers come to town just one game back at 9-3. Game 1 looks to be Roansy Contreras (Pirates) Vs. Brandon Woodruff (Brewers).

                Cardinals avoid sweep against Astros

The Cardinals (26-23) avoided being swept by the Astros by winning Wednesday's series finale in St.Louis. The Cardinals were once again hampered by their inability to score runs. The Cardinals scored 1 run in each of the first two games, but bounced back with a 6 run outburst on Wednesday.

Copper Hjerpe and Jameson Taillon each took losses despite pitching extremely well. Neither gave up more than 3 runs and both went 7 innings in their respective starts. Matthew Liberatore got the win Wednesday despite going just 5 innings and giving up 3 runs.

The Cardinals are off on Thursday as they travel to Texas for a 3 game weekend series with the Rangers.

                  Cardinals take two in Texas

The Cardinals (28-24) took 2 games of their 3 game series with the Rangers in Arlington over the weekend. The Cardinals still find themselves 1.5 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central.

The won the first two games of the series but were unable to complete the sweep as the Rangers won on Sunday. Nolan Arenado and Dylan Carlson were great with the bats with each recording 6 hits in the series including a homerun for each. Arenado now leads the National League with 40 RBIs on the season thus far.

Dakota Hudson and Jack Flaherty both got wins in their starts, while Copper Hjerpe was rocked to the tune of 8 runs on 9 hits in just 2 innings of work. Silver lining of Sunday's game was Zach Thompson throwing 5 perfect innings out of the bullpen.

The Cardinals will now travel to Arizona for a 3 game series with the Diamondbacks.

Pirates avoid sweep but relinquish Central lead

The Pirates and Brewers entered their first season series as two of the hottest teams in the MLB early on in 2024. Although it was an early season matchup, it gave both teams a chance to make a statement for both the league as a whole and the Central division.

The Brewers were the ones who made that statement as they beat Pittsburgh three to one in the series.

Game one saw something that unfortunately is becoming the norm. Roansy Contreras was fantastic in his start (7.2 IP 1 R 6 SO) but his offense could once again not backup his performance as they managed just two hits and no runs in the 1-0 loss. The problem has been continued from 2023, a season in which Roansy lost 15 games despite his 2.97 ERA and a second best AL stat of 224 strike outs. Roansy hasnt expressed frustration publicly but we are sure he would love some more run support.

Pittsburgh did avoid the sweep with a game three victory, 3-1.

Despite their first series loss, Pittsburgh is still looking good in the first month of the season and will look to continue that as they stay home to faceoff against the San Francisco Giants (10-6/2nd NL West 1.5 behind LA Dodgers).

                      MLDS: FLAGSTAFF vs. AUSTIN
                      (Flagstaff wins series 3-0)

                      <img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53142814689_153d89f514_o.jpg" width="720" height="405" alt="MLDS_Game1_23"/>
David Benitez’s three-run home run late in game one turned the series.

                      October 6: Hops 4, Fire Frogs 2
                      October 7: Hops 2, Fire Frogs 0
                      October 9: Hops 2, Fire Frogs 1

After dropping all six games to Austin in the regular season, the Flagstaff Hops swept the eastern division champion Austin Fire Frogs in the MLDS to move onto the MLCS.

Flagstaff opened up their Mountain League Divisional Series with a dramatic 4-2 victory over Austin. David Benitez hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eight to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead and the Hops would hang on to take the opener of this five game series. The Hops lost all six regular season games to Austin.

Austin would grab a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo home run from Rick Singleton off of Shoe-Lace O’Tying. They would double that lead in the fourth on a Luke Jordan solo home run.

The Hops would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a Robbie Westbrook solo home run off of Sam Herzog, the former Hops pitcher. It was the first hot of the game for Flagstaff.

Herzog would pitch seven innings, allowing just that one run and he only allowed two hits. He struck out eight and did not issue a walk. Reliever Tom Wong came on and gave up back-to-back singles to Roberto Geronimo and Oscar Aleman before serving up the game winning home run to David Benitez.

Vic Miller came on and struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save.

Shoe-Lace O’Tying (1-0) picked up the win, tossing eight innings and allowing two runs on just four hits. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.

On Saturday evening, Ryan Pressley tossed a gem and the Flagstaff Hops grabbed a 2-0 series lead with a 2-0 victory over the Fire Frogs. Two sacrifice flies in the second inning were all the scoring that they Hops would need as they are on the verge of an MLCS appearance.

Sacrifice flies from Roberto Geronimo and Oscar Aleman put the Hops up 2-0 in the second inning after an Art Mason single and Emmitt Hampton double. That was all that Ryan Pressley would need.

Pressley (1-0) was dominant, tossing seven innings and allowing just two hits, while striking out six and not issuing any walks. He threw 97 pitches before giving way to the bullpen. Also Osuna pitched the eight and Vic Miller tight-roped out of the ninth to pick up his second save. He walked Martinez and gave up a single to Rick Singleton. But he got Hulk Hoagie to bounce in to a 5-4-3 double play to end the game and put the Hops in position to close out the series on Monday night in Austin.

In Sunday afternoon’s game three, it was the Juro Yamaguchi show. The high priced free agent that underperformed most of the season came through when it mattered the most, tossing eight shutout innings and allowing just two hits while striking out ten as the Hops completed the sweep with a 2-1 victory.

Flagstaff would grab a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth on a solo home run from Donnie Roland off of Pat Eveland. Eveland went (17-4) in the regular season and pitched well in this one, allowing just one run on four hits in six innings of work. Reliever Tom Wong once again struggled. After allowing three runs in game one while getting no outs, Wong allowed a leadoff solo home run to Forrest Owen in the eighth. That run proved to be critical.

Vic Miller would come on in the ninth and struck out the first two batters that he faced before Rick Singleton homered to left, his second of the series, to cut the lead to 2-1. But Miller would get Hulk Hoagie to fly out to center to end it and send Flagstaff onto the MLCS for the first time. Miller picked up the save in all three games.

Flagstaff managed just 15 hits in the series, a three game sweep. But they totally tied up Austin, allowing just three runs and ten hits in the three games. The Hops will now face the winner of El Paso and Rio Rancho for a shot at the Mountain League pennant. That series will begin on Saturday night.

Juro Yamaguchi was dominant in the series clinching victory, allowing no runs and striking out ten.

Cardinals take series against Diamondbacks in the desert

The Cardinals (30-25) took the 3 game series against the Diamondbacks in Arizona. The Cardinals are still 2 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central.

The Cardinals were shutout Monday night but were to come from behind and win on Tuesday night and hung on to win Wednesday afternoon. Nolan Arenado continues to swing a hot bat earning 5 hits in the series with 3 walks and 4 RBIs. Oswald Peraza was also a contributor on offense driving in 4 runs in just two games played.

The Cardinals will remain home as the Cubs come to town for a 3 game weekend series.

Cardinals embarassed by Cubs in St.Louis

The Cardinals (31-27) were embarrassed by the Cubs at Busch Stadium in their 3 game series. The somehow managed to win one game and find themselves still 2 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central.

The Cardinals were outscored 16-2 in the series, being shut out 5-0 on Friday night and then 10-0 on Sunday. The Cardinals managed to get 2 runs across the plate on Saturday in a 2-1 win.

Nothing really to discuss other than this team needs something to jolt it. They need another starting pitcher, even when Reid Detmers returns in a few weeks. They need help offensively, most notably at catcher and left field. Tyler O'Neill is hitting .136 with 5 home runs and 11 RBIs and he bats 5th in the lineup. He leads the majors with 81 strikeouts (its June 1st) and is striking out in nearly 40% of his at-bats.

This month the Cardinals will really start to scan the trade market for help, as waiting until the deadline could be too late. Thankfully, no one is the Central has really caught fire and put distance between themselves and the rest of the division.

Next up is a 3 game homestand with the Mariners.

                            DLDS: HENDERSON vs. SCOTTSDALE
                            (Henderson wins series 3-0)

                            October 7: Silver Knights 6, Scorpions 4
                            October 8: Silver Knights 5, Scorpions 4 (11)
                            October 10: Silver Knights 3, Scorpions 2

Henderson swept Scottsdale thanks to two late come-from-behind victories to advance to the DLCS.
Henderson grabbed game one of their DLDS series with a 6-4 victory over Scottsdale. Sean Pressley went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Nino Soriano picked up the win, tossing five innings as the Silver Knights made their playoff debut.

Henderson grabbed a commanding 2-0 series lead over Scottsdale with a 5-4 extra-inning walk off victory on Saturday night. Sean Pressley lined a one-out RBI double into the right field corner that scored Bradley York with the game winning run. Enos Webb added a two-run home run for the Silver Knights in the bottom of the first inning.

Scottsdale had tied the game up with single runs in the top of the eighth and ninth innings. Tanner Bell hit a solo home run in the eighth with two outs to pull the Scorpions to within one, then Rudy Powell tied it up in the ninth with a solo shot off of Irwin Strawberry. Strawberry (1-0) would toss three innings for the Silver Knights and picked up the victory.

On Tuesday afternoon, Henderson rallied with three runs in the top of the ninth, all with two outs, to defeat Scottsdale 3-2 to complete the three game sweep of their DLDS series.

Scottsdale’s Billy Cooper carried a no hitter into the ninth inning. But then things fell apart. Bradley York singled to left to open the inning and Cooper was lifted for closer Charles Sato. Sato got Cal Ruiz to strike out. Jacob Martin singled to right. Sean Pressley would fly out to left for the second out. Alfonso Pacheco would then line a ball into the left-centerfield gap for a bases clearing triple to tie the game at 2-2. Albert Zambrano then followed that up with a double to left to put the Silver Knights up 3-2.

Henderson then brought on rookie Hernandez out of the bullpen and he sent the Scorpions down in order to end their season and send the Silver Knights onto the DLCS.

Cardinals take series from Mariners in St.Louis

The Cardinals (33-28) bounced back and took two games of their three-game series with the Mariners in St.Louis. The Cardinals are now just 1 game back of the Brewers.

After not being able to produce runs in the Cubs series, the Cardinals scored 14 runs in the first two games of the series against the Mariners, winning both games. Nolan Arenado continues to swing a hot bat as he hit 2 homeruns and drove in 5 runs in the first two games before getting an off day on Wednesday. Wednesday the Cards couldn't get the bats going losing 4-1 to the Mariners.

The Cardinals will remain at home as they welcome the Phillies to Busch Stadium for a 3 game weekend series.

                                Cardinals win series against Phillies

The Cardinals (35-29) won their second series in a row this time taking 2 of 3 from the Phillies in St.Louis over the weekend. The Cardinals now find themselves within a half-game of the Brewers for the division lead.

The Cardinals started off Friday with a bang putting up 12 runs on 11 hits with 5 homeruns. Nolan Gorman hit 3 of the 5 homeruns in route to a 4 for 4 day that included 7 RBIs. Brendan Donovan snapped out of his funk with a 3 hit day including his first homerun of the season.

Saturday was a closer game, and one that will have a major impact on the Cardinals for the rest of the season. The Cardinals won the game 3-1 thanks to Oswald Peraza's 2 run double in the 7th inning to break a one to one tie. But as mentioned this game will have a major impact on the rest of the season for the Cardinals as Nolan Arenado left the game and will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. More below.

Sunday was a day that the team seemingly had no fight after the injury as they took it on the chin 8-0.

The Cardinals will now travel to Cincinnati for a 3 game series with the Reds to start the week.

Nolan Arenado done for the year with torn ACL

Nolan Arenado is done for the year after tearing his ACL on Saturday against the Phillies. Arenado was ranging towards short to get to a ball in the game when the injury happened in the 5th inning. The injury looked bad on the field but the staff held out hope, but the reality is what they expected, torn ACL, done for the season.

Arenado was the leading vote getter to start at 3rd base for the National League in the All Star Game in San Francisco this July. Arenado was hitting .283 with 18 homeruns and 53 RBIs before the injury. And with 2027 being the final year of his contract, and now this injury, its likely that Arenado has played his final game in a Cardinals uniform whether he retires or not this winter.

The Cardinals recalled Alec Burleson from Memphis to fill the vacant roster spot. Its expected Oswald Peraza will take over at 3rd base, Brendan Donovan will move from DH to 2nd base, and Alec Burleson will be the new DH. Jordan Walker could figure into the mix, but his struggles at the plate will likely keep him in a reserve role.

Huge blow to a team that hasn't been playing its best this year and now just lost its most consistent offensive threat.
