What is with the outfielder animations in this game?

I love MLB the Show. It's the most realistic and best sports game on the market. That being said, what the hell are the developers thinking with the outfield animations?

    1. The climb of the wall. It totally disregards the height of the wall. If it's a really high wall, the animation still shows the OF running up and seemingly grabbing on to the top of the wall (even though they're somewhere in the middle). And if it's really low (like Boston's right field), the OF will climb to a secondary level of the wall where there actually is no wall and grab on to air.

    2. If the ball bounces off the wall, I sure hope you don't have to get it into the infield in a hurry. They often times stumble around, take their time, and do two or three pumps even if you have the throw meter going the whole time before he even gets to it.

Any way to combat these two oddities that occur every single game?

Trying to make a balanced video game.

It's a video game, we can't capture wall climb animations for every single wall height in the game. It's a limitation of game development.

Does this not happen in real life?

what about the outfielder slow downs that I talked about in my thread? those not anything close to something that happens in real life. the slowdown animations and unrealistic stuff really kills gameplay sometimes. making this game play as true to real life as possible should be the number 1 priority, even if those "balance" things like COW get left out.

Russell you must not watch real baseball. In real life the outfielders grab the ball instantly, then just open their wings and fly over to the infield, and clear the basepaths with their deadly heat vision. That's all he's talking about.

In all seriousness though I don't think the animations at the wall are poor at all. My only real complaint is that there is no sense of depth perception out there, and while the CPU knows where to play the ball off the hop, and whether to jump for a ball at the wall or not, I have to completely guess, and I often times end up just running in circles until the ball ends up in my hands. Nothing to do with animations really, but it would be nice if there was another "fielder catch circle" for where the ball was going to land after bouncing/hitting a wall, or if the shadows of the ball were more accurate/readable.

I encounter the same problem with balls hit straight up in the air at the plate (after bouncing), I have no idea where to stand, so I just take my catcher and run around randomly, and hope I find the ball in time to throw to first.

I digress though, my point is there aren't really any problems with the fielding animations at the walls

I must be living in bizarro world or something then... because 95% of the time when a ball is hit to the wall, my OF will grab it, and if he's within 5-6 of the wall, he'll run to it and stick his arms out... then he'll pause for a full 2 seconds, double pump and THEN throw it in. Basically the OF acts as though no one is running the bases and about to score.

I'm not complaining to be a jerk... this game is almost perfect. Which is why this animation confuses and angers me so much.

Thanks for your response Russell. To answer you...

What do you mean by "trying to make a balanced video game" in terms of my animations question?

I wasn't aware wall height was a limitation of game development. You guys create such a realistic game I honestly figured that would be a pretty easy thing to do. Of course though, I have no real knowledge of game development.

And no, the animations I'm seeing don't happen in real life. Perhaps I'm not describing it well, but the players are often VERY nonchalant about getting the ball back to the infield. And like I said above, they jog over to the wall that's a good 5-6 feet away and just rest their arms against it for a few seconds before deciding to play baseball.

Again, not trying to complain. Love the game. It's just probably the one thing that consistently bugs me so I wanted to see if I was doing something wrong or if that's just the way the OF animations go.

                Thanks again.

Perhaps you have a higher intellect... but what does that mean? I don't understand what the answer means in reference to my question. The outfielders having odd animations is to make the game more balanced?

I know what you're saying, I've seen it before (running to the wall when they can just stop and throw it in instead.) It's annoying and I'm not sure why they do it, but it happens not all that often so I've just let it go.

Robbing a home run is a little bit too impossible. I would say Outfielder play around the wall is a bit hopeless and inconsistent; I love the game but its a fair statement from someone who has been a long-time player

In my Sox franchise im playing the Yankees and down 4-1 in the 9th, Soriano is up with 2 runners on and Ortiz batting. I smoked a pitch into right field and Nick Swisher jumps on the wall (the thin rf at Fenway) stands fully balanced and then proceeds to run up the air, extend his arm, and wait for the HR to catch and float down. BS animation made me lose 4-2.

Are you talking about this year's game? I'll admit that wall suction was prevalent in last year's game, but not this year's. For example, if the ball is at or near the base of the wall and you direct your player over to it, if you preload your throw before you pick up the ball, he will plant, turn and fire it towards the infield. I've thrown out several guys trying to stretch a hit into a double like that in this year's game.

Is it easier to just exaggerate to get your point across?
