But there is a huge difference in that this is a pro-sport oriented title, so consumers somehow expect something new gets released every year. And that's a major reason why the game *appears* to be shipped with so-called game breaking bugs.
Unfortunately I don't foresee things changing in future though (unless consumers stop demanding new iteration every year). With games becoming more complex (more stuff to code in) while being given the same amount of (short) time to test things thoroughly, this is something we end up dealing with. (I'm a proponent of longer release cycle, even for sport title... though I don't know business aspect adds up)
... and as a consumer you do have a choice of not being one on the bleeding edge. Some people are okay with dealing with a little nuisance of playing while the game is patched, filing bug reports, etc. But that's not for everyone of course.
And a lot people avoid the first iteration of new product for exactly that reason, be it games, software, hardware, etc... If you are one of those people, then you should hold off on purchasing until the post-release fiasco subsides. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.... in fact, that's a wiser option.
