Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
I think it does too. Something in the logic of beginner mode is spilling over and causing just first pitches, rather than whole ABs to be pitches down the middle.
The fact that beginner mode itself evolves to become harder as the player adapts makes me think when it gets to Rookie, Vet, All Star, etc. it doesnt "turn off" completely.
It may be a reach, but makes sense.Comment

I think so too. I think the AI defaults to Begineer mode for its pitch selection after any "clean slate". (New Inninng, RTTS after fast forward, new pitcher) Stepping out seems to open the pitch selection.
I further believe this because yesterday after I crushed the first pitch of the inning off Gio Gonzalez he didn't seem to throw as many first pitch, first inninng strikes. He progressed to throw his number two pitch in those first pitch, first inning pitches.*
I think the issue is more prevalent then some perceive because of:
A Natural VarienceB Sliders SettingC Pitcher AbilityD Difficulty Setting (Magnified on RTTS if it is as I Read earlier AA= 1 Below selected difficulty , AAA= Selected Difficulty MLB= 1 Above Selected)
Also, the bug report is open BUT after they said it would be sent to AI guys, they AGAIN said it was a duplicate...still says "In Progress" though.PSN: Lynx2069

Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
it has to be a bug, if calling timeout drastically changes the pitchers approach. I have had this issue for my RTTS for almost every at bat, which kind of ruined the game for me since I like to get deep into the count in my at bats. was hoping it changed once I made the MLB, but nope, CC, Lee, King Felix, Halladay all servin up sweet meatballs to me on pitch one.
I saw this thread but never clicked on it, just thinking 'oh a bunch of other people are noticing the same thing'...thankfully I came in here and read that workaround.
Tried it last night, and lo and behold first pitch is a slider outside for ball 1. The entire at bat was then unpredictable and fantastic, ended up with a 3-2 count for the first time I think this year. I didnt get a chance to have too many at bats though, I'll try it out some more tonight. A little annoying to have to remember to call time before every at bat in RTTS, but no less annoying than those damn swooshing camera transitions. I really hope this bug can get isolated and fixed. really cripples patient hitters when you have fastballs grooved down the middle of the plate..Comment

Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
I don't have this problem. 40% of my first pitches are balls.Comment

Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
Absolute problem IMO. I'm using All-Star pitching right now and see first pitch meatballs almost everytime. I don't even swing anymore in the spirit of fairness. I've played 8-10 games in exhibition mode so far is all. Maybe too small a sample size to judge fairly. I dunno.Comment

Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
Played more games. I don't get meatballs all the time, but there does seem to be too many first pitch strikes. I have had some on the corners though. Maybe because I have swung on first pitches? Also notice the first pitch strikes when a reliever is brought in too. But, for instance I got a high and inside slider on one occasion I can recall. Then I started doing the time out thing after the CPU chose a pitch and started getting more pitches out of the zone except one which was down the pipe (as it could be of course if there was no bug). So now, I don't know. Bad thing is even though I have gotten borderline strikes I am always working from behind on the first batter and when a reliever first comes in if I don't get a hit. I have not gotten meatballs all the time at all and even when I have gotten some of those i did not always get a hit, but i guess that depends on a lot of factors including my skillz. I have not gotten many balls and when I have they have always been borderline so umpire variability probably played a factor there.
Hope this gets addressed. I am starting to see the problem. Don't like to do things in games like remember to call time on 1st batter of every inning or when new reliever comes in.Comment

Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
So calling time before each batter fixes this? Sorry, I ain't got the time to read thru all these replies. If it does seem to fix it, then it's an obvious glitch that can hopefully be patched.Comment

Re: first pitch meatballs....bug?
Also, has anyone dug up the REAL MLB stats on first pitch strikes? It's probably fairly high I'm guessing. Pitchers do not like to start in the hole.Comment
