Ball in the dirt. Catcher throws it back to the pitcher. Pitcher asks for a new ball. I definitely have not seen that one before.

Lots of interesting stuff on this play. First, the avoidance by the runner. Then the extremely non-standard play of throwing to 3rd to get the lead runner on a tag play. When I watched this live, I wondered "why the gather and lollipop throw? The replay showed it clearly though - look how far Morel is off of 3rd when Dansby fields the ball. Regardless of how long it took Morel to cover the base, I'm impressed that the AI knew it had the time to throw to 3rd (even with that kind of weaksauce throw while Morel gets to 3rd) and still get the runner because he got slowed down by having to avoid getting hit by the ball. Ideally there'd be some kind of animation to allow Morel to catch the ball on the run like a pitcher does when covering first - that way the throw could come out harder from SS. And yes, the commentary is a big miss on this play.

In spite of those last two quibbles, I'm glad the end result of the play was what it was. IRL, this is the kind of play that likely turns into a rundown because the SS is going to get the ball out quicker to 3rd and the runner won't even try getting there, but I don't think the CPU is coded to have runners respond to rundowns. The end result is probably the same as it would be IRL, except that a rundown might allow the trailing runner to get to 2nd while the lead is tagged out.

I had pretty much this exact same play happen to me today as well. It was cool to see the AI throw to third to get the out. I thought the throw would just go to first, but they surprised me!

I was playing the Dodgers and announcers talked about a rookie of theirs making their mlb debut.

I’ve got that one too, in a game vs the Twins.

Batter hit a long, high no doubter down the RF line. He stayed frozen in his follow thru to see if it stayed fair. When it did he dropped his bat started down the line and SNAPPED his fingers on his left hand!

My guy was motoring around second until I made him stay at 2nd. He actually threw a little tantrum on the base when I pulled him back.
