Re: MLB 12 The Show - All Hitting Tips

Okay, this is getting really frustrating. I'm in the third inning of a game and have already struck out seven times, mainly because on zone hitting, I can't follow through on my swings for some reason. I don't wanna play if I can only do check swings. This wasn't a problem when I first got the game, but why is it happening now? Is there a glitch?

And I got no-hit for the first time in my life. I think I realized I gotta use that yellow thing to aim so I can make contact, but that doesn't even work sometimes, particularly when sliders are thrown. What do I need to do? Just do batting practice for awhile? Swinging, much less hitting, shouldn't be this difficult. I know it's not that hard, but this is getting ridiculous.

Zone hitting is the antichrist, at least for me. I changed it back to timing after a few games.

FYI - this may not be your problem, but I experienced something similar...

I was check-swinging everything and it was frustrating the hell out of me. Come to find out it was a latency issue caused by my tv, receiver and ps3. I had to change the AVR to bypass video entirely (so it applies no processing) and put my TV in game mode.

What was happening is that by the time the video signal made it through the receiver to the TV (everything in my system runs through receiver) it was a fraction of a second behind....which is all it takes to make you think you're swinging on time when, in reality, you're way late, and the game perceived my extreme lateness as a check swing.

Worth a shot if you don't already have your components on game mode (if applicable).

I don't know if it bothers anyone else, but I find the PS3 controller absolutely horrible for Zone Plus Analog hitting. I love this hitting scheme, but my thumb is always slipping off the analog stick (no grip), and the position of the left stick is uncomfortable as hell. I'm thinking about buying a 360 style controller.

Also, I would use the Zone scheme as an alternative, if it wasn't for one problem: the PCI never moves! I must be pressing the swing button a milisecond before moving the left stick and the PCI just stays right in the middle. Absolutely drives me crazy. Any tips for solving this?

Yeah, i keep waiting for SCEA to remove that restriction....the PCI should continue to be fluid throughout the swing, not locked in once you press the button. I have this happen to me all the time where I start my swing slightly before finalizing PCI movement and end up swinging in the middle of the strike zone. Very frustrating.

Also agree on the thumbstick positioning. The ergonomic layout of the ps3 controller pretty much means when i'm wanting to pull the stick straight down to hit a low middle pitch, I end up pushing low and to the right and either foul it off or dribble it up the 3rd baseline .

So what I have gathered from my atrocious start to my franchise, specifically my poor hitting, is that PCI placement is VERY important. I just cannot figure out for the life of me how to implement the PCI. Ive tried preplacing the PCI; Ive tried moving it after the pitch, nothing works. When trying to wait after the pitch is thrown, I have ZERO time for pitch recognition/location. When I preplace it, I NEVER get a pitch in that location! lol I'm at a loss! What is everyone else's experience with the PCI??? I'm using Zone + Analog btw.

Lower Pitch Speed and you will have more time to react to the pitch. Also realize there are 4 control schemes available for batting, and you are using the most difficult one there is. It's definitely going to take some time getting used to. I jumped right into franchise like you did, and it took me a good 15 games before I got a game with more than 4 hits.

Your stride doesn't affect things as much as you think (done on purpose because the mode is hard enough already). Just stride super early and focus on getting the zone part down. Keep your eyes on the pitcher's hand, not the strike zone/home plate. Just look at the hand, and you will be able to discern a direction a lot quicker.

If your on an HD tv make sure you turn on 'Game Mode' or the equivalent for your TV. Otherwise you have up to 100ms lag when you press a button. Basically the baseball is already beyond your batter before the PS3 registers your button press since the video is lagging way behind. What you see is NOT what your really getting.

In a nutshell, the PS3 is way ahead of the video being displayed on your TV. This is especially bad on larger TVs (50 inches and up).

Game mode as in the picture mode option? Like switching from vivid to standard or game?

Good question. I have a Samsung 56" DLP HDTV and it doesn't have a game mode, so I figured I wasn't being affected by lag. I do have the choice of selecting "dynamic", "movie", or "standard" picture type. Like I stated, I didn't think that was affecting anything. In my mind, the different options only affect the color display/settings.

For any HDTV that has a specific "Game" picture mode, this is the optimum choice (from a gameplay perspective, definitely not picture quality). It removes additional layers of video processing that can potentially delay the picture....crucial in a timing-based game.

Well, I don't have a "game" option, so I'll try to go back to "standard".

On my Samsung the Game Mode is under System -> General. Game Mode applies to the specific input you have selected. For example HDMI 1 may have game mode on while HDMI 2 may always have it off.
