I mean come on, there are even guys in this years game that logged over 300 at bats last year who have terrible CAP renders. The roster feels absolutely and cheaply thrown together.

I do agree that Scott spindler (aka ridin) could be a positive sign they may be continuing to focus on minor leagues however. And MLB has already said they would like to negotiate combined rights with the MLBPA and MILB, so until we are finally at that bridge I guess we won’t know how we are going to cross it.

I will say this though. I know this will be an unpopular opinion. If it is a decision of money and it comes down to including the N leagues or the minor leagues in the future, I honestly feel like resources should go to the minor leagues. I have no interest in reliving history, and feel like an MLB game should first and foremost represent the current product as it stands today. Just my two cents. Other than the hardcore “baseball fans” I can’t imagine a casual audience would even know who bucks O’Neil, or satchel page are. But I guarantee you a casual fan is more than likely to know who their next “big thing” is.

Licensing can be a tricky issue. As we saw licensing and image likeness basically kill a top selling franchise in the NCAA football games.
I would think with them hiring ridin officially that they have the plans to keep including as many minor league guys as possible. I am hoping that maybe the hiring of him means they plan to expand the minor leagues once they leave behind ps4 version and rebuild under the hood. I mean if they know how to pay for the entire milb license they can expand no problem I would think

AS for the part about which to pay for. Sadly I feel like the show would put the money towards the negro leagues if they had to choose one. But I do not believe SDS to be that financially strapped to have to choose.

I hear ya. I think the one saving grace is the MLBPA saying they want to negotiate rights jointly with MiLB and MLB being very open to this. If you can get the rights for both in one fail swoop that could be a huge win. Plus with minor league contraction teams made 10 year commitments to their minor league affiliates. So hopefully with this deeper integration into the minor league communities it allows for more options and intertwinement with their parent organizations

Not "getting away" with anything. The minor league players likenesses was apart of the mlbpa rights. Once a player signed to be a pro they lost everything until the were promoted to the mlb and joined the mlbpa.

The minor leaguers renogotiated this with the mlb in their newest agreement.

do you happen to know if this means all minor leaguers have to join the union, or can any of them opt out? and if they opt out, can the Show still have them in the game?
I've searched the web but cannot find a definitive answer

Good question. It may depend on the terms of the CBA, but I would imagine that teams which reside in so called “right to work” states would not be able to enforce a closed shop CBA organization article. There may not be a closed shop article at all considering some prominent players were not in the MLBPA in the past eg. Barry Bonds.

To follow up, the CBA is not currently available due to the recent ratification with minor league players. So I can only guess as to the content of the actual contract. However, I would be very surprised if the contract included closed shop organization due to the broad reach of the players and organizations involved.

That being said, if a minor league player were to not join the association (or if a player lost “good standing”) they would likely have to negotiate terms of licensing individually. And that would obviously depend upon the player’s willingness to pursue the licensing agreement as well as the publisher’s willingness to pursue the licensing agreement. With the exception being some sort of employment agreement between the team (or MLB) and the individual player that recognizes either MLB or MLBPA as the sole licensing agent. In which case MLB or MLBPA would be the bargaining agent which deals with the publisher.

Unless you’re a star of say “Barry bonds” level it makes zero sense to opt out though. One, your name image and likeness rights probably aren’t worth two nickels because you haven’t done anything to be a star yet. Two, you lose all representation and protections that the union provides. Which more than likely means you’re paying for your own representation when it comes to things like arbitration. Sorry, but even with the increased salaries you don’t have that kind of money. Two you lose the health insurance that is provided by the union through the teams. That means any medical care provided by your organization is at the teams discretion. Oh you’re an 11th round pick who has a five percent chance of making the big leagues? Sorry you tore your ACL bud, here’s your walking papers. Also, not being apart of the union more than likely means that those new minimum salaries aren’t guaranteed under the CBA. Which means the team doesn’t have to pay you that increase if they don’t want to. You’re still under contract to that organization who owns your right though, so it’s not like you can just go to the highest bidder.

It would be extremely foolish for any minor leaguer to opt out. In fact it’s very rare for any MLB player to opt out. Barry Bonds was a unique case.

Yea I was gonna caveat this to say I dont think "opting" out would be an issue. I mean currently we dont have any mlb players who are opted so dont see why now a minor league prospect would do this.

The worry here is that it doesn't say Friday for a roster update, just sometime in April.

Hopefully it is Friday but it's not certain.
