Re: MLB 12 The Show - PS3 Impressions Thread

Alright. I finally was able to play a game! I picked this up along with Mass Effect 3 last night after my sons ball game and was too wiped out. So this morning I woke up early, installed the 10G option (do this!) and watched the awesome intro!

So I went ahead and folled around with pulse pitching in some practice. I realized right away I don't care for it. great idea....but it is too busy and takes away from my immersion. I love classic pitching....it's as simple as that. I play in broadcast view when I pitch and I love the organic and clean look as well as the ratings driven aspect. I love that SCEA understands that adding new controls is great, but do not take away what others love and are happy with. Something EA should learn with some of their sports titles.

So I went into the gameplay menu and set everything up just like I did for The Show 11 with the one exception of using the default batting view. I wanted to see how it looked and play with it for at least 5-6 games to see if it indeed is a big improvement. After one game I can say it is a major positive. Judgung the low pitches is much easier now on default.

All-Star timed hitting and classic pitching. I did not touch one single slider. And I won't till after getting at least 12-15 games as a sample size. I want to just play and feel everything out as I wait for both the OSFM and J.Meyers 1987 Full Minors set.

So my first and only game so far was Cubs at Marlins.

Right of the bat while just throwing my warm up pitches I already see, feel and hear the polish. If your a hardcore Show player (which most of us here are) the new glove sounds pop out. I love....just absolutely love the fact that this year you can clearly see the pitchers ball grips. What amazing attention to detail on that front. The ball spin is so clear now as well. Both when it is pitched and when you get the throw back from the catcher.

Josh Johnson gave up a lead off single and the ball physics jumped off the screen. This game is now on another level. I can't stress how much better The Show 12 is just for this fact alone. It is a total game changer and because of the life like ball physics we are playing a true game of virtual baseball. I saw a chopper up the middle, the trajectory of looping fly balls, foul balls....insane. Classic pitching is smooth and unchanged and just a joy as always.

At the plate Jose Reyes. I fall behind to Garza 0-2 and work the count to 3-2....I end up hitting an opposite field single after a 14 pitch battle in my first AB with The Show 12. This game is a dream.

I turned a silky smooth DP to end the 2nd inning. I am seeing and hearing things clearly. The feel of the ball off the bat feels so different now. Words cannot describe, nor give it justice. You have to play it yourself to understand the subtle yet monumental differences that the new ball physics and yes the new and revamped sound effects have brought to the table. I stroked a double in the gap with Mike Stanton and man it felt so sweet. Then I hit a dribbler with Infante and it felt like a weak off the handle hit. It feels so different!!!

    SCEA......amazing job.

This is one game. But I already know. And once I start my Marlins Franchise with the OSFM I will report back all the great enhancements with commentary and OSD's in franchise.

If you were on the fence as I clearly was about holding off on The Show 12. Take the plunge. I felt 2011 was an amazing game.

It is not playable anymore. The only way I go back is if that 1987 roster set is not created again (come on JMeyers.....you can do it!) so I can revel in my retro baseball glory.

But as far as modern day franchise....there is no going back to 11.

The Show 2012 is the best baseball game of all time.

Yes after one game I can say this. I have played every basball game you can think of over the last 32 years. There is not a single doubt in my mind this is the most realisitc baseball video game I have ever played.

    BALL PHYSICS PEOPLE!!!!!

    GAME CHANGER!

    Bravo SCEA!!!!

Have they updated the Manage Only Mode? OR does it still exist? Any impressions from anyone on this mode?

I love the game but a few things stick out to me. 1 is when you play night games it took me till the 8th inning to get to dark, and also some stuff at Wrigley, no flags on the scoreboard or foul poles. I got the game last night so Ive only played 1 game and wow I sucked ha Danks struck my Cubs out 17 times and only gave up 3 hits.

The only thing so far with this game that has annoyed me is the fact that pitchers have the world's fastest reaction time when it comes to balls up the middle. I can't send anything back up the middle whether it be a hard line drive or a hard, low grounder. It's like the pitcher's glove has a vacuum in it.

I've seen dribblers up the middle that get by pitchers.

Give it time or small sample size. In three games I've seen a handful of balls up the middle (much less than previous versions) and only once has the pitcher fielded it.

I don't see this at all, I often get hits up the middle.

A&S, pretty much identical impressions between us. Not very surprising, though, right?

Dude, I played a random game last night ... Cubs vs. Marlins. That's crazy! I won 6-2. That new stadium is sweet.

I'm thinking that I won't have to touch any sliders this year. The CPU throws more than enough balls, and while I still swing at a few too many pitches outside of the strike zone, I did work Garza for 3 walks and forced him to throw over 80 pitches by the fifth inning.

The only thing I'm keeping my eye on is HUM Pitching Difficulty. I may need to go up to HOF, but I'll keep it at AS for a few more games and see where I stand. Classic pitching is great.

I did see a cool cut scene after a rbi double, they showed the player who scored, high fiving in the dugout.

into 2014 as a tester, havent seen any OSDS showing top leaders in a stat category from the previous season.
Hopefully its not only the initial year that you see it.

I can tell you that here in Cincy IRL the night games start at 7pm and it doesnt get dark till about 930 or so which is usually the 7th or 8th inning.

This is true in summer. I believe in MLB 11 when you play franchise in April its ALREADY dark when game starts at 7 because thats how it is in real life.

I think Exhibition games uses "Summer" as the season regardless of temp outside. I believe when you play Season or Franchise you will see it dark early in April and October, and brighter longer during the Summer days.

I was playing an exhibition game between the Orioles and Red Sox. My brother walks in to the room real quick, takes a glance at the TV and says, "I didn't know the Sox played the O's today." Obviously once he looked closer he could see it was a video game, but still.

If your game can pass as a real life sporting event, you're doing something right.

I'm one of those who bought a PS3 in 2009 just for The Show. And I've never regretted it.

                              Things I Love:
                              > Ball physics are incredibly real. It feels like a completely new game because of this. It makes some of the ball movements/reactions in '11 seem so canned.

                              > Pulse Pitching. Finally, walks happen and you can't push a mediocre pitcher into stardom just by mastering the meter or analog stick. I know it frustrates some players, but I really dig the "loose" part of this feature. You can't always throw it where you want - and this feature brings that to life.

                              > Graphics and lighting are a notch up. It's hard to make something that's already amazing look even more amazing.

                              > Load times. Holy sweet you know what. The stalls/load times/save times are all so much better. (10GB install)

                              > Fielding seems easier and more fluid. I used Auto Fielding in '10 and '11 because it was frustrating making bonehead mistakes to cost myself a game.

                              Things I Don't Like
                              > The franchise/season thing where all games are either 7pm on weekdays or 1pm on the weekends. Nothing like those opening day shadows at Camden Yards or Busch Stadium.

                              > I kinda wish they figured out a way to randomize whether retractable domed stadiums were open or closed.

                              > Base running has been a little more frustrating. Not sure if it's just me or the game. Maybe I need to get in the flow more.

                              > Trades are still a bit weird. I simmed a franchise season and the Cards traded Molina for a couple mediocre relievers? And it seemed like every single star on teams not in contention were on the trading block. Dreading 30-team control once again.

                              Overall:
Love it. 9/10. Once (hopefully) they fix the timing bug for franchise/season, I'm stoked to get started with my O's and Cards.

                                Love everything except:

I don't like how after a pitch it cuts back to the action before the batter is completely set for the next pitch. That's not trubroadcast.Last year RTP played everything out.
