    Re: Fair Trades or Not?

The trade logic isn't great, but for those of us who just want to 'plug and play' with one team, it's not too bad...

It's just before the AS break in my O's 'chise (we stink, b/c of the crappy SP) and so far the only 'big' trades that were wack (IMHO) were because the NYY think they need to load up on outfielders!

They traded for Matusi (???) and Brad Hawpe...both deals were mostly prospects, but AJ Burnett was included in the Hawpe deal...

My "franchise rules" about trading are:

    1) You can only attempt to trade for guys on the other team's trading block

    2) Guys you put on the block can only be traded to teams with "interest"

    3) I also only allow myself to make one deal per season that involves MLB players and one additional deal that is made up of prospects or minor leaguers...

The Rays inexplicably wanted my struggling CP, M. Gonzales and were willing to give up SP D. Price for him, so call it cheese if you like, but I took the trade...

I play SP Matusz starts and sim the rest, so like real life, I'm the worst team in the MLB, due to starting pitching...

My relievers and bats are not that bad, so...WTF...

    It's a video game...

If anything, I guess a fourth "rule" would be not trading in the same division, but heck, I'm a huge Rays / Price fan...

Maybe the video game D. Price has a problem with the Rays mangement or living in FLA, or that crappy dome or...

      Re: Fair Trades or Not?

I'm actually starting to warm up a little to the "insane" trades (not the quantity though, theres just too many!). I mean why not see Adrian Gonzalez on the Royals or Pujols traded. Let's not forget Griffey was traded for cameron and tomko (reds) after going .285 with 48 HR and 134 RBI's. Most would freak today if they saw ryan howard put up those numbers then get traded by the phillies (in-game). But it's baseball, it happens. Also, if you see a great team like the yankees or phillies dealing EVERYONE just look around the league for former world series Marlins players. Rodriguez, Castillo, Cabrera, Lee, Willis, Burnett...all were on the Marlins at some point together, now on different teams. I guess now I can deal with the trades whether they really are "insane" or not. Just remember if they're not traded they'll be picked up by different teams in free agency . Plus, wouldn't you want Ryan Howard or Pujols on your team if you could get him?

What does concern me is multiple high ovr players in free agency. If some are 35-40 years old (like Dye and smoltz right now) then I'm ok with it, but I don't like to hear about david wright sitting on the free agen list for multiple years while in his low 30's.

Oh, and the house rules by King (previous post) are fantastic. I'm going to be using those myself now.

        Re: Fair Trades or Not?

Good post superjew. I would not be happy if there were no trades in my franchise. And so far I have not seen nearly as many trades as others have reported, but I am playing 1 team rather than 30 so that could have something to do with it. I am also playing every game rather than simming so I have no idea if that matters. I would be perplexed if the Yankees pulled a Marlins and started dumping players left and right, but that is only because I am so used to them have a payroll that is nearly as large as the bottom 20 teams combined. But what if the sons are greedier than the father and want to maximize profit by dumping salary? It would explain why Burnett gets traded despite the 4 years left on his contract. Besides, who wouldn't love to see the Yankees return to their 80's to mid 90's playoff drought?

          Re: Fair Trades or Not?

i was like u 1 team control guys who never wanted to give 30 team control a shot. Then i tried it this year because of the issues and its really no different at all. i still just control what my team does and thats it.

the only other thing i do is reject or approve trades. The cpu does everything else for the other teams. I may not like the trade logic at all, but i cant complain about it because i have the power to control it with the 30 team control.

and thats really the nice thing about franchise. Guys who want that surprise of the trades can use 1 team control. Others like me have 30 team control to over see everything.

            Re: Fair Trades or Not?

Cards, I definitely think single team control leads to LESS trades. I haven't fully explored this, but it does seem that way. It also allows you to follow the cliche' "ignorance is bliss"; if i dont know about the trade i can't complain about it. Also, as i stated earlier what's the difference between these guys being traded or signing with different teams in free agency. either way their on a different team. it can get boring having the same players on the same team every year (although i like seeing career team players ala Jeter).

Maynard, I do use 30 team control, and for three reasons.
            1) I can play any game with any team (sometimes playing with the same team can get boring)
            2) IF there is a trade i just can't stand or if pujols gets traded EVERY year (hasn't happened, but I'm just sayin') then I can fix that.
            3) Should the free agency "glitch" come into effect whereas top overall players get left in the free agent pool for several years (cough NHL 10 cough) then I can fix that as well.

The only problem I have with 30 team control is loading times. Season simming is longer as well as offseason. And theres a 5-10 second delay when offering contracts (the screen kind of freezes since it has to update all 30 teams.) Oh, and 30 team control prevents the invalid roster bug some people get.

              Re: Fair Trades or Not?

Fallout from the D. Price / M. Gonzales trade:

Now that the Rays have two closers, they traded Soriano to the Giants for B. Molina

So, now that the Giants have Soriano and B. Wilson, I'm guessing they will trade Wilson?

Too much value (it seems) on OF and CP and not enough logic used to determine who's still in contention and who is not, before making moves, IMHO...

                  Re: Fair Trades or Not?

For those playing 30 team control, if you let trades go through, are they automatically accepted by the CPU? The reason I ask is because I just got a trade offer of a C potential prospect for Duchscherer and Andrew Bailey. Duke is 5th best player overall on my team and Bailey is the best and an A potential. I have to assume that the no CPU team would accept this offer. Perhaps it was a practical joke by the GM

                        Re: Fair Trades or Not?

I think your trades make sense.

As for me, I'm playing the role of "trade over lord" but, I'm mainly just talking guys like A.J. Burnett and company off the block. I especially don't want teams putting their key guys on the block when they're is still in contention.

So far, I've only allowed three trades to go through:

5/10- Boston sends 3b-Mike Lowell to Colorado for SP Tyler Matzek and LF Eric Young.

The way I look at it is Boston been struggling so far and Lowell wants to start even if it meant being traded. So, Boston let's him go for a 19 year old SP and a 24 year old, switch hitting 2b/LF both with A potential. Colorado get's a solid starting 3b replacing Ian Steward who wasn't cutting it at 3b.

5/16- Indians trade RP Joe Smith and C Wyatt Toregas to the Mets for RP Kelvim Escobar.

Indian's are two games out in their division and Kerry Wood is injured. Therefore Cleveland was willing to part with a 25 year old, C rated, pitcher and a 27 year old, C potential, Catcher to nab Escobar as their new closer. The Met's are 2nd from last in their division so they are either already looking to cut payroll as they saved 2 million on this deal or Escobar may be unhappy with his role and want out of town. Either way the deal made sense.

5/17- Phillies trade CF Anthony Goze and RF Domonic Brown to the Yankee's for 1b Juan Miranda and C Jesus Montero

Yankee's get two young old fielder's one with B potenial and the other with A potential. Brown stay's with the MLB club to help with OF depth. Goze was send to AAA and is starting in CF and batting lead-off.
For the Philly's they're currently battling the Met's for last place in the NL East. But, they were able to get their Catcher of the Future in Montero and a inexpensive 1b who could possibly see some time in the Major's in a back-up role. They also, saved about 300k on the deal.

After those three trades I decided to turn trades off until the middle of June. The date now is 5/28 so, I'll have more input in a week or two.

crawford is a amazing player why wait for posey to develope when you have one of the best OF being offered to you. With the lack of hitting on the giants and you being in the hunt i defiantly do this deal and try to resign him right away. If you cant hey you get two 1st rounders

I would make the trade but like someone said, make sure you can sign Crawford long term.

If you trade away some prospects and loose Crawford at the end of the year (and you didnt even win a WS), you just lost big time.
