Re: The fielding in this game has frustrated me to no end

I have thought for a while now that user control has been sacrificed to an extent to create more "fabricated" situations and animations.

The 09 game not nearly advanced as what we're playing now but I'd dare say it is less frustrating and therefore more fun to play, even 4 yrs later.

More organic and less "under-the-hood-ok-it's-time-for-a-wacky-play" feel. Just my .02. No proof, not claiming any.

If anything...they've opened up the fielding controls over the years.

the thing that kills me is grounders to the corner infielders that the fielders cant get to. they will roll under the glove. but if you dive, you dive past the ball. it's balls hit basically 2 feet away from my fielders that can't be caught. very frustrating

i started playing the show again inspired from the real life postseason and the fielding really gets more frustrating for me with every game. im so sick and tired of seeing first and third basemen ducking away from balls.

The worst one I have seen fielding was a ground ball hit right to the first baseman. He picks it up and proceeds to run to first base for the unassisted put out. Well he steps right over the bag and runs a few steps past it and then turns around and stares at first base as the runner is running by.

Did you press the O button or move him with the L stick?

Re: The fielding in this game has frustrated me to no end

I use auto fielding but here is what frustrates me about the fielding:

I set the defensive alignments for each opposing batter and put it on manual, but this still happens. Defensive alignment does not go back to default or normal--middle infielders stay at double play depth or holding no runner on 2nd, holding no runner on 1st, etc. This happens a lot and then Miguel Cabrera hits a 1st pitch down the third base line which my 3B could have easily gotten if he wasn't playing 3B Cover Drag?!

The ball hits them in the chest or something. Despite still having plenty of time to get the force out, they pick up the ball and just watch the runner go...

I bring my infield in and get a hard grounder to 2B. He picks up the ball and throws it to 1st for the out although the runner on 3rd hadn't made it 1/3rd of the way up the line. What was the point of bringing my infield in then? Has anyone ever seen this besides me?

No, and it was on auto fielding and auto throwing. I've finally switched to manual throwing a while back after seeing too many boneheaded throwing mistakes like what rjackson is talking about. The one that broke the camels back was a ball hit into triples alley at ATT Park. The outfielder had thrown the ball to the cutoff man as the runner was sliding into third, then the runner gets up and starts running for home and the cutoff guy just stands there and stares at him as he scores for an inside the park homerun...He could have easily thrown him out. After switching to manual throwing defense is much much better.

I hate that they dont even attempt to get the guy if they messed just slightly. It doesnt matter who the runner is either. I could see not wasting a throw if a fast runner is blazing down the line, but there's no throw even when Yadi Molina is jogging to first.

Not to mention the easy 3-6-3 DPs that dont get turned because the 1st baseman doesnt move one step back to 1st after making a throw to 2nd.

Playing a bunch games with Cabrera at third, he doesn't get to anything. There are plenty of ballls he should get catch but I get caught in an awkward animation and it gets past him.

A few days ago with Peralta at third, I was sucked into that diving animation where the ball hops up, and he actually caught the ball. I've played about 100 games with this game and never seen it caught. I was surprised. Defensive ratings at the corners are really big in this game.

I have one better than that. Bunt up the first base side that Adrian Gonzalez gets and looks to first base as the runner is going up the line. Runner is halfway up first base line when Gonzalez is looking to first and he is at the line! Why look to first when he could easily tag out the runner coming towards him? The runner goes past Gonzalez who, still looking to first base, flips late to first, runner is safe. Not once, but I've seen that same play a few times in half a season.

I don't see too much weird stuff going on but you gotta give the developers a break. This game is coded for a 7 year old console. I think they do a great job replicating the game of baseball. Just be thankful you don't have to play the alternative on the Box.

Oh, I have videos of bonehead plays like that one. I use auto fielding. The thing is, I am not seeing those plays for the CPU. In other words, CPU is fielding better for its players than for User with auto fielding.

I don't think console limitations have anything to do with this.
