Re: Who should get the 09 cover?
He's a great player. That's reason enough. The cover don't sell the game anyway. One day we'll live in a world where talent supersedes nice stories...
I know they're both talented, but it won't be Lester because pitchers are bad on covers, and it won't be Hamilton because the Rangers have very little pull despite having the best offense in the league. I'm just sick of every conversation about Josh Hamilton ending in saying that it's such a nice story... nice, yes, but does it sell video games?NFL: Tennessee Titans
MLB: Cincinnati RedsComment

Re: Who should get the 09 cover?
Is this a real post? I know college football has been exciting this year but man, you must hae missed a ton. Hamilton I believe is 3rd in the majors with RBI's (he kinda fatigued out later in the season with the texas heat) and he might of...not sure..but might of hit a HR derby record 30+ homeruns, 28 in the first round. He makes 500 Ft HR's look like a cute swing, and yes, its not just a nice story. He overcame a drug and alcoholic addiction to save not only his spiritual life, but his marriage and carreer. So yea, he would sell. You tube the 2008 HR derby and get some popcorn playa. And if you get bored with that, youtube hamilton and see all the blasts he hit against some of the top pitchers in the league. K-Rod being my favorite. A walk off HR against him.One day we'll live in a world where talent supersedes nice stories...

Re: Who should get the 09 cover?
I agree with Wookie on this one, Josh Hamilton is one of the best players period. Also, it dosen't matter who's on the cover. John Madden used to be on the cover of Madden and people still bought it......One day we'll live in a world where talent supersedes nice stories...

Re: Who should get the 09 cover?
I know. I said he was good. And while the cover doesn't sell the game, it is still part of the marketing mix. Why else did MLB 2K series pay Derek Jeter so much for a multi-year deal right when they were making their first big push as a franchise?
Because he was the person who was expected to be on the cover. Then with athletes, the mindset changed to "Why this player? Why not this player?" Just go through the thread and see how many incredulous fan-boy posts there are. Comparing cover athletes with the commentator whose namesake is used is not a fair comparison.
I've seen all of the stuff you mentioned, and he was 2nd in RBIs. My point was that despite being a good player, everyone mentions him for his story. That's why everyone thinks he'll be good on the cover. Besides, that was a side argument to begin. Is this a real post? Read my post again. I do not belittle him as a player; in fact, based solely on his play, he would be a good cover athlete. I devalue him for his market, as the Texas Rangers are one of the most forgotten teams on the national stage. It's no coincidence that all MasterCard and Chase Bank commercials contain the same six teams, or that every series of the MLB action figures contains at least one Yankee and one Red Sox player while other teams go incredibly few and far between, or that the past several covers have had Philadelphia, New York, New York, and New York.
I was responding to a comment that mentioned Josh Hamilton and Jon Lester as potential cover athletes. My point was that Sony won't get a picture of the best story to put on their cover, but rather, the best player with marketability. I was just predicting that it won't be Josh Hamilton. I respect him, and I said he was good. I would, however, bet money that it won't be him.Last edited by Shinyhubcaps; 10-30-2008, 10:48 PM.Comment

Hey!!!! you hush your mouth about the rangers. We are not forgotten. We are ninjas...we hide in the shadows and pop out when your least expect us. Next year, Rangers vs dodgers in WS.I know. Re: Who should get the 09 cover?
The Rangers are great! Ian Kinsler... that's a franchise player right there. The problem is how they're perceived nationally, though. They play in a 4-team division and get lost because of how the Angels do so well, and the Athletics and Mariners have done well in the past. I feel the same way about the Brewers getting lost in a 6-team division. MLB, though, is so centered on the East as it is...
So make that a Rangers vs. BREWERS World Series and you've got yourself a deal!Comment

Re: Who should get the 09 cover?
1. Francisco Rodriguez - MVP in '08?
2. Evan Longoria - Firmly confirmed himself as a future star
3. Josh Hamilton - Great story, HR derby at THE Yankee Stadium.
I doubt SCEA will go with another Philly player after Ryan Howard in 2008.
Other than that Sabathia, Pujols, possibly Manny?
