Re: MLB 12 The Show - Impressions Thread
Just finished a game as the Indians at home against the Tigers. Pitched with Masterson, and went up against Scherzer. Some thoughts, kind of all over the place:
- the ball physics as a game changer can't be overstated, honestly. In years past, playing a ball off the wall was a bit of crapshoot because something about the way the ball came off the wall seemed, well, off. I played a few balls off the wall in this last game absolutely beautifully, because for the most part, the ball did what it was "supposed" to do based on what we perceive to be physics. Some still kicked off funny but that's the nature of baseball and some of the angles the walls in some ballparks have.
- I know many aren't fond of the commentary. I personally like it and though not as good as either NBA 2K or MLB 2K, I think The Show's commentary falls comfortably in 3rd behind the two above. Having said THAT, I wish the commentators focused less on borderline calls. When you watch a baseball telecast, very rarely will the PbP guy or analyst comment on the strike zone unless its a big moment or sometimes when it leads to a walk or a K. They mostly chalk it up to it being baseball and the umps' zone etc etc. In The Show, they comment on EVERY borderline call and it gets tiresome. If there were one change I would ask for with the commentary, more than I think Dave Campbell needs replacing, I would ask for the comments about the strike zone to be toned way, way down.
- another aspect that I wish were fine-tuned is when I replace my starter after he's pitched an excellent game. I had Masterson go 7 1/3 of shutout ball and when I replaced him, yeah, they focused on him walking to the dugout and he tipped his cap...but it didn't seem right. First off, the crowd was barely above silent. Secondly, they did a tight, close-up shot of the pitcher where you would normally see a wide angle shot of the pitcher walking towards the dugout, with the crowd in full view. Would be cool to see next year.
- really liking the "whip" on the pitchers' arms just before release. Looks almost perfect.
- I've settled in with Analog pitching on All-Star and, for the time-being, Pure Analog for batting on All-Star. I may have to bump both up as I pitched a shutout against the Tigers (could be a one-off though) and most of my runs are of the long-ball variety (this has been true in the almost-three games I've played). Who knows, though, might just need a tiny tweak to a slider or two...but that's not my forte lol.
- the fielding is just so much better than last year. Everythhing flows a little better and even though its still animation-driven, they've seemed to have added so many that it accounts for almost every situation. I've taken bad angles to a ball and been punished accordingly and I've taken good angles with the same player and been rewarded as well. Its really fun to play defence knowing that the ratings matter and what YOU do matters as well.
Anyway, I want to keep playing Exhibition games but the pull of RTTS is getting to be too much to take lol. May start one of those shortly.Comment

Re: MLB 12 The Show - Impressions Thread
I actually started a RTTS last night as a CF. Got drafted by Braves.
Only played one game but you absolutely "feel" like a better player than in the past games when starting out.
Oh and I almost forgot to mention that I believe my "depth perception" recognizing low pitches is a thing of the past. Part is new camera angle maybe but I think the big thing is I can read the break of the pitches MUCH better and know when to lay off.
Except for Lincecum's freaking curve ball in my one game.Joshua:

Re: MLB 12 The Show - Impressions Thread
Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the most out of the games by use of calibrating your TV? I have messed around with various sets on the internet but wanted to see if anyone on here knew.
So far the game plays really smooth and feels very fresh. This is not just a roster update.Comment

Re: MLB 12 The Show - PS3 Impressions Thread
Have to step out a bit but i did download the update and then tried Move batting. I was disappointed. While not as Laggy you still need to swing pretty much when pitcher releases ball or right after.
The extra time it takes to actually swing instead of just hitting a button is the difference.
I'll try again later but I already have pitch speed down 3 from default. We'll see...Joshua:

So, I have a lot more to say about the game as I've played 3 more full games since I last posted. But I just checked the CAP and went through the audio names...and mine is in!! Pronounced by Matty V. PERFECTLY (no small feat). Almost brought a tear to this man's eyes

Oh man what a game.
You can just feel the fear in the CPU pitching when guys like Bautista/Lawrie come up, and its about twice as bad when you're using pulse pitching with the bases loaded and Cabrera/Fielder/etc up for them.
I'm pretty much calling this game a better MLB '11 with MVP's ball physics. So good.
Tomorrow I will take a quick run through dynasty (unless someone beats me to it) and look at the draft/trade system/FA logic.Blue Jays, Blackhawks, AuburnComment

Simmed into 2018...no notable free agent sitting unsigned. The ball physics are great as everyone has already stated. I had to jack my hitting to hof.
I use zone classic btw and actually had trouble last year on all star.Comment

With my wife and 2 kids taking up so much of time, (and the Flames have played he last two nights) I haven't had a lot of time to get into the game, but I should get a few uninterrupted hours, so if people have questions that are quick to check and answer, I can answer tomorrow midday-ish.Comment

Re: MLB 12 The Show - PS3 Impressions Thread
Alright, so I was getting worried that most of my runs were going to be courtesy of the homerun and that the game was getting a bit too easy in general. I still haven't lost on All-Star, so I will have to bump up to HOF in time but the games haven't lacked variety that's for sure. Played as the Dbacks against the Dodgers, using Cahill and facing Lilly. It was a STRUGGLE to hit for some reason but my pitching was lights out. Ended up winning 1-0, giving up 5 hits and getting 6 myself. I was encouraged to see hitting was tough but getting worried that pitching was starting to get too easy on All-Star, after also shutting out the Tigers in my previous game and not using the ace of any team's either.
Well, the next game put those fears to rest. I used the Jays against the Twins, going up against Blackburn and using the Jays' ace Romero myself. It was a crazy game, ended up winning 15-8...but only hitting two homeruns and truly earning the rest as I walked 7 times. More importantly, Romero got SHELLED for all 8 runs through the first 4 innings, with the bullpen holding the fort the rest of the way. It was nice to see myself struggling with a top pitcher, even on All-Star. Like I said, I'll definitely settle in with HOF batting and pitching shortly but its great to see the variety even on the "default" difficulty.
Dove in to RTTS as a SP (how could I not after discovering my name in the audio lol) and there isn't a HUGE difference from year's past. However, two things stand out. 1) the menus have been touched up and look great and 2) you definitely "feel" like a better, more important player starting out than before. Obviously, the terrific ball physics carry over nicely into this mode as well. All in all, looking forward to grabbing the OS rosters and eventually making my RF like every year.
Some random thoughts to go along with what I said above: the new bullpen management options are probably going to end up being the most under-rated addition to the game. I'm, admittedly, a space cadet when it comes to my bullpen at times. This allows me to more easily plan out what I want to do and its easier to recover from forgetting about the bullpen at the wrong times. Really nice add.
The more I play, the more I'm recognizing the good and bad fielders. Its terrifying once you know where the poor fielders are and having a hard hit ball go to them. Adam Lind and I are not on good terms right now lol.
No game is perfect and I have some minor gripes with it that come up every now and then but once again, SCEA has created the best representation of its chosen sport this side of FIFA. Done for the night but I'll be squeezing in as much Show time over a busy weekend as humanely possible.Comment

Re: MLB 12 The Show - Impressions Thread
Just experienced an awesome play and a weird one. Zambrano ripped one at LaHair, he got short hopped and it skipped up, Barney was behind him to field it and throw him out. Not so good part. Inning before, I hit a pop up behind the catcher, and he didn't even go for it. It was maybe 10 feet from him.Joshua:

Re: MLB 12 The Show - Impressions Thread
I have to agree with this, I've seen some really high bounces on choppers to the backstop. Again, things that were non-existant in previous years with the lack of ball physics.Comment
