Great piece. You really did a good job of understanding the many different frustrations many have with the game. I especially like the last paragraph about different fans wanting different things.

"Ultimately, a lot of us would be happy with 25 if we heard about how bullpen logic was finally fixed and there will be better trade logic..."

And I think many at OS who play this game year round are content with that. They will get the game regardless its a tradition and for some here It may be the only game that they play or one of very few that they do but that shouldn't take away from the fans who are tired of the stagnated development of the game.

Last year was the first time since MLB 09 that I did not purchase the game. I routinely would get five plus seasons in every iteration of the game. I hope to be pleasantly surprised with the rollout for the game, but I'm not holding my breath.

Re: MLB The Show 25 Should Have Something to Prove

SDS and The Show 25 really do have a lot to prove this year. When the preview trailer for '24 was released last year, I don't believe I've ever experienced so much dejection and negativity from the community that centered mostly around the graphics not being upgraded, but also from the game looking stale in many facets and later on modes like March to October seeming abandoned.

I have been one of these people very vocal about the game's graphical deficiencies, especially with the skylines in the ballparks. Many are outdated, present low-res quality graphics (i.e. the terrain beyond right field in Dodger Stadium), and some cringeworthy like the crooked top of the St. Louis Gateway Arch. I have been looking at that eyesore for at least 5 years now.

We should get a better sense tomorrow how much focus went into graphical upgrades. Hoping for the best of course. I'm also hoping to see presentation upgrades.

Whether or not MLBTS25 should have something to prove, I can't say because I've known for months I was in for a day one purchase, no matter what I was going to see and hear once details and news started being released. I think the most relevant question is, does Sony San Diego feel like they have to prove themselves. I honestly don't think they feel that way. Whether they should feel they have something to prove, I can't say on that front either, that they do or don't. But I don't think they feel that way. I think they are happy with where they have taken this product in the last twenty years and I think theyre proud of their accomplishments. I'll let smarter men than me debate whether or not Sony SDS needs to prove themselves all over again.

You make solid points, I mean the game sells really really well. They have no real.competition to push them or take sales from them. So really any progress made will simply be from if they desire to do so.

Still love Ramone’s quote at the end of The Show 14 teaser trailer:

“When it’s all set and done, reality is the best innovation.”

Funny thing is when they show the new ps4 face models in that teaser the hair is actually already moving! 10 years later it’s an unlocked ps5 addition [emoji28]

Now show us some ps5 innovations today [emoji1374]

I remember how excited I was that the game was coming to gamepass on Xbox. I expected to put many more hours into it. But I ended up playing it less than ever. I haven't made it through a full game in the last two seasons. As soon as I load a game up, it immediately looks, sounds and feels stale.

Good article. It's frustrating in franchise to see Y2Y ignored while new "features" are botched.

One new feature was morale which was so bad they got rid of it. Another was the new player draft. It was a change in how players are scouted and new graphics during the draft but it failed to address the biggest problem which was a lack of viable players who could develop into MLB level.

How could developers not realize the scouted projected progression was nowhere close to what progression is in the game?

If they aren't going to fix the progression problem then spend developer hours on Y2Y so at least I can get new animations. Until then I'll keep my 23 franchise.

In my opinion, it definitely has something to prove. I have been on the edge each of the last few years waiting for SDS to show me something and not made a purchase until release date. I need more than what has been there in the past to make this a day 1 purchase. I honestly need to see expanded rosters at this point to make this a day 1 purchase for me.

The new draft did several important things. First, it stopped the 25 year old draft picks. This is by far the most important. It also produced more players that are closer to MLB ready.

I think you would be surprised that the draft picks are much more viable than you think. Try a 15 year test simulation and go through the rosters. You will be surprised. Now, yes, there is improvement needed. But this is something they have been working on for multiple iterations now. The new draft has actually helped because it stops those 23-25 year old draft picks and hence 30 year old rookies.

I know I have said the above before. And believe me, I don't blindly defend the game. Check my MLB post history. But I think you need to take a look yourself at this to see this progression and draft thing is actually not as catastrophic as you make it sound.

The draft isn’t new at all. They literally took card unveils from DD added it for the first 3 picks and that’s it. They made it out like they created a new scouting and drafting system and they didn’t. It’s the exact same function you just have 3 scouts now instead of 4. The way the scouts scout is the exact same. The big selling point during the stream was “no more bad logic like closers and relievers being half the top 30 propsects. That wasn’t true either.

The line in the article about how massive sports games are and that being to their detriment is something I don’t think is talked about enough. You might play the Call of Duty single player campaign but that’s probably not why you bought the game. The opposite with the Last of Us, no matter how good the multiplayer part may have been that’s probably not the reason you bought the game. You bought it for the single player story. Now take sports games: some people (me) never touch the online aspects of the game. Others only play online. And you have to crank a new version out every year and try to keep two very different fan bases happy. And on top of that there are multiple different ways to play online and offline: rtts, franchise, m2o, negro leagues storylines, jeter storylines, plus all the dd stuff that I can’t even speak to.
