Cardinals struggle with Cubs...lead down to a single game

The Cardinals (23-17) dropped the 3 game series against the Cubs in Chicago to begin the week. The series loss now cuts the divisional lead to just one game for the Cardinals

The Cardinals just didn't have any offensive fire power this series as they managed 7 total runs, 5 of those in the series finale on Wednesday when they avoided a sweep. If it wasn't for Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado, the Cardinals would have likely not scored at all.

The Cardinals will travel to Boston for a 3 game weekend series with the Red Sox in hopes of turning things around.

Cardinals sweep Red Sox in Fenway Park

The Cardinals (26-17) swept the Red Sox in a three game series at Fenway Park over the weekend. The sweep puts the Cards now 2 games up on the Cubs in the NL Central.

The Cardinals won Friday night 4-1 as Miles Mikolas was dominant once again earning his 6th win (6-0) on the season and he leads the National League in ERA at 1.06. Nolan Arenado had 3 RBIs on the day with a homerun as well. Goldschmidt chipped in the other RBI as he earned 3 hits. The bullpen was solid with Ryan Helsley recording the save.

Saturday night was more of the same as the Cards would win 3-1 behind a solid performance from Steven Matz. Matz went 7 innings earning his 4th win of the season (4-2) as he struck out 7 Red Sox hitters and had no hitter until the 6th. Goldschmidt and Tyler O'Neill both launched solo homeruns and Juan Yepez added an RBI double to provide the scoring. Genesis Cabrera would earn his 3rd save of the year by getting the final four outs, with 3 being strikeouts.

Sunday's finale saw more fight from the BoSox but they would come up short again, this time 7-3. Adam Wainwright wasn't perfect but he got the job done going 5 innings giving up 3 runs on 9 hits, but he did earn his 4th win (4-2) Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado and Willson Contreras would all go deep in the game. Arenado, Contreras and Tommy Edman each had 2 RBIs with Edman providing a 2 out 2 run double in the 5th.

The Cardinals will head back home for a 3 game series with the Brewers at Busch Stadium to start the week.

2023 has seen the NY Mets return to the form they had for most of 2023. The additions of Justin Verlander and Rosi Sasaki have proven to be a huge boost to this team’s title chances in 2023.

The current standings are as follows (only posting the NL East in this update due to it being so early):

Mets: 22-7
Braves: 16-13
Phillies:16-13
Nationals: 7-20
Marlins: 7-22

I have been rocking a 6-man rotation with Verlander, Scherzer, Quintana, Sasaki, Peterson and Carrasco (rotating one of Peterson, Quintana and Carrasco out each turn through). Carrasco missed the first 3 weeks of the season with an injry suffered at the end of spring training and has finally returned

Rotation:

Scherzer : 4-0/39.1 innings pitched/50 Ks/2.52 ERA/0.97 WHIP

Verlander: 3-0/41.1 innings pitched/42Ks/3.27 ERA/1.06 WHIP

Peterson: 2-2/30.0 IP/22 Ks/3.00 ERA/1.30 WHIP

Sasaki: 5-1/35.0 IP/46Ks/3.34 ERA/1.06 WHIP

Carrasco: 0-0/7.1 IP/6 Ks/11.05 ERA/1.91

Quintana: 1-3/27.1 IP/22 Ks/3.62 ERA/1.35 WHIP

The bullpen has largely been fantastic for me. Edwin Diaz has been even better than he was in 2022 and is so far perfect on save chances. Robertson and Raley have been fantastic as SU for us and have lived up to their billing as reliable high leverage veteran BP arms. Drew Smith, Ottavino and Curtiss have been solid in middle relief as well. The one blemish in the BP has been Tommy Hunter. Today on May 1st, Hunter has been sent down to make room for Elieser Hernandez, who will be taking over a LRP role for us

David Robertson: 0-0/6 HLDs/6 IP/11 Ks/3.00 ERA/1.67 WHIP

The lineup has mostly been up and down with the exception of McNeil, Marte and Alonso, who are both among the most productive hitters in the MLB through the first month of the season. Francisco Lindor has been great in RBI and clutch situations, but overall has struggled, while Nimmo so far is struggling in his first year of his new 8 year /162 million dollar contract. Brett Baty started the year with AAA Syracuse but was brought up to take over 3B 2 weeks into the season due to Eduardo Escobar struggling to hit over the Mendoza line after missing a few games with minor injuries. Mark Canha, while struggling in the average department, has been a nice source of power and RBIs towards the bottom of the lineup for us. The lineup currently (I have currently stopped platooning due to struggling hitters) :

Nimmo: 109 ABs/4 HR/12 RBIs/.248 average/.299 OBP/.703 OPS

Marte: 100 ABs/3 HR/8 RBIs/.290 AVG/14 RS/.336 OBP/.786 OPS

RP Dennis Santana (AAA) - Struggling during April with a 4.82 ERA through 9.1 innings

2B Warren Saunders (AA) - swinging a hot bat so far in ‘23, batting .364 and driving in 4 runs over 33 ABs in April

3B Mark Vientos (AAA) - Raked in April with a .315 average and 16 RBI’s in 73 ABs through April. Will likely be a call up very very soon to take over the RH DH platoon for me

SP Dominic Hamel (AA) - Had a great month of April, posting a 2.40 ERA over 30 innings, along with 21 K’s. Was our minor league pitcher of the year in 2022, so will be on our radar through the franchise down the road

SP Joey Lucchesi (AAA) - had a strong month of April with a 1.83 ERA and punching out 35 hitters over 39.1 innings pitched. He's working his way back from TJ surgery and likely to make an impact at some point in 2023

Jordan Walker is at Memphis (AAA) right now where he's playing 3rd base everyday. He's hitting like .253 with 8 homeruns and 20 something RBIs

He struggled in the Spring so I decided it was best to let him develop a bit more before calling him up. Same for Nolan Gorman who struggled defensively.

I'm about to conclude the month of May (my updates are behind) so I will re-evaluate my 26 man roster and look to patch holes internally before going out of the market.

hey cb, have you had to play Yepez in the OF yet?
if so, how's his range & fielding holding up?
or is he strictly DH, because between him & Burleson, I don't know if either one can be trusted in the field, beyond maybe sometime giving Goldie a breather at first.

also, speaking of Jordan Walker, so obviously you know the default roster had him at 3B
but the first roster update, the Show changed his primary to left.
is sending down Yepez and replacing him with Walker in the OF imminent?
and sooner rather than later? or is Walker staying at third, stuck behind Nolan?
lotsa questions, lotsa questions lol

also, feel free to send Nolan to Baltimore to make room for Walker if you plan on keeping him at third

Hey CB! Love your updates as always, especially as a Cardinals fan haha. Still using the same settings you usually use (Legend hitting/fielding)? What about the ball marker, PCI on/off, fielding settings, etc, how do you typically play?

Ok, Got my rebuild franchise set up. Going to replace the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Oakland A's with my kids baseball teams lol. I'll be controlling the Las Vegas Sharks and the Georgia Red Dawgs will be replacing the A's.

For the Red Dawgs I will be leaving their roster alone. For the Sharks I have kind of done an expansion draft/trade system. I made a list of 4 players for every team. 1 SP, 1RP, 2 position players. Each player must have at minimum 2 years of service time and no higher than a 79 overall. So I did my "draft" took the players I want from their team and replace them with a player of the same position from my team. I only drafted for the MLB 26 man active roster. I could not pick more than 1 player per team.

I also released the entire Farm System and replaced it with Free Agents 65ovr and lower. So with that being said gentleman and maybe some ladies. I present to you the 2023 Georgia Sharks 28 round expansion draft selections.

I have Yepez as a DH/1B as well as Burleson although Burleson is injured and won’t be back until june sometime.

I’ll do my best to not use either in the outfield as we have enough depth there. Juan Yepez is a trade candidate come July because he really has no spot but he’s our DH for now as I let Walker and Gorman develop a tad longer.

Jordan Walker will likely make his way to the mlb via outfield or DH. He could end up at first eventually as Goldy is under contract for one more season.

Nolan won’t be leaving anytime soon

Yes default legend for hitting and pitching.

Ball marker - classic on
PCI OFF
Fielding is assist w/manual throwing

2023 Washington Nationals

The Nationals (39-43) are in the Windy City to face the Cubs (40-41) for three games. Washington won the first series between the teams back in April.

Game One: Josiah Gray (5-7, 3.43) vs Marcus Stroman (8-5, 2.97)
Major issues for the Nationals in the second, as Brandon Drury injured his shoulder on a swing. He was having trouble even lifting it and the Nationals are fearing the worst*. Lane Thomas would be the substitute, and he would move to right field while Joey Meneses would move to first. Thomas would saw off his bat and reach first on an infield single, then steal second and score on a Brandon Nimmo single. The Cubs would tie the game in the sixth; Brennan Davis walked in his second Major League at-bar to start the inning, Seiya Suzuki and Ian Happ singled and Jesus Aguilar hit a sac fly to score Davis. That would be the only scoring done until the 12th, when Keibert Ruiz doubled off the ivy to score CJ Abrams, who came on in the ninth as a pinch runner for Gleyber Torres. Trevor Rosenthal came in to close out the game, striking out two in the process. It was a hard fought game, and both teams had great chances to score throughout, but neither took advantage until extras. Josiah Gray had a fantastic outing (7.0IP/5H/1R/1BB/6K) but ended up with a no decision.

*Brandon Drury suffered shoulder cartilage damage and will miss 1-2 months. Initial fears were far worse, but the Nationals will be missing a major bat in the lineup for some time. The Nationals have called up Sean Doolittle to fill the empty roster spot, as they need an extra arm in the bullpen as they have used quite a few pitchers in the past few games. If an additional position player is needed, the rumors are it will either be OF Donovan Casey or 1B Drew Mendoza, who would be making his MLB Debut.

Game Two: Zach Davies (5-6, 3.46) vs Drew Smyly (4-4, 2.38)
Washington scored first; Brandon Nimmo singled with two down in the second and Victor Robles followed up with a double to the corner in left. They would add another in the third as Kike Hernandez crushed a solo home run to deep left center on a 3-0 hanging curveball. Washington would keep up the pressure in the fourth, Gleyber Torres and Brandon Nimmo each singled and Wilmer Perez would come through with two down with an RBI single to put the Nationals up 3-0. The Cubbies rallied in the bottom half, loading the bases with nobody out before James Triantos hit an infield fly. Jason Heyward followed with a single and Ian Happ hit a sac fly to make it a 3-2 game. The inning would end when David Bote was thrown out attempting to advance to third on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the fifth, Seiya Suzuki hit a line drive off the foot of Davies, who was hobbled afterwards and had to leave the game*. Jackson Rutledge would have to come in for long relief, he would get out of the fifth unscathed but would run into trouble in the sixth; giving up a game-tying lead off home run to Christopher Morel and then giving up the lead in the seventh when Seiya Suzuki doubled and scored on a Nico Hoerner single. Washington nearly rallied in the eighth, Joey Meneses singled and Gleyber Torres doubled to put runners on second and third with one out, but the bats went silent and the runners were left stranded. Taylor Rogers would come in to close the game and get the Nats to hit three fly balls to end the game and even up the series.

*Zach Davies has a bruised foot and will only miss a few days.

Game Three: Cade Cavalli (5-7, 3.78) vs Adbert Alzolay (4-5, 5.15)
Washington scored in the second after Lane Thomas hit a chopper to Alzolay, who airmailed the throw to first allowing Thomas to go to second. Keibert Ruiz then came through with two outs when he lined a base hit up the middle to score Thomas. Ruiz was also impactful on the defensive end, throwing out two base runners in the first two innings. The Nationals added on in the third; Luis Garcia, Yadiel Hernandez, Joey Meneses, and Gleyber Torres all had base hits and Lane Thomas grounded into what should have been an inning ending double play but the relay throw to first was offline allowing another run to score. Chicago would answer in the bottom of the third when James Triantos hit a solo home run, and again in the bottom of the sixth when John Hicks homered. They would continue the rally in the sixth; Nico Hoerner followed the Hicks homer with a single and Jason Heyward would hit a triple to the corner in right to tie the game at 3 with only one out. Ian Happ then hit a liner to third that went right through the glove of Gleyber Torres and into left, allowing Heyward to score. Seiya Suzuki followed with a double to score Happy, which ended the day for Cade Cavalli. Victor Arano would enter and strikeout Willson Contreras, but then give up a double to Christopher Morel, putting the Cubs up 6-3. The Nationals would get one run off closer Taylor Rogers when Lane Thomas hit a solo home run to start the ninth, but that was all they could get and the Cubs took the game and the series.

The Nationals and Cubs end their season series with Washington coming out on top 4-3, and both teams are hovering just under .500 but still within Wild Card contention.

The Nationals made an interesting move after the series, sending Brady House back to AAA and recalling Anderson Tejeda. House could not get it going; starting the season slow before being injured and just not finding his groove after coming back. He was moved into the leadoff spot despite his struggles in an attempt to make him feel comfortable, but the payoff was limited. House was batting just .189 with a home run and 8 RBI. Tejeda, who started the season at AAA before replacing House when he was injured, has played in 33 games at the major league level, batting .231 with 5 HR and 16 RBI. He provided a spark early in the season and the team is hoping he can again.

The Nationals (40-45) are in the middle of a 20 day stretch of games, but the next seven are in Washington. They will open the homestand with four games against the Pirates, followed by three against Philadelphia and three against Miami before a four game series in Philly that leads right up to the All Star Break.

Overall Record:7-5 (1st NL Central...tied with Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers

Pirates turn the tables with sweep of Astros

Many thought the Pirates could have been set for their first sweep of the 2023 season as they faced off against the defending world series champion Houston Astros. Well there was a sweep but Pittsburgh was the team who came out on top.

Game one set the tone and the end of the game likely led to Pittsburgh's momentum for the remainder of the series. That game went into extra innings after a combined 9th inning effort against Ryan Pressley saw the Pirates tie the game in that inning which ended Pressley's perfect 7 for 7 start to the year. Pittsburgh carried that into the tenth as Ji-Hwan Bae's bloop single walked it off for the Pirates. For a side note, Bae was hitless going into this game and got his first two hits and first two rbi's of the year in the 4-3 victory.

Game two saw Pittsburgh score their highest run total of thus far in the young season as they took the 2-0 series lead with a 9-6 victory.

Game three pitted Mitch Keller against Lance McCullers JR. Neither have had a great start to the year but Keller's first two game was especially bad as he came into this game with a 9.00 ERA. So naturally, Keller would bring a no hitter into the 7th inning. That no hitter was obviously broken up as that would have been the headline had it happened and when it was broken up, it broke up in a big way and eventually led to back to back homers for Alex Bregman (3 run) and Jeremy Pena. Those shots brought the Pirates comfortable lead of 5-0 to a slim 5-4. Pittsburgh was however able to immediately respond in the bottom of the inning with hits by Oneil Cruz, Jack Suwinski and Ji-Man Choi bringing the lead back up to 7-4. Houston managed another run in the eighth inning but David Bednar was able to hold them off in the 9th to earn his 5th save of the season.

Pittsburgh will look to keep it going as they travel to St. Louis to take on the Cardinals (6-6).

Diamondbacks continue to roll, take last two from Rockies(8-21)

The Dbacks came out flat in game 1, but they made sure to bounce back with solid pitching and better offense the remainder of the series.

Rockies could not do any wrong, bloop hits drop in, would not for Dbacks, Jameson unlucky but will be lucky to be in AZ by end of April as the youngster has struggled mightily. Colorado controls this one and takes the win 6-2.

Dbacks bats once again struggle, but come alive just enough to give the Dbacks a lead early, and tack on a couple later for the 4-1 win. Davies was decent, despite the homerun from McMahon which was his second of the series. The Rockies also hit into two crucial double plays in the first two innings, but regardless a good outing and solid win.

Game 3 was never (really) in doubt as the Dbacks jumped on Senzatela right from the gun annd would finish the game with 7 runs and 14 hits. This happened as they almost just realized this was a major hitter’s paradise. Finally we saw a couple of big flys, including Carroll’s first of the year, and Ryne Nelson pitched well enough for a 7-4 Dbacks win.

Nick Ahmed played well in this series. He went 3/6 with a 2 triples, homer, 4 RBIs, no Ks and a BB. He only played the last two but clearly made a large impact offensively and continues his hot streak.

With Jameson pitching so poor, he has been optioned to AAA and the Dbacks have called up Kevin Ginkel. More on that later.

The Dbacks now have a day off to start May, but will have to head to Texas for a two game interleague set against the Rangers.

April Recap

Overall April was a month of ups and downs, but mostly ups for the Dbacks as they finish the first month 16-13 and tied atop the NL West. An ideal start when you played 14 of your 29 games against the top two teams in your division. With what seems to be a weaker schedule in May, can the Dbacks take advantage and keep this young team rolling.
