Re: 2013 The Show Official Trade Discussion Thread
Hello,
I have my Yanks franchise going on and I would be interested in trading Cano. I want to pick up some prospects. I do need some to take on Cano's role somewhat. Which team can take on the salary and also provide an A rated SS and possibly an A or high B pitcher...
Thank you in advanceComment

Re: 2013 The Show Official Trade Discussion Thread
In my 3rd year of my franchise. Just got this offer from the nats. Royals give up 1B Billy Butler (29 A) and Josh Bell (22 A, 67 OVR, Originally from the Pirates organization i believe). Nats Give up SP Jordan Zimmerman, RP Nate Jones, and SS Ian Desmond. Would you say this is a fair trade? Nats are giving up 3 major league players to my one. So im not sure. I could also take out Ian Desmond since Alcides Escobar is the better SS.
Desmond moves to SS and Escobar to LFComment

Re: 2013 The Show Official Trade Discussion Thread
I take great issue. I know, positional adjustment, yeah, yeah. But, a lot of strikeouts, not a lot of walks, a stupid ISO jump, and a career defensive year isn't awe inspiring for sustainability. Also, this LOL-worthy jump;
2010 HR/FB: 7.7
2011 HR/FB: 6.0
2012 HR/FB: 18.2
Not screaming sustainable.

And I wouldn't yadda yadda away the positional adjustment there...for a SS over a DH this is MASSIVE. I think 2013 will be a very interersting year in seeing what the "real" Ian Desmond line will look like however.
This is before considering that Jordan Zimmermann (a top 25 pitcher in the NL imo) was also acquired in that deal.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Maybe so, but Desmond is entering his prime...it's a bit hard to extrapolate his first two years (pre-prime) to the rest of his career. He may ultimately settle down around 12-15% HR/FB, which is still very good for a SS.

If Desmond regresses (which, with his peripherals, is possible), then I don't think the adjustment will save him.
I agree the deal was unfair, I just took issue with you saying that Billy Butler is about equal to a player I view as the J.P. Arencibia of shortstops."Twelve at-bats is a pretty decent sample size." - Eric ByrnesComment

Well if we're gonna extrapolate any of these years, why not choose the stabler 6-7, which has happened twice, over the one year aberration?

As for the HR/FB, it's hard to say. Expanding it to include his 2009 and 2013 we get:
2009 -- 17.4% (89 PA)
2010 -- 7.7% (574 PA)
2011 -- 6.0% (639 PA)
2012 -- 18.2% (547 PA)
2013 -- 14.3% (24 PA)
So, we have 660 PA that say it's in the 14-18% range and we have 1186 PA that say it's between 6-8%. Not really a huge statistical advantage in 1186 PA over 660 PA (less than 2:1). Both samples are probably too small to draw sweeping conclusions (since the data is so jumpy). Since he's maturing and ostensibly getting better with more experience, I'd say the true value will end up trending toward the 18% number, even if it only gets to 12-13%.
But I can agree to agree with you that getting Desmond and Zimmermann for Butler would be a win.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment
