Compared to real life, how much time do you have to react to a pitch?

Let's say ur facing a pitcher on the game throwing a 95 mph fastball. How much time do you have to react? I know in real life it's like .3secs or some crazy number like that.

That would depend on the pitch speed and difficulty. Interesting thought though.

It's not exactly what you are asking, but I tried to measure this by counting the video frames:

So you use the "factor" to see how fast the pitch is traveling visually on screen. With the Pitch Speed slider at default, a 95 mph fastball in game would feel like hitting against a 89 mph fastball in real life.

        Too much evidently.

I say that because even with the pitch speed on 10 the game swears I'm "early" on a lot of FASTBALLS despite the UI looking like the ball is just in front of the plate.

When I feel like I'm late - a lot of times the game says I'm "Just Early" or Good timing. Only times I get "Late" is when I do an emergency hack to try to stay alive.

And sometimes...I swear the game manipulates the speed of the pitch. Pitcher can throw one 92 MPH fastball and I'm "Early" but the next one shoots by me, but still says 92 on the gun. I seem to always have this issue with baseball games. Even in MVP I had to crank the pitch speed up although swings took longer in MVP it seems.

I feel like when i play against Dickey the reliever that comes in throws FIRE... but only like 90mph... like the game adjusts pitch speed relative to the starter.

          know what i mean?

There are other factors as well that you need to account for. One of those is the difference between seeing the ball in three dimensional space vs. a two dimensional TV screen. It is reasonable to believe our brains can distinguish where the ball is in real life faster than we can see where it is on the screen (simulated depth perception).

I've faced 90+ fastballs in real life as well as going to batting cages where the pitches are thrown in the high 80's / low 90's. If there is a difference, it isn't a significant one in my opinion.

              I doubt it.

Pitch speed 5 is slow. I prefer 7 or 8. I think online is at like 4, because it is even easier. A pitcher throwing 102 mph is only like a 92-93 mph fastball.

I saw an episode of sport science where they tested "if you blink, you'll miss it" and it was something like anything over 95MPH can leave the pitchers hand and hit the mitt in the time you blink.

I do think that it's all due to it being a video game. I have trouble swinging sometimes at a bouncing ball because I cannot determine the drop on TV where in real life you can see it diving down. There are no pros swinging at bouncers (unless they are on the Marlins)

                  I'm on pitch speed 10.

Two pitchers throwing about the same speed come in (I always hit select on a new pitcher coming in to see his velocity).

So they both have the same sort of stuff - low 90s with upper 70s offspeed.

Low 90s on the first pitcher I'm early. Low 90s on the next pitcher - it looks like 95-96. Then he throws another FB that looks like it's 88. All the pitches are 92 on the gun.

                  Why is that happening?

Some of that is optical illusion (we are only seeing 2D projected image of what really is 3D information), so how the pitch comes in at an angle really makes you feel the pitch travels faster or slower.... which is one reason why I like offset camera, since that way pitch tends to travel more distance over the 2D screen, making it easier for me to judge their speed.

There also are psychological elements... it's just what good pitchers use by mixing in fast and slow pitches.

I'll have to try the offset camera. If nothing else - I might try hitting from the pitcher view like in Bases Loaded

I think the time you have to react on the game is waaay slower than in real life. When facing a 90 MPH fastball in real life, your brain doesn't have time to send the signals to your muscles to tell it to swing so it's all based off of muscle memory and reaction. On the Show, it seems to me like the equivalent of facing a 70 MPH fastball in real life.

I've heard that sound 3 times... once was Babe Ruth, the second was Josh Gibson, and the third was Bo Jackson- Buck O'Neil

I play in a Men's league and have been facing 80mph pitching all summer and even a couple guys throwing high 80's. I definitively think there is more time in the game to react.

Of course in the game it is tougher to read breaking balls and there's other factors, but I think the game is much easier to react to.

Well there's also a big difference between doing all the things necessary to swing at a pitch in real life vs. pushing X in a video game.

Edit: then again, I play on timing hitting lol
