As I have said before TT, great work with these you have done a fantastic job....I guess I am confused though, have you totally redone a spreadsheet, or are you just tweaking what he did. I guess I am confused on that part...is this something you are making then?

Arsenal...so you know how to pull stuff from Baseball Refereance?

We would welcome your help, such as presenting us with the excel spreadsheet with all the formulas, that will give us the data for all the players.

Yeah, in a way. It probably isn't the most efficient but I'll see if I can get something together this weekend. It may not be the best, but it might work. I remember having some problems with it, but I will try to work them out.

hey everyone...this thread is awesome..something i've been looking for for some time now..glad there is a discussion on this topic....i was also thinking if you all believe there would be a way we could generate a player evaluation stat, something like WAR for example, that we could ultimately use in our franchise during offseasons to help evaluate talent and so forth? maybe we could have a section in excel where we could manually input data and have it spit out a WAR number? not sure how difficult it would be but what do you all think?

I don't think it is easy to calculate WAR, because of the complexity of the stat. But we might be able to come up with something

yeah i know it would probably be difficult because of the complexity of it, but maybe we could find a calculation taking the various ratings of each player (such as contact, power, etc.) and make sort of an "overall" rating that would be simple to use for those who really enjoy franchise. could be something to look into

Yeah, I know in a lot of games the overall rating is kinda worthless, as it doesn't truly tell the whole story, yet when a game just shows a bar instead of an actual over all rating, it kinda bugs me.

WAR would be very difficult because you would need to know the performance of a "replacement level player" (the "R" in WAR), and by position too.

WAA (Wins Above Average) would be much easier, because you would just need to know the average batting (and fielding, seperately) performance by position. Take the difference in performance and apply linear weights, converting to runs, then to wins. Not as simple as it sounds.

It would be MUCH easier to just use [1] Runs Created for batters, and [2] FIP for pitchers.

after some thought, i was thinking along the same lines TT...would definitely be much easier to use those both..i was also thinking of using wOBA as well for hitters

Ha, I wish my memory was still that good! I had to repeat each step in another window so I could remember the exact process.

As far as using the Roster Tool, no, but we could use his spreadsheet - but as it is we can't use it as he set it up, which was where it pulled the info directly off Baseball Reference for us. But we can manually enter the stats in the correct cells in his spreadsheet he made (pre-Roster Tools program) and it will still calculate the ratings for us. The only hangup I have with it at this point is that I hate to use HIS spreadsheet without his permission. I'd feel a lot better about it if he'd give us the go-ahead on it.

He released it, and his roster tool, for public use. I don't think he cares whether the data is pulled from b-r.com or if you enter it manually.

What he does care about is someone taking his spreadsheet and/or tool (or formulas) and passing it off as their own.

Yeah, I guess as long as we make it known that it is still Bahnzo's spreadsheet we are using, that it's ethically okay. Man, I must be getting sensitive...I need to stop watching reruns of The Golden Girls!

The roster tools program can still be used to decifer ratings for Contact, Power, Vision and Discipline for batters and H/9, BB/9, HR/9 and K/9 for pitchers, so in a technical sense you are simply extending that use to other stats and ratings, if that can be done, that would be a huge help, is it possible to add the other ratings to the minor league part of the program?

                              I hope Im making sense...

Bahnzo's spreadsheet can be used to calculate ALL ratings, including individual pitch control and break. What it CANNOT do is pull the data from websites into the spreadsheet ... you'll have to enter all teh data manually (i.e., type it in, or copy and paste).
