Re: MLB 12 The Show - PS3 Impressions Thread

Last year there would be a slight hitch during games every so often like every 10-20 pitches or something. Having the game since Thursday, I can say I've yet to experience this once this year.

Other gameplay things that I'm pretty sure never could happen before this year:

Base hit to LF, runner coming home and the throw from LF is up the 3B line in foul territory cather gets the ball and just misses the runner with a sweeping stretch tag I've never seen before as he scores.

Line drive off the pitcher that kicks about 20ft in the air for the 3B to come in and make the easy catch for the out. (this was in good at bat training so injuries don't apply)

Hit a ball hard to the 3B side of the pitcher's mound, it bounces once then hits the side of the pitcher's mound and kicks in the air about 30ft and landed in shallow CF.

For people wondering about balls back up the middle hitting the pitcher. I would say the frenquency of hits back up the middle is the same which is a small negative for me. What I can't answer at this point is whether the pitchers have gotten better at catching/getting out of the way of said hits.

Re: MLB 12 The Show - PS3 Impressions Thread

First game played (after an hour in the batting cage to get my timing and flow back, was way off when i started lol) and i can only say this...

This is the game we have all been waiting years for.

As has been said a million times, the new ball physics have to be seen to be believed, its truly a thing of beauty and adds an indescribable amount of authenticity to the game.

The graphics overall are improved, sharper than ever, especially the ballpark backdrops, overlays, scorebug, all looks very much like a TV broadcast, and TruBroadcast Pres really adds to this.

I went with HOF all the way, lost the game 4-3 as the Nats to the Mets but it was still a great joy, Santana and Strasburg dominated with 15k's between them, most of the runs coming off both teams pens.

42, Enigma - i have to say ar first i struggled to get the timing right on Pulse Pitching, by the end i was definately falling in love lol, its a great system that rewards accuracy but punishes mistakes, as it should do, and i love seeing the animations play out in full....im sold!

Overall, if anyone whos not really familiar with this series was to look at a game from last year then one from this year, its easy to fall into a trap of thinking "its basically the same, nothings changed" but those of us who are vets of the series know different, the game may not look visually strikingly different (but as i said, it is sharper imo) but plays very differently thanks to the many under the hood changes.

You will only really appreciate the fluid improvement from 11 to 12 when you play it.

Its another great Show filled year in store folks!

Great impressions Psycho... Glad you are enjoying it.

Also delighted to see you are falling in love with Pulse Pitching. I truly do love it. And will only get better in future iterations.

All the additions they did truly makes the game feel so fresh and new.

Re: MLB 12 The Show - PS3 Impressions Thread

Played a game up at Best Buy and I was impressed. I did like the little cutscenes. At first I was wondering why my pitcher wasn't throwing right away. Then I picked up on that I wasn't using what the catcher suggested. (Cool new thing for me). I like how when the players come to the plate they don't show the player face card, that way if he's not wearing the team Cap it doesn't distract me. Loved the stats for example: Youkilis 3-20 off of Sabathia. That's a good add. Even saw a suicide squeeze with bases loaded.

Pitching was tougher for me, mind you I only play on All-Star. One game with Pineda I was up to 30 pitches in one inning and that rarely happened to me last year. I couldn't hit anything, probably because being at Best Buy I had no patience. Didn't really see the ball physics unless on a foul ball. I did see some glitches in animations around the head. Travis Hafner came up and Vasgergin started talking about Guerrero and how 3000 hits is in sight. Didn't understand that.

Overall I was happy about what I saw, except the CPU owning me. Graphics looked even more crisper. I'm still not happy with the Shows HR trot, I can't say enough about how cool it looks when you have the heroic camera angle follow the player into the dugout.

I will be picking up @ midnight.

Re: MLB 12 The Show - PS3 Impressions Thread

With the avalanche (I hope as I like reading them) of impressions coming tonight, I thought I'd post final thoughts.
Every game there is a honeymoon period where everything is grand due to newness and glazed over eyes.
Well for me the honeymoon is over with MLB 12.

I am now set for the second best marriage of my life.
The game continues to wow me and I am excited each time I fire it up.
Who's the matchup? Where are they weak defensively? Who's hot at the plate? etc...
I love how these things are even more important with the 2012 edition.

I know there are a lot of (like me) slider addicts that need to play 20-30 games..tweak and repeat but I for one am positive that FOR ME, HOF out of the box with MIMIMAL changes is golden.

I'm pretty much set on THESE. I'll probably play a lot of RTTS now while rosters are getting made.

Anyways, that's it. For those who have not had the chance yet to play... enjoy it you are in for a real treat!!

The graphics are amazing, my brother walked in during a cut scene and thought it was a real game.

Really impressed with the new ball physics and the broadcast presentation...although the TBP still needs a few tweaks here and there it is a welcome addition.

Out of the box I think the sliders play a good, solid game. I'm from the cpu v cpu crowd and without adjusting any sliders I've watched through 3 totally different ball games and have been pleased with the results....now some tweaking may take place later down the line, but I don't think we're going to need to much, if any.

So far from a cpu v cpu point of view, it's a step up from 11, I'm really pleased.

Played two spring training games and can't get over how the ball reacts now! I know everyone said it, but until you play see it you don't realize how big of a difference it makes.

Game is outstanding overall, but the best part is getting my name in the last name audio database! Hearing Matt V. pronounce Michmerhuizen exactly as it should be pronounced is something I never thought would happen in a video game. Best game ever!!

Re: MLB 12 The Show - PS3 Impressions Thread

Similar to Sky, I'm going to post a couple of more thoughts and then stay out of the way of everyone else's impressions.

I played two more games before work today, one as the Pirates against the Cubs, second one as the Dodgers against the Marlins. My previous fears that it was getting too easy to hit were thrown back in my face as I lost 2-1 to the Cubs, with 6 hits, and lost 5-0 to the Marlins, with Nolasco getting a 4 hit complete game shutout.

This game is for real. I've seen so many great things. I've seen first baseman make poor feeds to the pitcher covering 1B, leading to errors. I've seen poorer OF'ers misplay balls off the wall. I've even seen a SS drop a throw from the catcher on a SB attempt, in a classic "took his eye off the ball" play. This game, animation-driven or not, is as organic as it comes at this point as far as baseball is concerned. The amount of different scenarios that the engine accounts for is astounding, perfectly complemented by the ball physics this year.

I'm not sure I'll be able to wait for the OS rosters to start either a Franchise, RTTS...or both. This game is that good and has me by the balls that much, excuse the language. The lighting is so beautiful to look at, I've pretty much played all night games so I can battle the shadows at the plate like players do in real life. I've set up all sorts of pitching matchups to see how "robotic" they may be and in that Dodgers game against the Marlins, Billingsley couldn't get out of the 5th. This is with Analog pitching, which some on here say is too easy to dominate with. I challenge you to use API-driven, HOF Analog pitching in this game and NOT take your share of lumps. There isn't a sports game out there that blends ratings and user input so seamlessly and so perfectly. It's a thing of beauty.

I already know some will say that there isn't THAT much of a difference between last year and this year's game. Granted, no ONE thing stands out to make one think that way (though the ball physics come close). As a package of ball physics + fielding changes + TBP + Pulse Pitching + ZAB + all the other little things that you'll come across in your first few days with the game....that all equals the biggest leap forward in this series since the jump from 08 to 09, IMO. And I haven't even been able to touch Diamond Dynasty yet, which is the only reason I think I've stayed away from starting a Franchise.

Happy gaming fellas. We are truly spoiled with this game.

                              Blasphemy!

Okay...like others, I'll get in one last impression from a couple of games I got in yesterday.
The pace of the new total broadcast is EXCELLENT. Even my manage only mode games...with no X'ing to the next scene seemed to move along at a better pace.
(although....I have seen a few hiccups. I know it's first year hiccups, so I'm not worried.)
The addition of all the new fielding animations are also pushing this game into a new area of greatness. It's very organic as others have said.
Again...the new OSD's....a really nice addition. SCEA...just keep adding them ...anywhere and everywhere. Don't worry, it will NEVER be too much!(IMO)
I did see one small bug. Game 8 of a franchise....I forget what batter ...it showed his avg. and that he had 0 HR's and 2 RBI...but it said "in 114 games". It was definitely referencing last year but showing this year's stats. Something to keep an eye on.

                              Looking really, really good.

is anyone else having the problem where you cant redeem your online pass?

besides not being able to start playing diamond dynasty this game is really good. All the animations are quality, gameplay is very smooth, graphics are great, and its overall really fun.
