    2024 Washington Nationals

    MLB Draft 2024

The Washington Nationals draft this year was a little different compared to previous years, as they were picking 22nd due to their great 2023 season. They were able to get some pretty decent players, however, including a homegrown talent that could make a splash in the future. Here are the picks for 2024:

    1) Edgar De La Rosa: a 19 year old second baseman from Panama. Good contact, decent fielding and speed. He has a 72 overall rating and 74 potential.

    2) Darin Guevara: a 21 year old right handed starter from Canada. Nothing really stand outs with him, although he does have some nasty break on his curveball and slider. A 71 overall with a 75 potential.

    3) Francisco Herrera: A 23 year old first baseman from New York that has great contact ability, combined with plate discipline. The downside is a lack of power and fielding ability, even though he also saw time as a catcher. A 58 overall but 78 potential.

    4) Ray Shelton: He might be the most exciting pick in the Nationals' draft. A 21 right handed reliever from DC. His key pitch is a sweeping curve with great break. A 66 overall but potential for an 89.

    5) Abraham Urbina: An 18 year old shortstop from California. He will be a project, low contact, an inaccurate arm, and poor plate discipline, but some power and speed. A 60 overall with a 73 potential.

    6) Vernon Morales: A 21 year old right handed reliever from Pennsylvania, good velocity and break with the ability to get strikeouts, if he can control his pitches. A 64 overall with a 60 potential, probably not a major league player.

The Nationals did not get a major talent this year, unlike the past two years where they were able to get a high pick and found some great pitching talent (Felipe Escalona in 2022 and Tommy Chung in 2023, along with a steal in Hubert Brito in the fifth round of 2023), but there are some players that may be able to help the team in the years to come.

Pirates sweep athletics to take Central lead back

It wasnt excactly pretty but the Pirates got a three game sweep in Oakland. The offense wasnt very good but did manage enough runs in each game. Games one and two were won by the score of 3-0 thanks to strong 8 inning peformances by both Mitch Keller and Luis Urias. Keller's being the better of the two as he allowed just two hits and struck out 11, A Pirate season high.

The Athletics Paul Blackburn also had himself a great game two as he almost got a no hitter (8 IP 1 H,1 BB, 2 SO). The Pirates were however able to get to the A's bullpen in the 9th inning to score their three runs for the game.

The A's led game three 2-1 late into the game but a strong 8th inning a two run Endy Rodriguez double led to the Pirates taking the 5-2 victory.

David Bednar saved all three games and now sits at 8 on the year.

The Pirates now travel to San Diego to take on the Padres (12-10/3rd NL West)

            Cardinals sweep Pirates in St.Louis

The Cardinals (48-35) swept the Pirates in a 3 game series for their final home stand before the All-Star Break. The Cardinals have now expanded their division lead to 6 games over the Reds and Brewers.

Pitching was the dominant factor of this series as the Cards staff allowed a total of 5 runs in the 3 games, which is a good thing because the bats were dormant in the series. The Cardinals did get production from Dylan Carlson who now holds a 10 game hitting streak.

Next up the Cardinals will travel to San Diego for a 4 game series with the Padres before travelling to Colorado to close out the first half of the season.

Game 1 NLDS - Cardinals vs Mets

Jordan Montgomery would pitch well and take a 4-3 Cardinals lead into the 6th inning with O'Neill smashing 2 home runs and Jordan Walker smashing his 3rd home run of the post season.

Too bad the third Jordan wouldn't do as well as Jordan Hicks would give up a tying run and we would head into extra innings where the Mets would score a run off Chris Stratton to win 5-4.

Game 2 will feature Miles Mikolas vs Justin Verlander (Mets lead, 1-0)

Tough loss to begin the series. Good luck in Game 2

Cardinals split series with Padres in San Diego

The Cardinals (50-37) split their 4 game series with the Padres at Petco Park. The Cardinals are still 6 games up in the division.

The Cardinals won Monday night and then again Thursday afternoon, but lost Tuesday and Wednesday. Nolan Gorman, Tyler O'Neill and Tommy Edman were the offensive standouts for the series with each recording at least 6 hits in the 4 game series. Matthew Liberatore had his second outstanding start in a row as he went just 6 innings, but he struck out 11 in those 6 innings giving up just 3 hits and one run. Zach Thompson continues to be an unexpected surprise out of the bullpen. He missed the Opening Day roster and was sent to Memphis at the start of the season, but since being recalled in May, he's been one of the most consistent arms in the bullpen. Thompson pitched 4 perfect innings in this series with 8 strikeouts.

The Cardinals will travel to Colorado for a 3 game weekend series with the Rockies to close out the first half of the season.

Beginning with a Tl;dr - Is Bruce Bochy and/or Joe Dillon (Nats hitting coordinator) in the game?

I downloaded a semi-current roster of players and wanted to sign Bruce Bochy as the new Padres manager and finally win a World Series with him at the helm, but when I looked at the Rangers staff, he wasn’t there.

My best friend since middle school in 2000 is also named Joe Dillon, but I looked at all the teams personnel and his name didn’t come up. That name DID come up in a previous franchise, however, so I was wondering if names get added as well as names retiring

Game 2 NLDS - Cardinals vs Mets (Mets lead, 1-0)

Miles Mikolas would right the ship from his last start vs the Phillies, allowing no runs, 3 hits, 5 k's and no walks in 7.1 innings. The bullpen would keep the shutout in tact and the Cardinals would score 3 runs on Mets starter Justin Verlander and 3 on their bullpen. Tyler O'Neill would hit his 4th homerun of the playoffs, a 2 run bomb off Verlander, which is all they would need.

Final score, Cardinals 6, Mets 0

The series is now tied as we shift the series back to St. Louis.

Scheduled starters, Jack Flahtery (1-0) vs David Peterson (0-0)

Cardinals take series in Colorado against the Rockies

The Cardinals (52-38) closed out the first half of the season with a series win against the Rockies in Colorado. The Cardinals still maintain a 6 game lead in the division.

The Cardinals outscored the Rockies 19-7 in the series, but still lost a game. Nolan Gorman and Tommy Edman swung the bats well during the series. Pitching was solid this series and Ryan Helsley earned his major league leading 31st save on Sunday.

The Cardinals will now head into the All-Star break and start scouring the trade block to see what moves can be made to position this team for a strong second half run.

Johnathan Mejia invited to the Futures Game

22 year old shortstop Johnathan Mejia was invited to the Futures Game this year in Miami. Mejia who is the starting shortstop for Springfield (AA) is hitting .289 with 5 homeruns, 21 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. While those numbers may not jump out at you, his biggest tool is his glovework.

Its expected that next season Mejia will be promoted to Memphis to be the starting shortstop and could earn an invite to big league Spring Training provided he has no major setbacks.

                            2024 Washington Nationals

Game One: David Peterson (4-2, 2.87) vs Josiah Gray (1-3, 6.04)

Josiah Gray gets the start to give Lucas Giolito extra time to rest after his injury scare during his last start.

Dom Smith hit a two run home run in the second that would prove to be the only runs scored in the game. Josiah Gray pitched well, going six innings on two runs, nine hits, no walks and two strikeouts. David Peterson was better, though. He went 7.2 innings, no runs, seven hits and two strikeouts. Both teams were aggressive at the plate but could not capitalize when they had runners on.

Game Two: Stephen Strasburg (5-3, 2.59) vs Andrew Heaney (2-7, 5.26)
The Mets took an immediate lead when Harrison Bader hit a leadoff home run, and they never looked back. Strasburg could not find the zone and when he did, he gave up plenty of solid contact. Luckily for him, most of it resulted in outs. Unluckily for him, he would have to leave in the fourth with a strained finger. Joan Adon would come in for long relief and do well, but Hunter Harvey would give up four runs in the eighth and the Nationals would only muster one run on two hits, with the run being an Anthony Rizzo solo home run. A very poor effort from Washington, and the only positive to take from this game is that Strasburg’s injury is not serious at all.

Game Three: Tylor Megill (4-6, 4.80) vs Felipe Escalona (3-1, 3.50)
The Mets finally opened the scoring in the fifth when Brett Baty singled in Dominic Smith. Felipe Escalona was fantastic again, he went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, walking one and striking out eight. Tylor Megill was just as dominant, going 7.2 shutout innings with five hits, one walk and six strikeouts. Josh Hader would pitch the last 1.1 innings, and while giving up a solo home run to Anthony Rizzo and a base hit to Brandon Drury, he would earn the save. An unfortunate loss for Escalona, who pitched more than well enough to deserve the win, but the Nationals offense was nonexistent, again.

Not only have the Nationals been swept in three low scoring games, they have now lost five in a row and seven of their last ten. The offense has all but disappeared, other than Anthony Rizzo’s solo home runs…but he has been striking out more as well.

The Nationals (31-31) will not have any respite in what appears to be a cold stretch. They have to travel to Seattle right after this game to play the Mariners for three games before flying to Miami (also without an off day in between) for four. They will then play the Braves for seven games in a ten day stretch, with only the Giants in between. It will be a brutal stretch for Washington, and without sounding dramatic, it may be a season defining stretch of games.

Game 3 NLDS - Cardinals vs Mets (Series is tied, 1-1)

Jack Flahtery would continue his impressive postseason pitching, allowing only 1 run through 7.1 innings. Tyler O'Neill would grab another 2 RBI's on a double in the gap, bringing his total to 8 and that's all the Cardinals would need against Peterson as the Cardinals would win, 4-2 and take a 2-1 series lead.

Game 4 has Adam Wainwright (1-0) vs Max Scherzer (0-0)
