Re: MLB 12 playable at Best Buy
I was able to catch a few innings this evening at my local BestBuy and I have to say I'm psyched. From my own perspective, I was spending most of my time enjoying the little things that are going to make this game a must have.
The presentation alone had subtle changes that really enhanced the user experience. The overlays, the ball motions, the pace of game ... all just brought a great quality that I find MLB 11 was lacking to really bring the series to the next level.
The gameplay was also top-notch. Everything on the fielding, hitting and pitching sides were enhanced enough to be noticeable, but not distracting. I especially liked the collision dynamics and a few new player animations I noticed.
I'm a bit bummed that there is no demo, since going to my "local"
BestBuy is about 30 minutes away, but the time I spent this evening with the game simply solidified my pre-order for 3/6. Can't wait to get my franchise started.Comment

Re: MLB 12 playable at Best Buy
The post game highlights has the video game's name flashed (briefly covering most of the screen) at the beginning of each and every play shown. Very distracting. San Diego Studios, would you consider only doing this when the highlights are saved to file? I know you deserve credit when it is put online like on Youtube, but how about some compromise here?Last edited by ahoythere; 02-28-2012, 10:50 PM.Comment

Re: MLB 12 playable at Best Buy
For all of my ATLiens Best Buy at the Edgewood Shopping Center, east of Downtown Atlanta has the Show 12 kiosk. It was empty as I expected. Someone was playing Braves vs. Yankees. I played a few innings Nats vs. Braves. I turned a few heads of people who were in the store.
First of all I want to say people still dont know about this game, maybe its a baseball thing. Someone said that looks so real. They knew it was Turner Field. A couple was looking at video game systems stopped by while I was playing for about 3 minutes.
To the gameplay: It is true. Once you played 12' it is hard to go back 11'. Game looks the same. It just feels different. The men on the field moves and reacts different from last year. The Nats had Startsburg on the mound. Bottom of the 1st Chipper at the bat. The guys talked about Iconic accomplishments. Sweeet. I promptly worked the count with the soon be HOFamer 3-1 count, contact swing, on a sinker away, deposited in the lft cntr gap. Freeman strikes out. Up next Uggla, I guess the pitch of fastball on the inside part of the plate. He clobbers it deep left center gap for 2 bagger. Up next B-Mac with Uggs @ 2nd. I worked the count 3-1, high fast ball, B-mac crushes the ball deep over the power alley between the rght cntr 390ft. Very nice display on the videoboard. He rounded the bases. New celebration at homeplate. Very nice. Cant wait....Comment

Re: MLB 12 playable at Best Buy
Does anybody who has played the game know if there is setting to make it where you cant skip the cut scenes?? I'm really impressed with them and love the feel I am getting from the gameplay videos, however I know when i have the ability to click X and keep the action going I instinctively take it. If its not an option, maybe an idea for next year
Thanks!Last edited by skemp09; 02-28-2012, 11:57 PM.Comment

Re: MLB 12 playable at Best Buy
I saw the game at my Best Buy and was tempted to play, but it was already in Home Run Derby mode using the Move, and I just simply didn't want to spoil myself... especially when the TV was in torch mode and made the game look like crap.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: MLB 12 playable at Best Buy
I went to a Best Buy in Colorado Springs earlier today. Unfortunately, if I had tried to use my cell phone camera, the phone would have spontaneously combusted. So, all I have are my impressions.
I was unable to answer my own question about co-op, since Best Buy only had one controller set up, and you need two to get into co-op mode (obviously). And, by the way, the controller they had set up was the worst, piece-of-crap, controller I've ever seen. I had to use my pinky to push the start button, because it's the only finger that would fit into the crack where the button was broken and sunk-in. I also had to push every button with authority, or it wouldn't register that I pushed anything. It wasn't easy.
The first thing I did, was jump into franchise mode, and sim to the World Series. My Rockies finished 81-81.The division winners were the Diamondbacks, Cardinals, Marlins, Angels, Tigers, and Yankees. For some reason, I can't remember who the Wildcard teams were...The World Series was between the Tigers and Marlins (I can't see that at all). The Tigers ended up winning in six games. I watched the end of the last game, and the celebration was almost identical to previous years. The only difference I think I noticed, was the players jumping out of the dugout and into the dog-pile a little faster, which made them seem slightly more excited than previous years.
Then, I backed out to exhibition mode, and played a game between the Rockies and Rangers at Coors Field. I was pretty dissapointed with Coors Field. I didn't really notice any differences from last year. The 2007 pennant is still not there, and the fountain in center is also still not there. It's pretty dissapointing, considering the pennant has been there for five years, and the fountain has been there since the park's inception seventeen years ago. I had put both on my '12 wish list at theshownation.com. Does that site basically get ignored? Should I make sure to put my requests here from now on? I'm not trying to throw the devs under the bus, or anything. I know they are very busy with requests every year, and the Rockies are not exactly a big market team. I'm just curious, and want to know for future reference.
I batted through the Rockies lineup once. I hit a 454 foot bomb to dead center with Tulowitzki, and the jumbotron flashed "TU-LO" the same way it flashed "PAPI" in the Redsox, Yankees video. When Helton came up, the OSD noted that he was the all-time team leader, with 354 homeruns. I don't know if that will update every time he hits one in franchise. When Cuddyer came up, the OSD noted that he had spent the previous x years (11...?) with the Twins. When I doubled with Cuddyer, the announcers said something like, "It's really weird to see Cuddyer out of a Twins uniform. But, his new team loves having him, and he comes through here with a double."
After one time through the lineup, I fast forwarded to the bottom of the ninth. The Rockies were losing 6-5, and Rex Brothers was the first man up. So, I pinch hit Giambi for him, and he lined a frozen rope off the very top of the right field wall for...a single! lol! Slowpoke! It was actually very realistic. I doubt Fowler would have got to second, with how hard it was hit. Fowler then doubled to right center, and Giambi was barely safe sliding in to home to tie the game at 6. Marco Scutaro grounded out, and Fowler moved up to third. With CarGo batting, there was a wild pitch, and Fowler barely slid in safely for the winning run. CarGo looked on like he didn't care, and there was absolutely no celebration...uh...what...? Hopefully, it was only because it was a wild pitch, and any kind of hit would have resulted in a celebration. After all of the replays, there were fireworks, which I was hoping were gone. Oh well.
A few other things I noted:
- I didn't like the sounds of the bat, ball, and gloves much in the videos I've seen. But, in person, they sounded spot on. I'd imagine everyone will have to adjust the volume of everything for personal preference, and then they'll love it.
- The presentation felt very life-like. I found myself skipping a lot, because I wanted to get through as much as possible. But, I found myself thinking, "Man, when I get this home, into 720p, and have time to sit back and relax, this will be a thing of beauty."
- The lineup logic seems MUCH improved. I looked at the Rockies lineup in franchise mode (after Spring Training), and there were only two differences from how I expect their real Opening Day lineup to look. Neither difference seemed far fetched. I could easily see them both as "legitimate". They swapped Tulo and CarGo (Tulo 3rd, CarGo 4th), and they swapped Helton and Cuddyer (Helton 5th, Cuddyer 6th).
I'd definitely say it's worth the price of admission.Last edited by Kalkano; 02-29-2012, 12:56 AM.Comment

Re: MLB 12 playable at Best Buy
I'll pass on this one. Shaking off the catcher has little to do with confidence being impacted. Back in my day when I pitched there was no such issue. The catcher gives a suggestion and the pitcher holds the trump card. There is no emotion or personal pride that interaction. To add it to The Show would be gimmicky and arcade.
As a catcher I take pride in studying the hitters and trying to get inside their heads and figure them out, it's extremely frustrating when you aren't on the same page as your pitcher and are constantly being shaken off.Comment
