The Nationals (40-45) return home to take on the Pittsburgh Pirates (37-48) in a four game series. The Pirates started the season off hot, leading the NL Central at the end of April; but their season has gone into a downward spiral since and they now find themselves with one of the worst records in the majors.
Game One: Mitch Keller (5-6, 3.58) vs Stephen Strasburg (7-6, 2.06)
The Nationals were the first to break the scoring drought in the fifth; Yadiel Hernandez singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then Joey Meneses and Gleyber Torres hit back to back singles to score Hernandez. The Pirates would start the game going 0-12 with runners in scoring position, but they would finally get a run in the seventh when Josh VanMeter singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Bubba Chandler double. The Pirates would add on in the ninth when Michael Chavis doubled off of Carl Edwards Jr and Josh VanMeter followed up with a two run home run. The Nationals would get the winning run to the plate but could not come through off veteran closer Adam Ottavino, and the Pirates take Game 1.
Game Two: Jerad Eickoff (4-6, 3.53) vs MacKenzie Gore (6-7, 3.86)
Lane Thomas, who has been an all or nothing type of hitter this year, hit his team leading 12th home run in the bottom of the second to give the Nationals an early lead. They added another in the second when Brandon Nimmo doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored when Yadiel Hernandez grounded out to second. The Pirates would bring in J.T. Brubaker in the sixth, he struck out Joey Meneses and then had to leave the game on the next batter when Gleyber Torres hit a line drive that deflected off his shoulder*. The Pirates then had to turn to Zach Thompson. He would prevent any further offense from Wasbington, but MacKenzie Gore was fantastic, going 6.2 shutout innings, giving up four hits and striking out three. Aaron Bummer and Trevor Rosenthal would finish off the game to give Washington an easy 2-0 win. Their offense was not great, despite having 9 hits, but a win is a win.
*J.T. Brubaker is having tightness in his shoulder and will miss a few days
Game Three: Roansy Contreras (4-6, 4.25) vs Josiah Gray (5-7, 3.29)
The game of small ball would continue in the third game of the series. Pittsburgh scored in the third when Bubba Chandler singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on a Tucupita Marcano single. Hoy Park would be up next, and he would homer on a hanging slider to put the Pirates up 3-0. The Nationals would get a run back in the fifth; Lane Thomas singled but was forced out at second when Kike Hernandez hit a ground ball deep in the hole to short. Oneil Cruz made a fantastic diving stop for it and barely threw out Thomas. Hernandez would make up for it by going first to third on a weak single to center from Wilmer Perez, and he would score when CJ Abrams singled to center. That would be it for this game, both bullpens were lights out and neither team could really put hits together.
Game Four: Trevor Williams (6-6, 2.80) vs Zach Davies (5-6, 3.50)
Bryan Reynolds started the scoring with a solo shot in the first, but Joey Meneses would even the score in the second with a solo home run of his own. He would drive in another run in the third on a sac fly and Anderson Tejeda would follow with a two out single to put the Nationals ahead 3-1. Lane Thomas led off the fourth with a ground ball that deflected off of Williams, who injured his finger on the play and had to leave the game*. The Nationals would add an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Ildemaro Vargas singled to right, Connor Scott attempted a diving catch but could not keep the ball in the glove and that allowed Joey Meneses to score from second. Trevor Rosenthal would get the save, remaining perfect on the year.
*Trevor Williams suffered a finger confusion and will miss 1-2 weeks
It was an interesting series, and neither team could really mount much offense. The Nationals are definitely missing Brandon Drury in the middle of the lineup, and they are tired as they are in the middle of a long stretch of games. The Nationals are a contact team and really thrive when they can string hits together, but it just did not happen in this series. On the other hand, the Pirates came in with a very young roster, many of these players are rookies this year or are in their second year. They are still raw, but there is a lot of speed and some pop in the bats with this young team, and they are going to be fun to watch in the coming years.
Washington (42-47) will stay home to host the Phillies (41-48) for three games.
