Hitting a baseball is probably the hardest thing to do in real life sports

As long as the hitting is also harder for the CPU, I am good. Heck I like an competitive game. I dont like winning 140 games, batting .400 as a team. Makes it more special when accomplishing a stat...

The game is great. Everything is harder. I was on HOF last year. Back to All-Star for me and loving it. The best thing is you can really tell the difference between the good and bad pitchers. On both offense and defense.

This isn't to say it's easy to get hits, but I've had a much more rewarding experience this year. I consider myself still new to this series (only had 07 for a couple of months), but I find that turning on the visual batter's eye and lowering the pitch speed one or two notches on the All-Star setting as a good place for a newbie to start. Additionally, I need to always remember to watch the ball out of the pitchers hand rather than watching where it will cross the plate. This has helped me tremendously in being able to place the bat on the ball. Now I just need to work on my plate discipline, but some bp sessions should help that. Other than that, this games plays fantastic right out of the box (at least the demo - can't wait for tomorrow!).
Where is this "visual batter's eye" option? Is it like MVP 2005 where the pitch would flash a certain color based on whether it was offspeed, etc.?

I believe he means "Plate Coverage Indicator".

Oh, okay. Thanks for the clarification. I missed that option from MVP 2005. People say you can tell the spin of the ball out of the pitcher's hand in this game, but I don't think my vision is that good. I wonder how real baseball players do it heh.

Re: Hitting in 09 is a tad too difficult

Hrm, I tried his suggestion about bumping up to All-Star and then slowing down the pitch speed a bit (two clicks for me) and I've hit four homers so far against Kazmir. One by Nady, and then back-to-back-to-back homers with Damon, Jeter, and Teixeira. Maybe I'm getting the hang of this hitting after all

Edit: Of course, A-Rod then K'd swinging heh.

Get ready to call BS: Beltran and Piazza were doing this drill a few years ago where they'd have a ball machine fire balls at them and they'd have to call out the numbers that were written on them. Also it's common knowledge guys look for the eye on sliders and other such ridiculousness. These guys generally have very good vision.

I really liked the batter's eye feature. What was best about it was it made pitchers with only two or three total pitches a lot worse than guys who could throw a few different breaking balls. Relievers with two pitches? Sit on the fastball and knock it around the park.

I think he meant in the video game. I heard about that drill in real life though, it's pretty sick. I believe Beltran started it back when he was still with the Royals. Or at least that was the first time I heard of it.

On a game-related note, if people can't tell the spin on the ball out of the pitcher's hand in the video game, how are people determining which kind of pitch is coming? Based on it's movement? Or do pitchers use different arm angles/release points for different pitches? Should I be paying more attention to that?

i've only played the demo so far and as for trying to tell whats coming it's difficult. With Hamels i was getting better at knowing when he was throwing his curve as it seemed to me that as soon as the ball left his hand it went a bit higher in the air whereas his fastball seemed to come on more of a downward angle but other than that i was guessing. Then again i might have been seeing things, lol.

EDIT*** I found if I turn the pitch count to "quick" it felt more like 08, just a suggestion for people having trouble.
Its actually great to have a challenge when hitting. Imagine a game where you could hit anything in the most difficult level? that would be boring.

So for the sake of Developers, no more posts like this one, this shouldnt get simplified unless you play on rookie. Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in a sport, and let that come through at least in one videogame.
