Well...why didn't you save that someplace until you could start a thread? i can't imagine you have to have that many posts.

As to the content of your post, I have no comment really because I dont like adjusting rosters like that. Just not my style. Interesting idea tho.

My problem is that I get excited about players that I want to trade for or sign in the off-season and start to sim a ton of games.
      Madden 25 - Steelers
Year 1 - 10-6 Lost in WC Round
Year 2 - 14-2 Lost in AFC Championship
      Year 3 - 11-5

All I know is it said I had to wait a certain amount of time and posts before I could make my own thread...and well, I was hoping to find some responses to this in the fairly near future when I created the post with the intent that I would be restarting my franchise if someone were to come up with some ideas that were better than my original attempt. no point in continuing a franchise I'm going to start over.

I'm not a big fan of adjusting rosters either, but I kinda view it as a fantasy draft type situation and I find it fun to play with new players more than old players (also a much bigger fan of pitching/defense than batting. always impresses me more on the great defensive plays than the homeruns...though the 15-20+ pitch at-bats that end in a homerun still hold a special place in my heart). I tried to make a regular franchise and just trade for a player, but I couldn't even get the orioles to trade Machado for anything...due to salary cap issues mainly. so barring forcing trades...which is essentially the same thing as just altering rosters pre-franchise, not sure how to do it.

on another note....a few years ago I used to actually play the entire seasons. all 162 games for the majors plus playoffs/world series. nowadays I don't think I have the time to invest to do that so I may use some of the people's ideas in here about playing a limited amount and siming the rest to get the franchise going on my normal franchise mode.

So you're abandoning all commitments to realism? Not a trenchant critique of your aims, since it's your game, but I want to make sure I understand the idea.

If you do want to maintain some realism, perhaps you could decide to implement this model over the course of two seasons, releasing vets and adding younger talent through a couple of realistic trades, free agency, and the draft.

You can move Billingsley realistically, as well as Eithier, for younger pieces, and you could eventually release guys like Uribe and Hairston.

One potential way of governing this process is to set a goal of nobody under 30 for year one, 27 for year two, and then attempt to field as young a roster as possible in year three with the aim of building within for the future.

If you did that, you could trade Kemp and Gonzalez away for young talent in year three without being crazy unrealistic, I think, and release a couple of extra older players.

You can do this easily by playing your franchise as follows: play one, sim 4-5 up until the All Star break. Then, determine if you're in the race or out. If you're in by a large margin, sim until it gets close, or until you win outright. If it gets close, hop in and play lots of games to put the onus on yourself.

If you fall out of contention by the ASB, then move solid vets for young pieces using the spreadsheet. That's a realistic way to go.

Simming a fair number of games is still fun, at least to me, because you have lots of managerial stuff to attend to, like managing lineups and rotations all the way through the organization, plus handling injuries, waiver wires, etc.

Just a .02. I'm trying to rebuild the A's roster for a little more contact and speed than power, and I'm taking a 2-3 year approach that identifies 4-5 core position players and 3-4 core starters while dangling the rest for trade or simply releasing players. Seems more realistic that way.

But of course, if that way is too long for you, then that's cool. Gotta do things in whatever way helps you enjoy the game best.

That is exactly my problem. I will Sim a lot because I want to get to the all star break and the trade deadline to do some deals and then I am excited about the off season and what might happen. I always tell myself I will play more games the next season and I usually don't lol.

I have two franchises. one is the regular dodger roster, the other is my for fun, fantasy style roster.

in my regular dodger roster I stick to the rules and do things like normal. I also don't trade away my players at least for the first year in that franchise because I like to play the team as it could be played from real life (so I still use people who were hurt like Bills/beckett, but I won't trade them away for players I'd rather have.) I do this with every baseball game I get, but this gets lackluster after so many years of playing the same thing. I had to take off a few years from baseball games because I didn't want to keep this up because it was losing its fun.

the fantasy roster, which is meant to be for fun and an experiment, is the one I was posting about. this one I don't care so much for realism, as it is for fun and using a fake team (I even considered making a current year version of the 2008 Rays team just for fun...which yes would "ruin" realism, but imagine if the Rays actually stayed together! Longoria, Pena, Crawford, upton, zobrist, baldelli, shields, Garza, kazmir, price etc....

Anyone have ideas for the fantasy team? I know the team I put together were a lot of high rated players but I'm sure there are interesting less rated players.

I think you could go conceptual and build for your ballpark. I always like the speed/defense/contact build. You could make a club like that (esp. for Dodgers Stadium) that would include guys with C POT and 70s OVR, as well as lots of guys in the B/80 range. That would provide a fun challenge with a strong fantasy element of picking just the right players without looking ridiculous.

You could also do the converse and build a slow/slugging/not really concerned about fielding team and see how far bats alone will carry you.

For the rotation, you could try to build around raw velocity arms, or build around a core of junkball guys.

Just some ideas to throw against the wall. If one sticks, I'd love to see what you come up with.

if you have some player names to try out for a pitching/fielding/contact oriented team, I'd like to hear them. I'm using the currently released roster from today. I don't know enough about the young players these days, which is why my original attempt had all high rated big names since I didn't know where else to look. they can be any OVR rating as long as their core skills are well rated. Example: Paco Rodriguez is only a 70, but he's got good k/9 and h/9, so he can still pitch well.

Just wondering this, but do you guys ever play franchise's with other teams in your favorite team's division? I'm a die hard reds fan, but the pirates are so tempting to use.

second attempt at a roster. this time around I made it a fantasy draft so all teams were shook up first. made it so if I drafted a young guy(only picked the first couple rounds then simmed the rest), I used him, unless he had to be traded to get back a dodger for his position. I also tried to keep the ratings fairly equivalent with some exceptions

                        CF - Trout
                        RF - Puig
                        LF - Heyward

                        1b - Rizzo
                        2b - kipnis
                        3b - machado
                        ss - profar/Gordon
                        c - grandal

                        bench - Federowicz, Eaton, profar/Gordon
                        Rotation:
                        Kershaw (traded Sale for him)
                        Strasburg
                        Harvey
                        Miller
                        Ryu

                        Relief:
                        Tillman - backup SP
                        Bundy - backup SP
                        Feliz
                        Smily
                        Storen
                        neftali Feliz

(I usually play all 162) anyway 3 games in I am 2-1 and the cpu is 9-6 for an overall of 11-7 Minnesota twins rec. Interesting the cpu has the same winning pct as me so far.

                              2/3 ≠ 9/15

                              66.67% ≠ 60%
