Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

Hey all, been a hot minute since i've been in here. I got a question, wondering how everyone else goes about it. Just wanna get everyone's thoughts and process when you come across this issue:

How do YOU gauge when a prospect should be called up on the show? Do you have a certain criteria that you base it off of?
-Is it their overall is past a certain point?
-Is it how they've progressed or how they're playing in the minors?
-Do you set a certain age minimum of when they can get called up?

I'm just curious what everyone else does. I currently have a nationals franchise going, I have Dylan Crews in the minors, hes a 72ovr, which is the highest rated CF in the organization, but I have quite a few OF'ers on the roster, none that really are lighting it up, but also none I want to just get rid of yet (Lane Thomas, Joey Menesses, Stone Garrett, Jason Heyward, a UDFA that i can't remember). Although i'm not sure i'm ready to bring Crews up because I don't want to stunt his growth, I kind of want a change in scenery of our outfield.

Just a topic of discussion, I guess.

I use a few factors. 1) his attributes (not necessarily his overall rating) 2) is he performing well in the minors and trending upwards? 3) I'm I trying to win at the MLB level, or do I have time to bring up a prospect and see how he does.

Also, if he's brought up and isn't performing well for a month or so, I send him back down so I don't reduce his "A" or "B" progression.

To me, it is about one main thing: does the player have one or more skillsets that can add to our team in a meaningful way? But that is tempered with a question if whether or not our utilization of that skillset could potentially stunt the expected growth of that player. Finally, it leads to the question of whether or not we CARE if growth could be stunted.

I could look at my org right now and see 3 or 4 players that could help add to our team in some way. I may not want to risk the growth of some while for others, I might not care as much. Age does not matter in the slightest - I have called-up 18 year olds and I have other guys in their mid-20s that will never be called-up. I'm now in Season 5 in my franchise, and I can tell ya that I see game-generated guys with OVRs in the low 60s that would be FAR more productive than the so-called "prospects" SDS throws into the base rosters with OVRs in the 70s (most base roster "prospects" have no chance of ever being productive because of how bad their individual ratings are).

It's a really tricky balancing act and I think you (as the GM) have to decide that in each individual case and how that impacts the story you are trying to tell (for both that season AND the future). I look at individual ratings, I look at production, and I often go with my gut. The more you embrace the roleplay as a GM and move away from the "video game mindset", the better.

This right here - I wish when it came to Franchise, I wish there wasn't an attribute system - I wish it was based on percentages of statistics or something along those lines. Something so good teams weren't based on attributes and ratings but more-so what each player could do. Give it more a realism feel, but I know that seems almost impossible.

But I understand what you're saying, all of this ties into how you want to make your franchise and how you want to try an win. When I'm taking a bad roster and trying to progress guys in the minors, I find myself signing alot of high 60s-mid 70s overall guys, as bridges to the next year or waiting for the next prospect to be ready. That's when I usually get bored of that franchise and shut it down lol

Committing to a rebuild doesn't mean signing all crappy players. You're not going to have legit "prospects" at every position; so don't go down the road of "bridging" to non-prospects (and don't bridge to guys that are more than a season or 2 away). It's a trap SO many people around here go down and then they bail on the franchise. Sign some old vets who might want a "last hurrah", grab a guy who might have a connection to the team, don't be afraid to have a little fun and write some stories.

To give a bit more context, I had a rough opening year in my Reds franchise (barely escaping 100 losses) and we made two major signings and one was Ian Happ. No, he wasn't upper tier (but certainly well beyond flotsam), but a dang good player that is fun to use and he filled a hole that I didn't really have a legit prospect for. He also was a fun storyline in that he went to college at the University of Cincinnati (so, a homecoming). Having a steady veteran can make the growth phase a lot more fun. That off-season, I also brought back Tyler Mahle...because, why not? Those guys became anchors for us but they did nothing to dissuade us from the overall team rebuild.

I appreciate the mindset of not wanting to just sign 20 FAs in the first season to "rebuild" the team - but doing nothing but adding garbage to the roster is demoralizing.

            Just some food for thought....

Thanks for that and I appreciate that perspective. I guess I never really looked at it like that but it all makes sense. I always get stuck in a funk when it comes to franchise. I start it, I get through a season or two (playing some games, simming most of it) but then I hate when I go through an offseason and sign too many guys in FA then am stuck with guys that I don't want on the roster anymore and I don't feel right just releasing them. I'm also the guy who gets bored of playing with one team over a long amount of time, so that also is why i tend to start numerous franchises with different teams, just for a change of scene.

My favorite part of a franchise rebuild isn't the high level prospects, it's finding the scrap heap players that need a chance to start somewhere. half of those players usually contribute quite a bit, the other half not so much. But those ones that DO are great story lines.

I could probably spend HOURS talking about some of these guys from my last two franchises (one in '22 and the other in '23).

Post-hype sleepers, fringe guys that blow up, borderline guys that do just one thing well. the failed experiments (plenty of those, lol). The attachment that comes from playing every game really shines through with these guys.

Cubs spoil World Series Celebration in opening series

The Pirates hung their banner as the 2025 season began. Unfortunately, the team came out flat in the first two games of the new season as they lost 6-2 and 7-3 to start 2025 at 0-2.

The Pirates did get into the win column in game three of their opening series. That was in part thanks to back to back homeruns from Oneil Cruz and Anthony Santander to kick off the Pirates first inning.

The Pirates added on to their lead in the fourth as CJ Cron knocked in Ke'Bryan Hayes who had singled earlier in the inning.

Hayes got an rbi single of his own the next inning also, with an RBI single.

The pitching staff also did their part as the starter, Jack Flaherty and bullpen arms allowed just two runs as the Pirates took the 4-2 victory to avoid the sweep.

The Pirates will now head on the road to St Louis where they will face off against the Cardinals who are also 1-2 on the young season.

                      APRIL 23-25, 2024: FLAGSTAFF (11-15) @ ROSWELL (14-11)
Stadium: Greater New Mexico Field (Capacity: 5,602)

                      April 23: Aliens 3, Hops 0
                      April 24: Hops 4, Aliens 2 (16)
                      April 25: Aliens 5, Hops 4

Roswell, NM (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops opened up an eight game road trip by dropping two of three in Roswell to the Aliens.

The Flagstaff Hops offensive woes continued on Tuesday evening as they were shutout for a third consecutive game, losing 3-0 to Roswell as they opened a three game series at Greater New Mexico Field. Zach Richards tossed a complete game shutout, scattering five hits to pick up his third win on the season.

Roswell broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning on a Howie Sanders two-run home run down the line in left off of Alex Farmer. It was his second on the season.

The Aliens would add an insurance run in the seventh on a Damien Hudson sacrifice fly that scored Steve Fuzz, who had tripled to open the inning.

Alex Farmer (3-1) took the loss despite another strong outing. He worked 6.2 innings, allowing the three runs on four base hits. He struck out four and walked one.

The Hops snapped a four game losing streak on Wednesday evening with a 4-2 extra innings victory over Roswell. Josh Ortega homered twice and drove in three, including the go ahead two-run home run in the 16th inning to help the Hops to the victory.

Josh Ortega's first home run of the game, a solo shot in the fourth, broke a streak of 35 consecutive innings without scoring a run for the Hops. That streak was an IBL record.

Angel Rodriguez would hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh off of reliever Pedro Macias to put Roswell up 2-1. It was his league leading ninth home run of the season.

But in the top of the ninth, Art Mason and Roberto Geronimo hits back-to-back singles and Kiko Pressley came through with a huge RBI single to tie the ballgame at 2-2.

It would remain that way until the 16th inning when Josh Ortega blasted his second home run of the game and eighth on the season to give Flagstaff a 4-2 lead. Vic Miller would come on to nail down the win and end the four game skid. It was Miller's sixth save on the season.

Aldo Osuna (1-3) earned the win, pitching a scoreless 15th inning for Flagstaff. Starter Ramon Garcia went 6.1 innings and allowed one run on five hits. Pedro Macias was credited with a blown save after allowing Rodriguez's home run in the seventh.

The Hops, last in the IBL in stolen bases, got three in the game, with two from Roberto Geronimo and one from Robbie Westbrook.

In Thursday afternoon's finale, the Aliens jumped out to a big early lead, then hung on for a 5-4 victory to capture the series. Angel Rodriguez did the damage, going 2 for 3 with a double, home run and two RBI in the win for the Aliens.

Roswell would grab a 3-0 lead in the second thanks to an Angel Rodriguez RBI double and Howie Saunders two-run double.

A solo home run from Roberto Geronimo in the third cut the lead to 3-1. It was Geronimo's sixth on the year.

But Roswell would answer right back with a Danny Watson sacrifice fly in the bottom half. On the play, Roberto Geronimo made a leaping catch to rob Watson of a home run, but Blake Pacinelli would score on the play. Geronimo then left the game with an upper body injury.

The Hops would get two bak in the fifth inning on a David Benitez two-run hoem run, his third on the season. They would tie it up in the seventh on a Jimmy James RBI double that score Art Mason.

But Angel Rodriguez greeted reliever Samuel Espiniza by blasting a solo home run to left that put Roswell up for good, 5-4. It was his 10th home run on the year.

Raymond Lane would send down the Hops in order in the ninth to earn his fourth save.

Samuel Espinoza (2-2) would get the loss out of the bullpen. Starter Russell Fluty worked six innings, allowing four run son five hits, while striking out four and walking just one.

The Hops (11-15) will head up to Santa Fe for a weekend series with the Jays (13-13).

Around the League: St George's Eric Klein hit three home runs including a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth as the Archers defeated Prescott 7-6 to pull into a first-place tie with the Hot Shots atop the ML West. The three home runs were the first home runs on the season for Klein.

Gilbert scored five time in the bottom of the eighth to rally for an 11-9 victory over Salt River to improve to an IBL best (17-8). The Barnstormers were led by right fielder Ryan Rodriguez, who went 4 for 5 with two home runs and drove in three. Closer Geronimo Ortega earned his league best 12th save, striking out the side in the ninth.

Sean Williams hit three home runs and drove in five as Santa Fe pummeled El Paso 13-2. The Jays hit seven home runs in the game, a team record. The Jays then rallied late, scoring four times in the bottom of the eighth to defeat El Paso 8-5 on Thursday afternoon to take two of three from the ML Central leaders.

San Diego's Matt Campbell (4-1) tossed a complete game five-hit shutout, striking out eight, as the Seals defeated Henderson 2-0. The reigning DL Cy Young Award winner has lowered his ERA to 1.77 in 2024.

Notes: After Thursday afternoon's game, the Hops placed outfielder Roberto Geronimo on the 10-day Injured List with a shoulder strain. They have recalled outfielder Grant Mitchell from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Josh Ortega has been one of the few bright spots for Flagstaff in a rough first month.

The easiest way would be to start a new and turn budgets off, then you're not constrained by them when trying to make moves.

Or within an existing franchise, you could sign a free agent to a dollar amount that makes the trade satisfy budgetary constraints and increase that players attribues to make him a desirable trade piece.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I'm confused, aren't you removing a huge salary by trading Soto? Even after removing Soto for a bunch of low paid players there are budget issues?

sadly yes, during the Regular Season I just cannot get the trade done, but I just simmed through earlier this day to see if I can do it in the off-season, just like in real life. everything worked there, I just gotta be careful to not miss any steps lol

                                APRIL 26-28, 2024: FLAGSTAFF (13-16) @ SANTA FE (14-15)
                                Stadium: Coca-Cola Park (Capacity: 10,713)

                                April 26: Hops 13, Jays 2
                                April 27: Jays 7, Hops 5
                                April 28: Hops 5, Jays 3

Santa Fe, NM (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops seem to have broken out of their offensive doldrums as they scored 23 runs in three games in Santa Fe, taking two of three from the Jays.

The Flagstaff Hops broke out of their season long slump on Friday nighty as they pounded out a season high 21 hits in a 13-2 romp over the Santa Fe Jays in the opener of a three-game weekend series in the New Mexico capital. David Benitez went 3 for 6 with two home runs and six RBIs to help lead the offensive onslaught.

The Hops jumped on starter Ron Sposato from the start, scoring three runs in the top of the first on an Art Mason RBI single, a David Benitez RBI double and Oscar Aleman RBI single.

They would add five in the second, capped off by a David Benitez grand slam to make it 8-0.

An RBI double from Robbie Westbrook and an RBI single from Art Mason in the sixth made it 10-0. Newly recalled outfielder Gramt Mitchell drove in the 11th run in the seventh. David Benitez would hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot, and Issac Nettles would single home Oscar Aleman to make it 13-0 in the eighth.

Santa Fe would get solo home runs from D.Marcus Peterson in the eighth and Sergio Sierra in the ninth to avoid the goose egg.

Ryan Pressley (2-2) picked up the win, tossing eight innings and allowing one run on seven hits. He struck out nine and did not issue a walk.

The Hops had every starter except Donnie Roland record a base hit. Robbie Westbrook, Art Mason, David Benitez and Oscar Aleman each had three hits and Issac Netteles had four hits in the win.

On Saturday afternoon, the Jays used the long ball to even the series with a 7-5 victory. The Jays hit three home runs in a seven run third inning to erase a four run deficit.

Flagstaff got off to another quick start in thgis one, scoring three in the first inning. Art Mason hit a two-run home run and David Benitez followed that up with a solo shot. They would add another run in the second on a Kiko Pressley RBI single that score Robbie Westbrook.

But in the third inning Santa Fe struck. D'Marcus Peterson hit a three-run home run off of Juro Yamaguchi to get the Jays back to within a run. Corey Barton then blasted a two-run shot to put the Jays in front, and Sergio Sierra topped it off with a two-run blast of his own in the seven run inning that chased starter Juro Yamaguchi.

The Hops would get one back in the eighth on David Benitez's second home run of the ball game and fourth in the last two games. Benitez is 6 for 11 in the series with four home runs and eight RBIs. He came into the weekend with just three home runs and four RBIs on the season.

Matt Price picked up the win for Santa Fe, pitching six innings and allowing four runs on nine hits. Lincoln Graham picked up the save, his seventh, but he tight roped out of a jam, striking out David Benitez, with two runners on base, to end the game.

In Sunday afternoon's finale, Isaac Nettles drove in three runs in a 5-3 victory for the Hops to help them secure a series victory.

The Hops would once again grab an early lead as Isaac Nettles drove in two with a two-out, two-run single in the second inning, scoring Osacr Aleman and Brandley York.

Donny Craig would get the Jays on the board with a solo home run to left in the bottom half of the second inning. The Jays would tie it up in the third on a Pressley sacrifice fly that scored Azerod.

But solo home runs from Art Mason (7) and Bradley York (2) in the fourth put the Hops in front for good, 4-2. They would add an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an Isaac Nettles sacrifice fly.

Santa Fe (14-15) would get one back in the bottm half of the seventh on a Corey Barton solo home run, but that was as close as they would get. Vic Miller came on in the ninth to nail down his seventh save, sending down the Jays in order.

Alex Farmer (4-1) picked up the win, tossing six innings and allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out four and walked two.

The Hops (13-16) will have tomorrow off before opening a two-game series down in Surprise against the Saguaros (17-12) to end the road trip.

Around the League: Chandler got RBI singles from Cory Law and Henry Ruiz in the bottom of the 11th inning to rally for a 4-3 victory over Goodyear at Desert Financial Field.

Rio Rancho scored two in the bottom of the ninth to tie St. George and then walked it off with three in the tenth on a Brian Cooper three-run home run. It was the Owlz third straight win.

Salt Lake's J.P. Grant went 2 for 4 with two home runs and drove in four as the Chukar's scored seven first inning runs on their way to a 10-0 victory over Roswell.

Goodyear's Vladimir Bruno homered twice and drove in three against his former team on Saturday afternoon as the Jack Rabbots deefated Chandler 5-3. Bruno leads the Desert League with 10 home runs after coming over as a free agent this past winter.

Glendale's Cristobal Gonzalez improved to (3-0) as he tossed seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out ten, as the Desert Dogs shutout Gilbert 4-0.

Lee Lim lined a bases loaded two-run single in the bottom of the ninth as Scottsdale walked it off in a 7-6 victory over Long Beach. The Scorpions improved to (17-11) and sit atop the DL Central, a half game up on Surprise.

Trades: The Colorado Springs Snow Sox have traded 24-year-old right fielder Connor Scott (68 OVR, B POT) to Austin in exchange for 22-year-old third baseman Chuck Lopez (65 OVR, B POT). Scott is rated as the 47th best prospect in the IBL and the 3rd ranked prospect on the Fire Frogs. He will start his Fire Frogs journey in Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Lopez is also a top 50 prospect, coming in at 48th overall, and second in the Snow Sox organization.
