Draft anomaly or the new normal?

I just ran a my first draft as the Cubs (simming ahead to try it out) and I noticed the draft now went 7 rounds. Every one of the seven players I drafted ended up with an A potential when I signed him. Some were down in the 40s overall with long ETAs though. I'm wondering if potential no longer matters as much as it used to. Either that, or I just had an amazing draft that I'll never recreate? I'm wondering if there are more A guys now but many never reach star status because they start too low.

Did you fully scout them all?

Yes. I also went back and checked after they signed.

I bet 3 fully pan out, 2 do well in the majors and 2 don't make it.

I'm just guessing though. You might have the best draft ever.

Did anyone else experience anything like this?

I've been simming seasons and doing the majority of the off-season stuff. That being said I don't typically do the scouting beyond the top 50 prospects (that are already fully scouted). Typically, I can get one of those guys in every round. This results in 7 players drafted w/ A potential. Every year.

For what it's worth, I haven't followed their development closely beyond that..

I've been experiencing the same thing. I don't particularly like how easy it is to get a future star even with a late round pick. And I noticed in my draft that the teams just picked in order of overall.

There's some deception that's been added in this year to simulate boom/bust type prospects. There's a good chance most of those A's are not really A's at all...

I simmed to the draft with the Phillies and was able to pick 3 top 50 guys with my first 3 picks and all had 'A' potential and the highest one was ranked 45 and he had 96 potential with the 12th pick in each round.

I'm new to the series and didn't really know how to take it but everyone was better then my guys in every round.

Re: Draft anomaly or the new normal?

Considering how many seasons it takes to get some (any) of your prospects into the prime of their respected career(s) I don't see a reason to think anything of the potential playing a role in your enjoyment Franchise Mode.

If you make it 10-12 seasons into it you will obviously(?) be simming quite a bit. In which case, you will be taking the human factor out of each player's progression. With that said, who knows what will happen during those simulated seasons.

In Madden it is easy to play through 10+ Seasons (if you enjoy the mode that much) and have a total influence on almost every player's career. Baseball doesn't really open itself to that much human/player influence.

Does that make any sense? I think the potential rating should be dynamic and follow how a player is performing from year to year rather than anything concrete.

See Travis Lee vs. Josh Hamilton.

You won't need 10 years to turn a team around if you are drafting multiple A's even if a percentages are bust. Still early but might need some house rules here.

So when you pick the "A" potential guy in round one do you send him right to AAA?

If no one else gets to it before me, I'm hoping this weekend I can run some sims to see how these "A" potential draftees progress. I'm getting the feeling that they're not guaranteed all-stars.

id be interested in seeing how many of these a-potentials turn out to be solid players. russel from scea posted in another thread that there will be plenty of busts.

Me too. I even tried picking the guys with a nearer ETA assuming they would be better but I was wrong. My first round pick had 'A' potential and an ETA of 2015 but was a 45 overall. I believe everyone else in the round was a 50+
