MLB Draft 2024
The Washington Nationals draft this year was a little different compared to previous years, as they were picking 22nd due to their great 2023 season. They were able to get some pretty decent players, however, including a homegrown talent that could make a splash in the future. Here are the picks for 2024:
1) Edgar De La Rosa: a 19 year old second baseman from Panama. Good contact, decent fielding and speed. He has a 72 overall rating and 74 potential.
2) Darin Guevara: a 21 year old right handed starter from Canada. Nothing really stand outs with him, although he does have some nasty break on his curveball and slider. A 71 overall with a 75 potential.
3) Francisco Herrera: A 23 year old first baseman from New York that has great contact ability, combined with plate discipline. The downside is a lack of power and fielding ability, even though he also saw time as a catcher. A 58 overall but 78 potential.
4) Ray Shelton: He might be the most exciting pick in the Nationals' draft. A 21 right handed reliever from DC. His key pitch is a sweeping curve with great break. A 66 overall but potential for an 89.
5) Abraham Urbina: An 18 year old shortstop from California. He will be a project, low contact, an inaccurate arm, and poor plate discipline, but some power and speed. A 60 overall with a 73 potential.
6) Vernon Morales: A 21 year old right handed reliever from Pennsylvania, good velocity and break with the ability to get strikeouts, if he can control his pitches. A 64 overall with a 60 potential, probably not a major league player.
The Nationals did not get a major talent this year, unlike the past two years where they were able to get a high pick and found some great pitching talent (Felipe Escalona in 2022 and Tommy Chung in 2023, along with a steal in Hubert Brito in the fifth round of 2023), but there are some players that may be able to help the team in the years to come.
