Well, it has not been a smooth start to MLB 13 for me. I installed the game data no prob, the game loaded up and then froze at the menu.
So, I reset, restart, and try again. Notice that the disc seems to be working pretty hard (despite the 10gb install) and the menu music is skipping.
I load up a game (Sox vs Indians at Fenway) and am impressed with how crisp everything looks (I agree with earlier impressions that the game seems sharper, better lighted, etc), but a couple of outs into the top of the 1st I realize that I'm only hearing Matt on commentary. I check my audio settings to be sure and chalk it up to not much to be said (though early in games in often when these guys are most "chatty"). Meanwhile, my PS3 still seems to be working harder than normal and I'm getting occasional hiccups during pitches, etc.
From there, it was all downhill. In between innings music skips like a scratched CD, everything but ambient sound (crowd, effects) cuts off in the bottom half, and when I go to quit to the main menu, the game locks up the PS3 again.
I know this is not so much an actual game impression, but I noticed others had some similar issues with menu music skipping, some in-game skipping, and the PS3 working hard, so I figured I'd share. I've deleted the game data and am reinstalling now. I hope that's all it was (a bad install) and not my PS3 crapping out.
